Title: Oink snuffs it
Post by: unclesomebody on October 23, 2007, 12:49:02 pm
Just a little warning to those who had been using Oink's Pink Palace. Just seen a story on BBC news that the website has been shut down, and the guy running it has been busted. They've accosted all his computer stuff in the UK and also the server side which was in the Netherlands. Just in case you have any torrents still running I guess it would be a good idea to stop them running now.

Well, that's the end of the best torrent site around. Such a shame in my opinion... Time to move on...

It's a fucking tragedy - nipped home and stopped my client as soon as I heard.

I just hope he manages to escape jail / crippling fines and can continue elsewhere.

I'd uploaded over 100GB to Oink  :wall:

I donated a tenner so I could see the top 10 stats and have more features. I can't see the authorities coming after 180,000 members though :S

I always thought that the pre-release stuff would spell trouble eventually. When you can get hold of demos/finished albums weeks or even months ahead of their official release date, sooner or later somebody is going to spit a dummy and it's finally happened.

It's not nice to know that us ex-oinkers are all currently under investigation by interpol, but hopefully they are just after the people who fed the pre-releases to the scene rather than average users like moi.

They are not going to go after 180,000 people. They don't have the manpower. I would guess they will target the big uploaders, so if you were in the top 5% then you might have a bit of cause to worry. I'd only uploaded about 120Gb and my brother about 200Gb so I doubt we are anywhere near the top. To give you an idea of what the real uploaders were doing... a friend of mine had access to a private admin account for a while and there was many many terabyte uploaded on that account. I think those people will have something to worry about (maybe). This kind of thing is usually all smoke and no fire.

Interesting article regarding the current state of the music industry and comment on Oink's takedown. (http://www.demonbaby.com/blog/2007/10/when-pigs-fly-death-of-oink-birth-of.html)

It also looks like http://oink.cd has been returned to it's owner - the takedown message is gone.

That's a good rant (as someone replied to the article).

Shame about OINK.  But there will be other OINKS, other avenues.  Sympathy for the record industry?  None at all.  Why?  Read this (http://www.negativland.com/albini.html).  (May have posted this before eons back, but still pertinent.)
Title: Re: Oink snuffs it
Post by: Bubba on October 29, 2007, 08:36:49 am

Yes there will be other Oinks....eventually. But the way that Oink was run ensured an extremely high standard of releases and i've never seen that anywhere else.

Oink itself may even come back - it was only a tracker, it didn't host any music itself.

I hope a suitable replacement does come along. I don't really miss the days of queuing stuff up on soulseek but it looks like that is what I will be returning to.

What is everyone else using instead?

I think so, yes, but if the authorities have been investigating it for 2 years (as they have said) then you'd think they had something concrete to prosecute him with - i've no idea what though, i guess we'll have to wait for the trial which won't be until December at the earliest.
I believe that the senior tech person on the site is still in hiding, though the owner himself has been released.

Demonoid for general stuff (but not music), and I've signed up to stmusic.org which is looking quite promising.

Other existing sites which have had good things said about them are:
libble.com (full and now invite only)
funkytorrents.com (full and now invite only)
exigomusic.org (invite only)
revolutiontt.net (invite only)
btmusic.eu (invite or donation only)
filemp3.org (open but i can't get the confirmation email)

But all the hype at the moment seems to be pointing to 2 new offerings - waffles.fm which will open in the next couple of days, and what.cd which is in beta but has a lot of music on it already (apparantly, it's down right now).

I think waffles.fm is the one to go with until oinks legal battles are sorted out.

Title: Re: Oink snuffs it

edit - got into filemp3.org now and there's a lot of stuff there.

I seriously doubt it's a honey-pot - when you use bittorrent anyone can see your IP address and exactly what you're seeding/leeching. The feds have been watching Oink for 2 years so if they were going to go after you then they'd have more than enough to go on already :)

S'pose so. Well we'll see. STMusic is open...
Title: Re: Oink snuffs it
Post by: Bubba on October 30, 2007, 10:02:13 pm
Yeah, and ST seems quite good too...but from reading the Oink's memorial forums it seems most people are going to be heading to what.cd or waffles.fm, with funkytorrents being a popular choice too.

Anyway, all of us were small fry compared to the Oink heavyweights - there were people with many TB uploaded...

I'm on stmusic / what.cd / waffles.fm and funkytorrents but i've not been there long enough to get invites. Trying to get my waffles ratio up to scratch.

