Had a random chance meeting with the lovely DOB down in Chee Dale the other day, and was moaning the lack of Blog Of Dob etc. This got my thinking about UKB, errr, legends / reprobates of times yonder, and whatever happened to them:
dobbin - two kids and in and out of climbing a bit but seems psyched now
a dense loner - had a kid, who knows it might have mellowed him horror of horrors
Jim - ???
JasperSharpe - dunno, didn't rise to my bait when I posted a full list of unrepeated Medwards routes...
slackline - spent 5 years attempting a concrete mathematical proof as to how it was ontologically essential to correctly reference google links when asking questions on UKB, succeeded, and then disappeared into his own arse in a black hole of collapsing algorithms. Also had kids??
Scouse D - ???
dave - at least two kids and fell out with UKB over moderation afaik??
Sloper - two kids, more on the way, was so disgusted with Brexit that even he's given up on the Tories so perhaps no more fire for being their mouthpiece on here
cofe - ???
Kim - ???
Huffy - became a Captains Of Crush legend, took up mixed martial arts but lost his world title to Rich Simpson of course. Maybe??
-
Fuck all those losers, what about Fingers Of A Martyr?
Not just best username ever, but starter of many a classic thread including the still extant books...
-
Sloper - two kids, more on the way, was so disgusted with Brexit that even he's given up on the Tories so perhaps no more fire for being their mouthpiece on here
Walked out after arguing with me about usage of the word pogrom. Never came back.
-
I miss Houdini.
and Bubba tbh.
-
I forgot about Houdini, FOAM, and I remembered Bubba earlier but forgot to include him....good calls guys
-
Fatboyslimfast (better name than FOAM IMO) made a brief return, but has since faded again.
cofe turns up to peddle his books occasionally.
-
Dense called it a day after Slackline called him a cunt if I remember correctly.
-
I climbed with Jim a few times 3-4 years back - still had it post bicep rip. Lots of riding nowadays iirc?
Bump into Sloper quite often at the wall - and he’s always good value for teasing my left leanings...
Had a couple of good chats with FBSF At Mad Volume when he was working in Hull. Suspect CV19 has right screwed up his work...
Lagers is still in regular contact with the day walker.
Scouse and Cofe still pop up on Dave’s social media posts often...
-
Three Nine
-
Zod's Beard? I met him once at Harmers.
-
Three Nine
No longer climbs. I miss him. Gave me his 100m rope. Hope he doesn’t start again.
-
Steadfast provisioner of cute animal photos, Magpie. Always in our hearts.
-
I got an email from Houdini about 5 years ago. He was still in Hamburg I think...
-
Unclesomebody? Saw him occasionally at the wall but not for a year or so.
GCW? is he still here? I've got a feeling he is, just doesn't post now.
aLICErOBERTSfANkLUB? Were they banned? Can't remember.
-
I used to climb a lot with Zod’s Beard when I lived in Manchester. It’s 7 years since I left and I’ve largely lost touch, but I think he still boulders occasionally.
I’ve probably not seen Jim since moving away, but even when I was still in Manchester two kids and a snapped bicep meant in wasn’t climbing so much.
Would be good to catch-up with them on the off chance they’re reading.

Im still here, I didnt post for quite some years but c-19 prompted me to join in again. just dont have a great deal to say these days.( BTW Tom still in Hull, they kept me on so will be there till after xmas!!)
All of people still active in one way or other just not on here, Bubba is one of my oldest mates and regularly chat with him. He doesnt climb and is still trucking up and down the uk.
-
Scouse D - ???
Sometimes bump into Scouse at the leisure centre where our kids do not-listening on Mondays. Mostly dresses in fluro and lycra, carries a red lightsabre.
-
Maybe if you are looking for new recruits to UKB you could all step back and take a break from being Fuds for 5 minutes.
:P
-
Andy E where did he go.
-
A lot of the old lot were complete fuds! That's why we liked most of them.
Magpie realised she never had the slightest interest in actual climbing and focused on her make-up blog.
GCW got super-focused on running I think?
-
Andy E where did he go.
Andy did his PhD (well done Andy) and is pursuing academic things I think... suspect he still dabbles :)
-
Three Nine

