Title: Churnet Conditions...
Post by: alaan on November 06, 2008, 01:14:49 am
Anybody know what the Churnet is looking like for this weekend? Has the rock finally succumbed to the rubbish rubbish weather or will it yet offer sanctuary from all this rain? In fact, does it ever get wet? Any local's knowledge would be greatly appreciated. Ta!

was in v.g. condit last weekend.  Wrights rock is almost always dry, even during that spate of terrible weather a month or so ago most of the problems were still bone, which accounts in part for the horrendous chalkiness of the place.
Ousal is usually dry even after sustained bad weather and gentlemans does seep a bit.

both times i've been there the left 3rd of the ousal traverses have been drenched, so i wouldn't put all your eggs in the ousal basket in bad weather.

Ina's rock seems permanently dry. There was even a massive downpour last time I was at the crag and it seemed to magically stop 2m around the base of the crag. None of the climbing got wet.

The first time I went to the churnet I saw the ousal go from bone dry to drenched in a very short period of time, after days of bad weather. I guess there's always a lottery element to finding conditions in poor weather.

Has anyone been to wrights rock recently?
thinking of going on the traverse at the weekend & was wondering if it was dry at the moment.

wrights was a bit damp last sunday. There was condensation on the pebbles. Although I think there's always stuff that can be done. The base was also getting a bit greener.

Dunno really Andi, it was more checking to see how dry it was in case we got fogged off at the Roaches last weekend.  However, the thought is still there in case its damp up on the grit this saturday.  Have you been to the Churnet before?  If you haven't we'll have to sort a visit out some time, maybe next year now though, unless conditions dictate it for this weekend.

No i've never been but Wright's Rock looks amazing and the other things in that area look pretty cool too. I wish I could make it this weekend but I've got to work! Have fun at the Roaches!

Cheers Andi.  Churnet is well cool to be honest, with a variety of stuff hidden in the trees.  Let me and the other scouse contingent know if you're thinking of heading that way and we'll try to hook up.

Title: Re: Churnet Conditions...

Wright's was in good nick today as well as all the buttresses left of it. Bit green on top of a few things like the Breathe block. Duck Billed platypus roof was dry too (Cool problems if you've not already done them?). Cottage also dry all over.

Got quite humid later, then we were attacked by flies... then it pissed down so we bailed.

I was at Gentleman's Rock today and it seemed to be mostly free of condensation but overnight rain had caused a lot of run-off on the right hand side of the crag; on the rock to the right of the Gentleman John crack there was seepage on most of the upper bit (ie. you couldn't really climb High Speed Imp Act or The Nose). Apart from that though the rest of the crag was mostly dry/dryable with the stepladder.

I can't really see it improving much by tomorrow. It was in reasonable wind, but still dripping from every overhang by mid afternoon. The wind just didn't seem to be cutting through the moisture. It was noticeably warm so I guess it was condensing faster than it was drying.

Ousal/Cottage are horrible and damp and Wright's is condensed out and dripping - total write-off.

Title: Re: Churnet Conditions...
Post by: aly on February 02, 2011, 04:46:24 pm
I think it's probably the warm humid air and cold rock.  Having said that it's reasonably windy here in Derby, so if it stays dry for the next couple of days it might be fine by the weekend (Ousal was only a bit damp but Wright's was sopping).  If I'm out that way again tomorrow I'll report back.

Wright's was basically dry yesterday (friday) afternoon.  A little soapy and the routes/topouts were damp but nothing disasterous.  It rained yesterday night though so no idea what that's done to it.

Cheers. Went down there myself yesterday (sat). Finishes to many problems were dripping but still plenty to do.

Some twat has put large donkey marks on a couple of the problems up at wrights making it look worse than usual. Its lucky the crag cant be seen clearly from the path. Tried to remove what I could but didn't make much of a dent in the problem.

Would guess there will be a similar amount of stuff to do, unless temps suddenly change. Churnet often seems an odd one to predict conditions, especially crags like ousal. I've rarely been when there's nothing dry. I'd give it a go...

If there wasn't going to be any wind I'd say no chance. Bit of a breeze and drop in temps maybe. Might take a look myself, as its on the way to the Stoke wall.

We were there on Saturday in the rain.  Most of Gentleman's was dry with just some damp on the top sloper of the Nose.  Some of Wrights was dry (eg Rocket Ride and Wrights Unconquerable) although quite a few problems on the main section had damp holds.  These would have dried on Sunday and today.  That cool steep 7a arete on a bit of rock thats a pain to get to was wet but will have dried yesterday and today.  I cant remember its name!

Didnt go anywhere else.

