About a year ago I woke up in the early hours to a minor revelation, I eventually ‘got’ the joke

That's quite good. Not in laugh out loud way, but clever. Makes you wonder whether that was supposed to be the original point of the chicken version, or whether that was just surreal.

For reason it is only this post which has prompted me to realise the double meaning of crossing to the other side, after years of also not getting this joke.
A minor epiphany, although I’m not exactly pissing myself with laughter.
