Title: F-ing amazing drum'n'bass.
Post by: Fiend on November 27, 2008, 11:29:49 am
Here's 10 for starters, in the epic -> neuro -> dark stylee (all standalone tracks rather than ones that need to be in a mix). Is it any wonder I love this music??

Photek - Love and War

(Wanted to get Sketch & Code - Whatever RMX and Panacea - Chrome 13 VIP on here too, couldn't find them).

That will do for now...

Glad you like it  :) That should have been listed as Domus Et Klutus actually. The transition from those gong-like drums into the bassline is heavy as fuck.

Not my bag personally but very welcome anyway - it's a broad church. Will try to post some different flavas up at some point. In fact if someone wants to do a jump-up ten that would be cool.

Commix - Bear Music

Tactile - Changing Slowly

Peyo - You Can Make It

Phace - Reservoir
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=8298nNDmHuw (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=8298nNDmHuw)

Cyantific - Cover Story. A bit cheesy 'trance n bass', but I like it.
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=ViTZFAr5X2I (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=ViTZFAr5X2I)

And if we are having that TC tune in this thread, can it least be this version:

Venetian Snares - Szamár Madár

Not easy listening by any stretch, but definitely the tune most likely to cause me to crash my car.

Got no sound at work so I'm guessing that these are ok versions! Either way you get the idea. The Planet V album was fucking amazing and I went to the night they did at the Cue Club in Birmingham in '99 which was something else.

Ok Fiend. You seem to be the defender of the [d&b] faith. Can you recommend a good drum'n'bass evening in Sheffield? We're ideally looking for the happier, bouncier side of things. Sometime in the next few weeks.

The Tuesday Club would fit your bill I think, my mate sometimes plays it and they get some pretty big names. That's all I know for Sheffield though. Leeds is where it's at, mofo.

:agree: TTC (http://www.shef.ac.uk/union/TTC/main.html) has always been good!  Not just DnB though, 'ip-'op is popular too, as are breaks, but its always good (at least every-time I went I had a good time (https://themixingbowl.org/static/img/smilies/dancin.gif) (https://themixingbowl.org/static/img/smilies/nana.gif) (https://themixingbowl.org/static/img/smilies/crazy.gif))

The only downside is, well its on a Tuesday.

This is made up for by their (vaguely) monthly Saturday events with the Valve Sound System .  Next is 7th March, take some ear plugs its very loud (although not as loud as Leftfield).

TTC aye, next Valve should fit the bill, I might be going if I;m here then.

Also, this Friday, http://www.the-plug.com/hospitality-records-high-contrast-shy-fx-danny-byrd-transit-mafia (http://www.the-plug.com/hospitality-records-high-contrast-shy-fx-danny-byrd-transit-mafia) <<< them lot, definitely the happier bouncier side.

Drum and bass is weird. A relatively simple form - and sometimes formulaic form - of dance music. I've listened to thousands upon thousands of tracks and keep waiting to get bored by it. But no, just when there's any hint it might sound at all unexciting, I hear things like this:

http://rapidshare.com/files/203515292/Essential_Mix_-_2009-02-28_-_Blame.mp3 (http://rapidshare.com/files/203515292/Essential_Mix_-_2009-02-28_-_Blame.mp3)

A pretty good radio-friendly mix but skip to 69:00 for the general track vibe and then wait for the drop at 71:38 - 71:40, IMO simply f-ing amazing. I rewound it about 10 times in total.

This all came courtesy of the dobbinator, BTW. http://dobbinwondermule.blogspot.com/2009/03/fix-blame.html (http://dobbinwondermule.blogspot.com/2009/03/fix-blame.html)

Raiden's last track last night:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ebfZlBv9D9s (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ebfZlBv9D9s)
Epic. God knows how many years old, but still sounds fresh. Do yourself a favor and listen to the mp3 on some proper speakers though.

Break - Symmetry preview thing:

Been listening to this a lot this week.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yW7WDhwQVzI (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yW7WDhwQVzI) pretty cool actually, the main bassline is monstrous as you say, not so keen on the chopping and changing but I guess he's got to through some mellow bits in for the pendulumn fankids who can't handle a whole track of BEEF.

No idea about the release, possibly a long way off?