When i get a load of invites i'll pass some on the the usual suspects :)

urgh, this all totally sucks.  Was bound to happen at some point though.  Would massively appreciate a waffles or what invite when someone gets one spare.  Totally missed all the registration periods...
Title: Re: Oink snuffs it
Post by: Bubba on November 15, 2007, 06:35:26 pm
If/when i get invites i'll invite all the old "wasters" people - you know who you are :)

I've already invited the person who invited me to Oink so hopefully he'll get some spares too before very long.

Was bound to happen at some point though.
I agree, it was. But now Oink is dead (maybe not forever) 3 alternatives have sprung up in it's wake. The recording industry just don't get it - they can't stop this.

Even if they start to go after users (as has been threatened this week) then everyone will just use darknets and they will have lost all control over who is sharing what. They will lose, the writing's on the wall.

The music industry has changed forever. For me it's not even about getting stuff for free any more. I'd rather donate £10 to an artist that I love rather than buy the CDs in the shops and see them getting the 50p (or whatever other measly sum) that they typically get after the industry has taken it's cut.

Nope, not a member...nor at Exigo which is another one of the "underground" sites. I'm not sure these really exclusive sites are ever going to have a big enough userbase to offer a wide range of music tbh.

I'll stick with stm/what/waffles for now - it's hard enough trying to keep a good ratio on 3 at once, let alone more.

Could always do it the old fashioned way and..........take a chance!

Could be  :devangel: but I've discovered some great music live before I'd ever heard of them, let alone heard any of their music.  If you can't get at the music and want some insight, what about reviews of previous gigs?

Besides, if it is shit, then so what?  You're presumably out with friends who will make the evening enjoyable irrespective of the quality of the music. (or you could just neck some drugs and then you won't care what the music is like)

...also wondered if it is possible to set up a private ukbouldering p2p, although I dont have the knowledge to do this, I have around 120gb of music to share.

Would this be a great idea?  The rock (music) forum I use has a G-Mail account, but it could be done better.

(It's called the "Funky fresh beats etc.." music thread (you'd think that was a reasonable description of electronica) yet the more electronica is posted the more whines are heard, why so?  Perhaps a separate share-zone?  There's not exactly enough of it going on over UKB to justify the programming work, I'd guess. Personally I don't see the point on UKB - but it might stop people moaning about techno that no-one ever asked/forced them to hear anyway.  It must be a Brit thing:  to be British is to piss & moan 24/7...)
Title: Re: Oink snuffs it
Post by: Bubba on December 17, 2007, 08:27:01 pm

We've actually already had a ukb p2p network in the past but it didn't work all that well really. Only a couple of us would share 24/7 and without everyone doing it there is little point.

Anyway the torrent trackers do it much better really.

Somewhat mixed bag, but theres tons of good shit at The Mixing Bowl (http://www.themixinbowl.org/).  May not be to your taste, and as with many others you're expected to maintain a decent ratio.  Just checked though and there aren't currently any invites available to dish out as they've hit their self-imposed limit of 50,000 members, PM me your email address if you'd like an invite though and I'll try and get you one when they prune inactive user accounts.

Title: Re: Oink snuffs it
Post by: Monolith on November 11, 2008, 07:00:38 pm
Bubba, I could cry.

I spent the last 3 hours revising encoding, transcoding, decoding, spectral displays,  constant bitrates, variable bitrates etc.
all to no avail!

what.cd have a strict vetting process for invitees. I joined the relevant IRC channel and eventually got invited to sit the interview. I fumbled the 'enter' key and by mistake added a wrong option in answer to the question "Which formats are acceptable....".

> Lossless to lossless
>Lossless to lossy
>Lossy to lossy
>Lossy to Lossless.

I accidentally submitted lossy to lossy in my answer and all bar lossy to lossless (which I know is correct) .

I wasn't asked a second or third batch of questions and got booted off to "do my studies" and am only allowed back in 48hours for a second attempt. If you fail at interview on your third, you can't possibly get an invite through the IRC means.

One error, one shot kill! Be warned candidates!

Title: Re: Oink snuffs it
Post by: Bubba on November 11, 2008, 10:16:37 pm

Wow, I didn't even know they had such an interview process! It's good in a way though as it keeps the quality of the place  high.

I was lucky to get in on what.cd when it started and I also very luckily got an invite to waffles.fm from one of it's admins on the strength of me being an old Oink power user+. I don't really contribute to the communities on the sites but have a solid ratio on both. If you get completely stuck I might be able to help you out but only as a last resort as invites are also very limited.

Talking of Oink, his trial is up in 3 days - I wish the lad luck and if he gets convicted of anything it will be a fucking travesty as he never actually did anything illegal.