There was rumour about a child? Virgin birth I assume

bigtuboflard
Great handle in my opinion

Saw him at the wall regularly pre-lockdown and he seemed to be going well.
-
I see Jasper regularly.
Bump into Dense and Slackers occasionally, but not at the same time.
Scouse D enjoying the bicycle.
Alice Roberts fan club was politely asked to leave due to not being a climber. I see him about. Talking to himself.
GCW does long runs and generally living the dream.
-
GCW does long runs and generally living the dream.
Which is clearly an oxymoron.
-
Nice update lagers
I've been reminded of a couple:
Dylan - far too busy doing immaculate male grooming to go to the Depot to actually post any more.
Dan Cheetham - caused a kerfuffle when constantly baiting dedicated boulderers and sport climbers on a forum of, errr, dedicated boulderers and sport climbers didn't go down so well (!?) and got cruelly cyber-bullied off the forum.
-
Scouse D - ???
Was posting on the drawing and painting thread with some lovely Burbage watercolours in April/May this year I think.
-
Of course! I remember liking them. Reincarnated as an artist. Good stuff.
-
Whatever happened to Fiend? Curmudgeonly ever moaning readily trollable UKB rogue?
Theres someone posting under his username but its clearly too nice to be him...
:) xx

He’s at the nail bar getting his cuticles trimmed.

He’s at the nail bar getting his cuticles trimmed.
With your daughter? 😱😁
-
I'm still here lurking!
Not climbing much since a bad football injury 4 years ago but loving the road bike and slowly getting back into climbing as my 8 year old lad is super keen. Had a couple of grit pottering sessions with cofe and Dave who are both climbing well. Thanks for asking after me, it's nice to be thought of.
-
He’s at the nail bar getting his cuticles trimmed.
With your daughter? 😱😁
Not very likely as she now has brought shame on the family by getting a job in banking.

I've seen mini-slack out properly enjoying the grit - great to see
I asked Mrs Slackers what it had been like living through lockdown with Slackers - she rolled her eyes and sighed

:P
are we talking Scottish fuds, fuddy-duddies or FUDs here?
all fit just fine, just looking for clarification
-
And i don't think this is a recruiting post.
-
Scottish Fuds.
Yeah I get it’s not a recruiting post but maybe more folk would stick around or contribute more if they felt they weren’t going to get assassinated.
-
Scottish Fuds.

fair point

Really? As far as forums go, there seems to be little flaming here compared to UKC.

I don't want to use UKC as a yardstick

I dunno, n00bs like tomtom and shark seem to have fitted in quite well....

It is indeed. Great guy. Never seen anyone move as effortless but with latent power on rock.
-
Scottish Fuds.

Quite. Amount of stick I get Id have fucked off years ago if I didn’t have skin in the game.
Anyone want to buy a forum?
-
It could be worse you could have bought UKClimbing.
-
Shark - it's tough love, I think??
-
Being called a Noob here feels a bit like being asked for ID at the pub.
Strange - but oddly complimentary.
@scragrock - it’s not that bad for stick this place. Unless you’ve taken 20 years trying to climb the Oak, or paint Orcs 😛
-
I feel the main difference between ukb and ukc is that ukc is full of "keyboard warriors", who would say nothing to your face but would start a snottty thread afterwards.
More ukb'ers would double-down on an online insult... and grin whilst doing so. Brutal... but at least you know where you are. Although it does come perilously close to "banter" sometimes - the refuge of scoundrels.
-

Being a “Noob” “knob” , All sounds a bit Boys club to me. Perhaps new contributors should F**k a pigs head to be part of the gang?
As for climbing Oak?
Apologies, I don’t know what that is...Sounds like the usual old boys Peak centric banter.
As for your last reference-
It’s a shame that particular gentlemen gave up on Scagland ( like Gaz I never got the pleasure of climbing with him ) but I don’t blame him. It rains most of the time up here and the place is absolutely loupin with Cleechie Middle class English Do gooders.
It does make up for it by being the best place in the UK for developmental bouldering.

Fair point.
Sorry for hijack.

"Noob" = "newbie" = (relative newcomer to the site).
The Oak = The Austrian Oak in Malham, Yorkshire, which grand overlord Shark has been trying to redpoint, and posting his trials and tribulations with, for 15,000 years.
Yes there are in-jokes but I think there's a lot of other chat and information and banter that doesn't revolve around them??
And you Wildlings are a valuable part... GazM, richieb, Stewart, SA Chris....and I shared a lot of Scottish bouldering when I lived up there.