Thanks guys. Fiend - the version I heard on Goldies podcast is a bit more minimal than the one on YouTube and the Hype Comp.  I'll have to wait for the release I suppose.. I've a got a real bug for DnB and Jungle at the moment.

New ED RUSH and OPTICAL album coming soon!! (Although no doubt not nearly as soon as promised).

Not as big a fan as Ed Rush and Optical as many people are. I thought their early seperate output was pretty great, The Raven, To Shape The Future, anything on No U-Turn etc, but then found Wormhole quite disappointing - only "Slip Thru" really got my groove on. And recent output was okay but a bit too ploddy and discoey for me. But this forthcoming album promises to be a Wormhole for this decade, with a similar gritty feel and updated production and energy. Which, so far, sounds pretty good. It's certainly got more spark from what I've heard.

A few samples here: http://dnbforum.com/showthread.php?t=58505&page=4 (http://dnbforum.com/showthread.php?t=58505&page=4)

There's a brilliant serial killers remix of Congo Natty's old Jungle classic Code Red doing the rounds and it's ace.  You can hear it about 20 mins in on the D&B Arena Podcast featuring Original Sin on 5th May...

I've heard some tunes from the new Rufige Kru album and they're all ace.   I've not listened to any new DnB for years but there's some good stuff that's really turned my head recently.

For all the Calibre-headz- There's a new album out containing such classics as All The Days and Harbinger, it's absolutely amazing. It's called shelflife volume 2. And the new Lynx and Kemo album is out, it's called The Raw Truth and is also well worth seeking out. It's dangerousousousousous

Jaguar Skills History of DnB (http://slack.ser.man.ac.uk/files/music/jagskills_20100503-2219.mp3) for if/when the BBC link is removed.

Had a better listen to this cycling to work this morning, its ok, but its reminded me how annoying Skibadee is, and its a shame each snippet of a track is so short.

I liked some of Pendulum's early stuff, like the Vault. Their new stuff is utter shite tho... kiddy beats.
On the whole, for me, the DnB takeover was a welcome trip back to the good old days of night clubbing in Sheffield... NY Sushi especially

On DI.fm (http://DI.fm) there is a new 'Liquid DnB' channel (free). Currently playing is a mix by london elektricity - drum and bass club anthems disk one.

After a very dry period where the only DNB cds available were mundane cheese, there have been 3 interesting releases at the harder end of things:

Current Value & Donny - Revolt & Riot
http://www.juno.co.uk/products/revolt-riot/434220-01/ (http://www.juno.co.uk/products/revolt-riot/434220-01/)
Brutal stuff by two artists at the cutting edge of harder dnb. Quite varied with a good mix of dnb rollers and mashed up techy stuff.

Eye-D & DJ Hidden - Peer-2-Peer Pressure
http://www.juno.co.uk/products/peer-to-peer-pressure/435902-01/ (http://www.juno.co.uk/products/peer-to-peer-pressure/435902-01/)
A current highlight from the guys who make up the well-established gabber act The Outside Agency. Having an "outside the scene" influence works well here with hard-hitting but fresh-sounding tracks that mix trancey melodies and effects with diverse punchy beats. Recommended.

Dom & Roland - The Big Bang
http://www.juno.co.uk/products/the-big-bang/435290-01/ (http://www.juno.co.uk/products/the-big-bang/435290-01/)
Another totally consistent CD from the duo who steadfastly refuse to sell out. Perhaps a bit too consistent as it lacks the variety of Through The Looking Glass, but still makes up for it in quality techstep sounds.

Hospital Records might be mostly dire student/stadium cheese'n'vocal pop-peddlers these days but they haven't managed to fuck up S.P.Y.'s excellent musical output with this one. A good mixture of light and dark and deep and funky, and an insta-buy for anyone who has heard his stuff before. So stick with bigging up dnb you think others would like rather than slagging off sub-sub-sub-sub-genres of it that you don't like.  The title is after all "F-ing amazing drum'n'bass" and not "Don't bother listening to this stuff I think is shite, listen to this instead"

No offence but that is as irredeemably awful as most of DB's recent output. His "dnb" tends to make happy hardcore look like a deep and well crafted musical artform.

Other recent things to avoid like the plague:
Rudimental - Home
Wilkinson - Lazers Not Included
Johnny L - In A Jungle
Chase & Status - Brand New Machine
Camo & Krooked - Zeitgeist

....all of which are truly abysmal pop'n'cheese at it's worst.