Churnet was OK today, a few damp areas, but was suffering a lot from snow melt affecting the top holds above the lip at Gentlemen's . Didn't head up there but was told Wrights about the same.

There today 26th Jan, it was gopping  :fishing: every wall was soaking, not a dry hold in sight!! Including wrights and gentlemans. Think it will take a good day or so to dry out!!
Had a good session at Awesome walls instead, it was dry there, and they had just put up some new problems!

I was down there today. Didn't see anybody else so guess Blakey meant yesterday? anyway Wrights is pretty grim though the traverse is still ok minus the end up bit[ though there are large puddles under sections of it]. Gentlemans is fine but all the finishing holds - the nose / impact are all wet.
Cheers

Gopping, nothing in either at wrights or gentlemens, not even sections of the traverses. If it stays this calm and warm its unlikely to be much better for a couple of days.

How fast does stuff here dry? Is it worth going if it's been raining earlier in the day (but otherwise warm as it has been lately) or the day before?
Title: Re: Churnet Conditions...
Post by: Bonjoy on July 03, 2012, 03:04:00 pm
It mostly depends on wind, overnight mist and daytime humidity. It's the sort of place that will crap out with condensation in the way typically seen on steep limestone. Wrights is more open than say Gentlemans and condensation will dry quicker. Generally though rain of itself isn't a big problem, odd bits do suffer run-off but much is too steep to be affected.

Bad on Saturday. Apart from a few holds at cottage above head height everything else; wrights, ousal, gentlemens, virgin wall was gopping and 'snapable'

Also 'chemical spraying , no access permitted' signs up around Gentlemen's including on the path up to it . Not sure how long these will be up for but seems to be a lot of logging going on in that area.

We were at Ina's today, most of Thumbelina was dry but snow had blown in on to the ledge.   Also worthy of note, there was a huge (maybe 50cm deep and 1mx2m area) hole opened up right underneath most of the problem, probably due to ground collapse as the roots of the old tree have rotted or something.  Someone might put some photos up later.  Anyway we filled it all in with a mix of stones and wood then leaves over the top, the landing is fine again right now but it will gradually lower again as the wood rots.

Did anyone get out anywhere else eg Wrights or Gents, how much is dry?

Don't know about those problems but Gents was largely dry today.  However access was a problem, both usual car parks were under 6 inches+ of snow, we had to park off-piste somewhere and walk in about 45 minutes through the snow (thanks to Nan's local knowledge!)  However this snow will mostly be gone by tomorrow night I reckon.

Its been raining/snowing all around the peak for a few days before I left Derby on Friday morning.
Being softer sandstone, if you get anything done on the overhanging wrights rock; the rock may be in soft and brittle condition.

I would probably give Churnet a miss tomorrow.

Went to Wright's this morn, very dry and very sticky. When its this cold any moisture present within the rock stays deep within. No where near as much snow as the main peak venues. I would say Gents would be in good nick.

Wright's was pretty much condensed out yesterday. Gentleman's was a bit better with some problems dry. Virgin wall was fine.

Was thinking of visiting tomorrow... Haven't been before so don't know what it's like when the weather's bad... Looks like it's going to be raining and I know it's rained recently? Anyone know if it's worth it? In particular wrights rock...

I was Churnet rambling on Tuesday this week.  From memory weather had been dry all day Monday and Tuesday was okay, no morning fog.  I didn't go to any main venues so can't comment on Wrights etc. but did check out the stuff around Breathe/Grasshopper which was all a bit damp.  I did manage to find some more obscure dry venues but wouldn't put money on them being dry tomorrow.
Not sure how helpful that is.
I might be back next Tuesday so any updates from the weekend would be appreciated.

Also wet at Ina's and Rock and Gentleman's Rock... Rocket Ride at Wright's was dry... very poor driving/walking to climbing ratio today...

Anyone have any idea how Wrights might be tomorrow? It's about the only place I can think of that might be worth a shot.

There as much snow down that way as there is in Sheffield?

It does indeed and temps are supposed to stay cold tomorrow so maybe it will be ok.

No snow stuck in Derby either. Good chance of there being none in the churner.

There is snow here but not too much - local roads all in good condition - it's quite wet snow tho so prob some seepage at the crags..

Discrete and Grasshopper blocks dry first thing.. I don't think the overnight rain was too heavy.

Wright's and Gentlemans both dry today. Been caught stealing sloper dry too, which is a good measure of general seapage.
Very still and humid tho.

I’ve not climbed at all here before - a couple of dry days permitting is the rock climb able at this of year?
Older posts seem to suggest it’s often fine even when it’s been raining but I’m also aware it’s sandstone so thought I should check...?
Thanks in advance!