Thanks for the clarification Fiend :)
Yes I am aware of your Highland wanderings and the various clans up here, No mention of Dave Wheeler?
Nice analogy...with that in mind-
Who is the King in the North? :worms:
-
Scottish Fuds.
Yeah I get it’s not a recruiting post but maybe more folk would stick around or contribute more if they felt they weren’t going to get assassinated.
That just hasn't been my experience here. When I've asked for advice or information on an unfamiliar destination the replies have been clear & useful.
When my health started to go tits-up a few years ago I received more than a few very supportive PMs from folk on here I've never met personally. Maybe some of this sites good qualities aren't immediately obvious?
I don't post regularly cause of visual difficulties, nothing to do with attitudes on the site.
(Hope that doesn't sound a bit pathetic :boohoo:).
-

jamie and occasionally Hamish F too. Smellyfox seems to have wandered off to breed and look at stars tho' .And didn't we have the pleasure of McGeach for a while?
-

No child, but he did have a brief relationship with a woman.
He’s happy enough debating metaphysics now instead of climbing.
-

“Jamie“ as in Murray?
Oh I didn’t know McGeach posted on this forum, The Geach’s a good guy.
-
JamieG(ardiner?), done some great topos for Sheigra.
McGeach did for a while, but disappeared.
-
JamieG(ardiner?), done some great topos for Sheigra.
McGeach did for a while, but disappeared.
You mean Robbie, Yeah he is a good guy too. Based in Northumberland now.
Makes a pilgrimage north yearly to expand his Empire in the far north.
McGeach is still climbing, saw some pics of him sport climbing not that long ago.
-
They're brothers I think.
Yep, McGeach is still going.
-
Unfortunately the rumours are true. Robbie and I are brothers. Even worse he is my younger brother and a much stronger climber. It truly is a tragic state of affairs, that I am actively trying to remedy. (The climbing part not the brother part!)
Robbie (and Dave Carrington who lurks on here) are the main Sheigra bouldering developers. I've been a few times and added a couple easier lines, but they take the majority of the credit. We're all Manchester/Peak based so can only really go up to the north of Scotland occasionally. And recently families have grown so that makes it even trickier. Loads still left to do in the North. All along that coast are promising looking spots.

Deep joy!!!
Andy E still lurks, he texted me about my last shoes for sale post within 40 minutes of me posting it the other day! Currently living the life of Riley on Skye the lucky bugger...
-
He posted 4 days ago on here....soon to be living the Aberdream.
-
He's in Aberdeenshire, like a regular fucking Hobbit.

Rumbled!

I eagerly await the username change to andy_och_aye...