If one really wants radio-friendly lightweight DnB, then it's much more worth considering:
Klute - The Draft
Blu Mar Ten - Famous Lost Words
....both of which are very mellow and musical but actually done well and are proper dnb.

Or for something more upbeat in the stadium DnB style:
Andy C - Nightlife 6
Various - Way Of The Samurai 2
....both of which are reasonably ravey but decent overall - NL6 being good value and WOTS2 being quite proper.

Thankfully there is no reason at all to wallow in any cheese, as there have been quite a few good releases recently:
Various - Drum And Bass On Demand 2
Various - Transit 2
Various - Dreamthief 4
Jubei - To Have And Have Not
Various - Don't Fear The Black Planet

....all of which are fairly chilled out, listenable, deep and well put together. No headbanging stuff just good beats and atmosphere.

His essential mix for me was awesome, and reminds me of times gone by where it helped me through difficult periods. Bouncy and flowing, maybe cheesy, but on the whole great.

I've heard Nightlife 6 is mint, not sampled yet.

No no that sounded fine the first time  :P

If you like the mellower / happier stuff try
S.P.Y. - What The Future Holds
Ill Skillz - Nectar And Ambrosia
Bachelors Of Science - Science Fiction
Blade - Moments The Change Us
Various ‎– Sun And Bass Selection 2011

....all really good in that genre.

Also the 2 hour Blame Essential Mix from a couple of years ago is good.

(Actually this one has a few darker stompers on it, might want to cherrypick the Klute, Marky and Nymfo tracks)

Nymfo - Suddenly VIP (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d_kDjLTKcQo#)

Klute - Comfort Zone (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FbsrXD_yJeg#ws)

(Some nice smooth bits and good rollers on this. And a absolutely rinsing Dom and Roland track if you must)

Nymfo & Chris.Su - Repression (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=um8v5NApfcU#)

One of the best podcasts I've heard for a while, and Rinse do set the standard high on their DnB shows anyway. This one has 40 mins of uplifting rollers from Clive Ingredients (the first track is rolling funk at it's best), 40 mins of deep deadly dubby tribal ruffness from Digital (serious heat around the 54+ mins mark), and 40 mins of old skool from Tom Redeye Records.

I think the saying goes "You can please some of the people some of the time, but you can't please all the people all of the time".

What you think is "awesome beats" someone else might not like.

From excellent old jungle to excellent future jungle:

https://www.xlr8r.com/podcasts/2018/03/podcast-532-homemade-weapons/

Serious cutting edge beats here.

It's ace how jungle / dnb has been around for what, 25 years nearly? And people can still come up with sounds and sub-styles that sound fresh and creative whilst still being true to the energy and depth and lack of compromise that makes the music special.

Thank you. About to listen.

Other things are never as good as the first time but with drum and bass a new banger is as good as it was twenty five year ago when I first realized the genre existed. It pissed on most of what I listened to at 15 - sixties, happy hardcore - and still does.

Thanks again. Lack the time to be as informed as I was then so this is brilliant.

  :great:

Ulterior motive stuff on here is great - ‘the ripper’ from the same EP particularly.

If I'm allowed to self-promote a little bit, on August 2nd I'm doing the second Anomalies night. Bringing down four core members of WYJC to the Cafe Totem basement. Golden Era breaks, freestyle drumfunk and a 2hr b2b of heavyweight techstep - plus myself opening up the room. All wax.

With those styles I'd say it's obligatory to self-promote :)

The resurgence of modern jungle has been great recently. Jem One and Homemade Weapons also favs of mine.

Motown, I agree entirely, DnB is STILL sounding exciting after all these years, so much good production and so many good varied styles. I listened to a little bit of happy hardcore in my late teens but always preferred gabber and then DnB a lot more.

Leafing through the New Yorker (the first print edition of my new subscription) I noticed a short piece about Kemistry & Storm’s DJ Kicks mix. Apparently this was never reissued when the CD sold out, but it’s now on Apple Music / Spotify as well as vinyl - some banging late 90s tunes.

I have a hazy memory of drunkenly riding a Kong Explosif (wIth a mate on a Chopper) into central London, spending most of the night at Movement / Bar Rumba with K&S and Grooverider, and then somehow cycling back on bikes that miraculously had not been stolen...

Bukem just delivered a guest mix on Mary Anne Hobb's show on 6music. Smooth liquid rollers as you'd expect. Quality tunes delivered by a connoisseur of the scene. Listen again on BBC Sounds App if it appeals.

That Bukem mix included the brilliant Flume track - The Difference - , which I think would provide a potent pre-ascent anabolic-syke advantage to a certain knee-protection-connoisseur...

Sure was. I think my favourite era of D'n'B is still 1996-2000 early techstep. Stuff like No U-Turn and early Hardware through to Dom & Roland and BC....I love how some of the tracks had massive depth and darkness and atmosphere and aggression without being an OTT cacaphony. Shadow Boxing is a prime example, dark but catchy as fuck and still creative to this day.

Edit 1: If I ever learnt to mix, I've already got this track list mapped out to represent that flavour....

Renegade - Terrorist (mixes well into PF? intro?)
Alex Reece - Pulp Fiction ?
J Majik - Your Sound (into metropolis)
Adam F - Metropolis (steppy beat - into ni ten?)
Ed Rush & Nico - Torque (sparse beat, into ni ten)
Photek - Ni Ten Ich Ryu (into shadow boxing - oriental feel)
Nasty Habits - Shadow Boxing (into dark soldier, clean dark bass)
Renegade - Dark Soldier (dark bass into mutant?)
Trace - Mutant Revisited (almost the same as sonar!)
Trace - Sonar (dark bass mixes into still)
Boymerang - Still (growly bass mixes into shining)
Optical - The Shining (2 step beat mixes into secrets)
John B - Secrets (2 step beat mixes into edtrafienicol)
Various - Edtrafienical
Ed Rush & Fierce - Locust
Ed Rush - The Raven (lighter bits mix into mute)
Matrix - Mute ? (weird snares into shape the future)
Optical - To Shape The Future (dark vibe into mind weaver)

I discovered during the lockdown that one of the best radio stations i listen to in the car is not only online, but got the latest 3 of each 'shows' available to listen and download.

The session i've been listening to the most from one of my favourite guys is probably being pulled tomorrow Friday, so i thought i'd give a heads up if anyone wants to grab it before it goes. Not only he plays quality D&B but he does a lot of really cool mini-mixes and some bootleg style jobbies. It's the 27/03 session here https://flexfm.co.uk/podcast/mutley/

The station has a load of D&B content and it's worth a perusal btw. Used ot be pirate, it's gone legal but luckily still has the vibe which is awesome, as is the music

If you like it on the harder side of DnB these are two absolutely firing mixes from the master Tech Itch (I'd forgotten about him recently which is shameful of me). A great blend of fierce tech-step, industrial jungle, and dark rollers, yes it might seem silly paying for mixes, but when they're this good....

Shambolic. https://homemadeweapons.bandcamp.com/album/gravity If you want jungle to be a humorous, light-hearted, jolly japes sort of place, turn away now. This is SERIOUS. Deep and deadly abstract beat manipulation. Strictly for those with breakbeats in their blood.

Had my records out this week. It’s pure nostalgia listening to DnB for me- I know almost nothing about anything released after about 2005 and I've forgotten lots of the ones from before that, even though I own about a thousand of them. Here’s some I rediscovered. No idea if they’re considered obvious classics or dusty relics nowadays.

This was my anthem (like the classic “Circles” it repeats Cheque, Cheque, Cheque, Cheque before the drop  ;D ) there are remixes but the original is the best.

https://youtu.be/6aPV2eRM2p0

This one is pure chaos, can be played over the top of another tune’s calm bit (I used to use the peerless “Echo Box”) to increase the pressure , then taken out to let that one drop or left in. Either way a rewind is guaranteed which lets you leave this one to drop and change to its more “heads down” atmosphere without feeling like the momentum has decreased.

https://youtu.be/girQXr6YGPw

This is too tech for me to have played it out but it’s my favourite Dom & Roland track. I’m sure Fiend knows it.

https://youtu.be/j4IcrTmUjd4

This gives me the fucking chills. There’s an easier-to-find-on-YouTube VIP mix but it’s basically the same thing just cheesed up slightly. One of the few DnB tracks that appears to change speed  (It doesn’t really though- I do have a more liquidy track that slows to a standstill before coming right back but I couldn’t find it last night as I only remember the colour of the label...) which is a useful tool to have. This version’s a little fast as it’s taken from a mix CD.

https://youtu.be/EUNHysWHve4

Really wanted to post an Artificial Intelligence track called Sky High but that’s not on Yooch sadly.