Unclesomebody and I speak fairly regularly. He's working on something big at the moment (non-climbing related) and professes not to climb much. 'Much' is subjective I suppose.
-
I was thinking about starting a new thread, entitled "Be sure you put your feet in the right place.." - if you want to avoid a big lob.
But then I found this excellent thread from Fiend. Really great, and says a lot about him.. that I'd never be prepared to say to his face ;D
I wasn't referring to Neil's new route Lexicon, or Steve's lob from it. I was reflecting on someone else's reference to growing a backbone if we didn't like what we were reading. Northern Yob, I hope you don't mind me referencing your comments in the Lexicon thread, and if you want my opinion, I don't think that what people were contributing to the discussion was too bad, though perhaps pretty ill informed.
It was good however, to see the balance shifting to more positive contributions about Neil's efforts - and the man himself.
What I do find difficult - and again, apologies to you, because the same has been said by others at different times in the past - is the suggestion that people should grow a backbone if they don't like what they are reading.
What I really like about this thread, is the inclusive spirit it expresses, and I think we should all work hard to make the forum less exclusive. It may take a little bit of backbone to do that - to try and change the culture where it needs to be changed.
A lot gets said about many people, but often only those things that support our preconceptions of things, or fit the prejudices or grievances we already hold. Making things easier to read makes them easier to consider, and may encourage a few others to join the party, or come back on board. :pissed:
-
Umm, his is about regular UKBers who have disappeared.
I did think of Bubba with the driver shortage though, he must be able to name his salary at the moment.
-
I only realised that tomtom had stopped posting the other day.
-
Has Dave posted in the wrong thread or am I going mad?
-
See my comment above.
-
Has Dave posted in the wrong thread or am I going mad?
Don't worry. You won't be alone ;D
No, I was thinking about starting a separate thread, but found Fiend's, and I thought that was such a great thread to have, which - as far as I feel - expresses a great deal of what I like about being able to take part in this forum.
I was even thinking about Sloper and Dense, Slackline I don't see enough of, Jas - spoke to recently - etc, last night, folk that have all been part of making the site a more intimate place to be. It's so valuable.
Some of the threads are just fantastic. Others less so.
Helping make the site a warmer place to be, is just something worth working hard to protect.
I'm sure it would have been the spirit behind Bubba's enterprise in setting the forum up in the first place.
I just thought this thread was great, in it's expression of folk missing but not forgotten.
:punk:
-
Good call Dave (even if it's a slightly confusing thread for it!). I did allude to this in the Lexicon epic thread, asking habrich what he was going to do about UKB being a forum with a cliquey/ bullying character for lapsed climbers and bitter folk, that request fell on deaf ears it seems.
Obviously some people move on from forums for natural, IRL reasons, other people move on because it doesn't suit them, but maybe some people will move on because they have some issue with the forum - and sometimes an issue that isn't intrinsic to the forum, and could be avoided / alleviated without reducing the character / quality of the forum. I DO think that despite some clear issues with UKB (or rather, clear issues with what people occasionally actively choose to post when they could do otherwise), it is a good and potential great forum, for a mixture of focused / informed climbing discussion, good information, good banter, and fairly intellectual off-topic discussion (if you're into that sort of thing).
Maybe it's worth considering what we can do to get more people engaged, keep people engaged, whilst keeping having fun here??
-
You want to start an instagram page? Some tantalising titbit, then -> "link in bio".
-
I know that, and he said that in his post. I meant what is he going to do as a member and semi-regular contributor. Post most positive stuff? Keep bumping up good and useful threads? Gently (i.e. not dismissing everyone as bitter) call people out when they've gone too far?? Be extra welcoming to newcomers? etc etc....
-
What was with TomTom then.. did he get the hump over something, or is it more a 'I waste half my life posting on forums and I'm now too busy so will have to have a break/go cold turkey'
His last posts seemed to be relatively normal?
Seems a shame as I think his input to the forum was valuable.
Bubba's still driving lorries, but says the shortage of drivers hasn't translated into higher wages as yet. to Quote, "agency work is offering some good rates, but still not enough to jump ship from where he is now".
-

Okay, sorry. I do remember the exchange now.

Anyone heard from Jasper of late? Talk of him disappearing with peoples money going on in the rope access world.
Not good.
-
Anyone heard from Jasper of late? Talk of him disappearing with peoples money going on in the rope access world.
Not good.
I've spoken to a few people about this. I've passed his address on to those trying to find him.
He's not dealing with divorce well.
Last time I spoke to him, he was adamant that he was about to do the work he owes people, but it sounds like this has been going on for longer than I realized - to the point where important deadlines have past.
I have to say that I am really surprised by him letting people down like this.
He didn't give me any details about what he is doing with his time. Usual things like "it will be fine, I'll sort it".
I don't think he has deliberately tried to defraud anyone and expect that he plans to return any money and work that he owes. Whether this will actually happen is another thing.
I've heard that he is sometimes in The Sports Shack in Woodseats. Not sure how up to date this is.
-
Thanks lagers… Sad times

Divorce is rarely something that anyone deals with “well”, even when it appears they are from the outside.
Personally, I got on a plane, flew 4000 miles and started a new life on another continent; rather than bump into her in Tescos.
Sad indeed. All round, I’ll bet.

I would say the karma system has merit in direct correlation to the proportion of +ve karma floating around compared to -ve karma....
To me it looks like a little nod of the head (or occasionally shake) for anyone and anyone who says something another user values (or occasionally disdains) enough. It definitely seems to be based on the interest / entertainment / incisiveness / humour etc of the posts.

I'm on -3 and deserved each one as I was being a nob. I reckon it works. It's not like UKB has some gawd-awful algorithm pushing those of high karma to the top.
-
Whist I did post on this thread whilst it was current, I'm bumping it up as re-reading it (and seeing the updates) made me wish I'd left at some point so people could wistfully reminisce about me then I worried that no one would remember me then i realised the self-centered futility of this whole excercise and was going to delete the post but thought better of it and left it...
Sorry about that :lets_do_it_wild:

Cariliois the prince of the prince lines, he was just coming into his own too, before a mysterious disappearance??

Think he felt pretty unwelcome tbh, not to speak for him like, but this is what I heard