A number of the Brazilian DnB tracks sound a bit dated to me now (to be fair it might be because the smoother tracks always need a good/ big/ loud system to reveal their true heaviness) but this one is still good:

Amen to that!!

This might also be up people's streets, A-Sides still going strong with straight up dnb at 50:

Just going through A-Sides recent back catalogue and this is a fine album, mostly upbeat stuff with some dark bits and some soft bits:

https://asides.bandcamp.com/album/revisited

Also keeping it generally acceptable but still proper d'n'b, Digital has been maybe the most reliable producer in recent years, and if cheque wants something that sums up "normal" good dnb of the modern age, a couple of his compilations would be the perfect place to start:

Okay so this week I've mostly been listening to Samurai records. This is quite a contrast to the stuff Cheque posted and I replied with, distinctly radio un-friendly (an immediate selling point), not by being particularly hard, dark, fast nor noisy, but by being uncompromisingly deep, often fairly abstract, and even more cheese-free than my miserable ibs diet. I mostly knew Samurai from putting out Homemade Weapon's weighty releases, but delving deeper I've found their compilations work better (HW can get a bit relentless over an album) with a good blend of ambient jungle, dark minimal dnb, and plenty of deep halftime / autonomic (the stuff d-Bridge et al curated) tracks.

https://samuraimusic.bandcamp.com/music

These have been top picks so far:

https://samuraimusic.bandcamp.com/album/outliers-2

https://samuraimusic.bandcamp.com/album/outliers-1

https://samuraimusic.bandcamp.com/album/samurai-hannya

3 really good comps, o-2 and hann being more varied than o-1

Also a jungle release from ASC which is quite splendid:

https://asc77.bandcamp.com/album/an-exact-science

Definitely suitable chill-out listening for these dark and gloomy evenings....

Thanks that was a nice chillout mix Andy, I liked the variety.

Anyway.

JUNGLE

I've been getting into modern jungle a lot recently....old skool breakbeat and vibe driven values with modern production and refinement. It's got a lot of appeal especially compared to neuro-funk which is basically the happy hardcore of dnb now. A few labels that are representing....

https://asc77.bandcamp.com/album/isolated-systems
Okay this is not a label but it's a great jungle album on the Samurai Records label I linked a couple of posts up. Proper crisp varied breakbeats and spacey atmospheres, a refined gem.

https://skeletonrecordings.bandcamp.com/music
Good proper middle of the road jungle. A good starting spot. As an added bonus, as I'd bought two compilation albums just before they kicked off a Black Friday 50% discount later the same day, they emailed me and offered me two EP downloads for free :)

https://repertoire.bandcamp.com/music
A little bit deeper and more musical than average, you could find some gentler stuff here.

https://ruptureldn.bandcamp.com/music
Great label of a great sounding London night, good variety.

https://36hertz.bandcamp.com/music
A bit more of a jump-up influence along with some old skool rave, along with some serious amen workouts.

https://www.junodownload.com/labels/117/
A bit quiet recently from Trace's jungle offshoot label, but some great stuff from a few years ago.

https://monochromerecordings.bandcamp.com/music
A Polish label that is slightly fiercer than average but still true to the jungle spirit with some great breaks.

Almost all of these have good compilation series whence you can pick up a ridiculous amount of amen breaks and dubbed out basslines for a bargain price :)

https://soundcloud.com/fiend-ophobia/96darkness

Quote
A semi-mix / segued selection of classic dark drum'n'bass / techstep tracks from the mid-late 1990s, the era between Origin Unknown's Valley Of The Shadows creating the darkside, and until Bad Company's The Nine took it to the next rave level. Especially 96-98-ish when early Ed Rush, Nico, Optical, Doc Scott, Ray Keith, Trace etc were creating a maelstorm of stomping 2-step beats, furious amen breaks, deep reese bass and haunting sci-fi atmospheres. I'm not a DJ and can't mix so I've focused on a track selection of my favourites and hopefully a good blend of styles.

TBH despite the simplicity I'm pretty chuffed with it, even having listened to the tracks / final edit several times I haven't got bored and it still gets my head nodding

Now conveniently presented in Youtube format (remember your adblocker). As well as 30+ great tracks in 1.5 hours, it's also a slideshow of 140 pics of beautiful and varied scenery around the UK. So you can stick that on your main monitor in the background, and still keep wanking furiously over videos on your phone with some god-awful Mitboe-vs-Parkinson mash-up clickbait shite like "INSANE Lattice-approved training for indoor campussing with Magnus and Louis OMG!!!" (ugh I feel queasy even writing that). So there you go. Turn up your sub!!

P.S. cheers Motown :) Big up the rewind massive. If I'd worked out how to botch a pseudo-rewind in Audacity I might have stuck one in  :D

P.P.S. I've mostly been listening to Perc and Merzbow recently (not in collaboration alas) so I'm a bit out of touch with the latest DnB, except for this really nice track from two legends:

I'm about half way in Fiend and this is bringing back some strong late nineties memories, good choonz!

Cheers man!

I've remembered that whilst I didn't do a rewind, I did have the cunning plan of segueing the "glitched record" bits of Shadow Boxing remix and Your Sound remix together, which is pretty close  ;D

Oh gosh... hold tight all UKB massive insidetheride, you are now intuned to the sounds of the DEEJay
*airhorn*
Mike Cheque...

So I've mentioned getting my old mixes off MiniDisc a number of times on this thread. A few years ago I got a really good working MD deck with a digital output and finally got round to transferred every MiniDisc I have to my computer during the first lockdown last spring.

What I'd forgotten about the DnB ones was that whenever I recorded a really good mix I gave it away to people I wanted to impress and as I had no way to duplicate MDs it was gone forever. As a result, all those I still have (and had assumed were amazing for years) are either from when I was first learning to mix or ones I recorded at clubs or parties when I was off my head and people (myself included) were knocking drinks and ashtrays all over the decks, into my record bags, etc. so at best they're the mixtape equivalent of the proverbial curate's egg.

I did find one decent one which I believe is also the last DnB mix I ever recorded and I've just put onto Soundcloud here (https://soundcloud.com/cheque/mike-cheque-dnb-mix-20050803). Done live from genuine vinyl almost exactly sixteen  years ago. There's one proper clang that I'll let you find for yourself plus an almost complete tracklist so make sure you have a look at that as it's absolutely boggled my brain compiling it over the last 24 hours. If anyone can name the tune that drops at 42:30 than I'll be very grateful!

I hope some of you enjoy it and the transition into the last track makes you as emotional as it does me.  :'(

Gah, I'd meant to reply to that and forgot. Yes indeed a classic of the genre indeed. I actually really like the flip too as a contrast, very quirky and creative and interesting.

Back on the nu-jungle tip, Samurai have dropped their 3rd Outliers compilation of deep, dark, and deadly junglistic halftime-tinged abstract DnB and as usual there's some serious pressure on there with Last Life, Hoji and Torn being on fire:

https://samuraimusic.bandcamp.com/album/outliers-3

But for me it's slightly overshadowed by this really nice EP from Effra on Trace's 117 label, some lovely dark vibes in this, so deep you're gonna need scuba gear:

https://117audio.bandcamp.com/album/london-rain-ep

Do your ears a favour and cheque it out.

Seconded. Truly only a scratch that Tech can Itch. Used to have a load of his stuff on vinyl a million years ago when I had time to mix and disposable income to fritter on the "black crack" that a vinyl addiction brings. Owe quite a lot of my sketchy hearing to this genre of hard drum and bass (and the rest to the music of fiend's other thread - noisy guitar shizzle.   :punk:.)

Okay time for sometthing a bit different that anyone who is electronic music tolerant should give a go, whether or not they like dnb at all...

This is an absolute beauty of melodic melancholic epic drum and bass. I posted it on Facebook and got precisely 3 (three) responses and one of those was a sympathy like from Ms Fiend. So let's try here instead:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AF7ly7-mnfA

Incidentally this is part of a (now finished) Elementz Of Noize comeback, they (now him) were big in the techstep scene back in the day (tracks like Tornado, Neon, Mars Needs Women etc etc) and favourites of John Peel. He released a lot of fresh dnb after a long hiatus, the soothing Infinite Leap was one end of the spectrum, but he still did some totally off-piste chaos like this too:

Ignore this one at your peril you slackers: This is fucking MASSIVE. If you have any interest in drum'n'bass this is the best deal you will ever see: 136 (one hundred and thirty six) tracks for £12, from the mellowest of liquid rollers, the most euphoric vocal tunes, to the grizzliest minimal steppers and the hardest breakage. Calibre to Current Value, London Electricity to Limewax, Seba to Special Request. Even if you only like 1/5th of the tracks, that's still better value than any other compilation around....

OH, and it's all for charity supporting Ukraine.

It was so chilled.  Such a good vibe.  Everyone really friendly.  99% of traffic was happy to be just sat there, with many bemused drivers joining in.  Only one or two dickheads futily trying to nudge foward.  There was just one cop car that seemed to be holding traffic up at the odd round about, but I get the impression that it wasn't pre organised, just the cops reacting to it on the day.  I lost my lad initially when we joined, (he's 14) and he was it bit preturbed initially, but we found each other again and then he hooked up with a mate and left me to it.  Didn't spot any trouble.  It moves so slowly that its not really that dangerous.  Def get down to one if he's in your area.   There are lots of radio linked speakers front middle and back so it doesn't really matter where you are in the group, but the atmos is def better in and around dom himself, obv.

I don't have any techno tips at the moment but as always drum and bass and jungle are full of exciting stuff.

This time it's the follow-up to Presha's excellent RATS EP on Samurai, one of my favourite releases of last year, with one of my favourite tracks Mainliner.
https://presha.bandcamp.com/album/rats

He's released not one, not two, but THREE remix EPs for this with a variety of artists related to the roster, and the jungle remix ones are great:
https://presha.bandcamp.com/album/rats-infest-1
https://presha.bandcamp.com/album/rats-infest-2

In particular the Homemade Weapons remix of Mainliner...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XKQUHAvptvs

...and the Last Life remix of Vendetta...

I'm only one minute into 'Homemade Weapons remix of Mainliner' that you linked above. Wow. Solid tune. Not a genre I typically listen to (I'm basically stuck in a 90/00s Trance loophole...) and not one I can listen to in large quantities but that really is mighty! Definitely getting added to a 'Hype / Fuck some shit up' playlist - cheers!

Okay this is a real slice of personal history for me. I'd been into jungle / dnb for a couple of years and was pretty much loving it, but then I heard this track on John Peel in the late 90s, was listening to the first bit and thought "yeah this is pretty cool". Then.....halfway through.....the 2nd drop (needs speakers / headphones). That was it. Pretty sure I'd always be into DnB in some form after that.

Some great stuff on Over/Shadow recently - https://over-shadow.bandcamp.com/music - a vague resurrection of the legendary Moving Shadow records, with a similar high quality ethos and a good varied of refined, mostly jungle-tinged, released. A personal favourite being this excellent new one from Dom and Crystl "Stimulant" with a lovely blend of soaring melodies and tones like the cry of avian aliens, militant drums of a victorious army, and bass pulses direct from the earth's core:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fq9ql15wams
https://domandroland.bandcamp.com/track/stimulant-2

Also, I've been loving this track from a couple of years ago by Sully (who also has a release on Over/Shadow), a bit of top old skool / nu skool jungle, with a proper uplifting chopped up breakbeat work out, 1:42 should put a grin on anyone's face.

The most consistent producer in DnB is a back with an album on Over/Shadow and this magnificent (not hyperbole - that's as much "genre" as praise!) track. However loud you usually listen to DnB, add 10% and imagine yourself walking out to the wall in an IFSC final to this.

The most consistent label in DnB is back with an EP from RDG and it's a head spinner of mercilessly mechanically precise tribal-industrial post-jungle experimental breakbeat rhythm workouts. Yup it's got drums, and bass, all at a classic 170bpm tempo, but this won't get mainstream radio airplay.

Finally got around to checking those out, I got Covert:One on the basis of this extremely proper track:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ehWEclTAgFo

I have mixed feelings about Tech Itch, as much as I like a lot of his music. I get a bit annoyed with his constant over-pricing on bandcamp (£18 for a DIGITAL album?? Compared to a CD usually being <£15?? No thanks I'll stick to £7:50 at Juno), the associated delaying Juno releases for months, the trendy artist anonymity despite most of them probably being Tech Itch himself, and also bailing on Bangface with no reason given whatsoever.

Still, that's a bloody good dark roller....
