Was chatting about this with a few friends the other day, trying to work out if there's more than 100 women in the UK who have climbed 8a recently (say last 5 years or so). I think probably not but I've really got no idea how many women in the UK are climbing around that level.
Off the top of our heads we came up with the following:
Mega wads:
Mina L-W, Mecca at the tor
Hazel Findlay, Fish Eye, spain
Emma Twyford, Various
Shauna Coxsey, Watermark at wildside?
Michealla Tracey?
Karin Magog, stuff in spain?
Lucy Creamer?
Katherine Schirrmacher?
Local wads:
Cherry Bedford, Cidersoak
Wendy Coles, Watermark at Wildside
Rhoslyn Frugniet, Cidersoak
No doubt missing many people out so who can we add to the list?
-
Madeleine Cope - Raindogs (and prob plenty others)
Rachel Slater - 8a stuff in Spain
Katie Whittaker - China Crisis 8b+
Kitty Wallace - Daniboy (8a @ age 14?)
-
Tanya Meredith - GBH + more
-
Mia Stacey - Unleashing the Wild Physique (plus a bunch in Europe no doubt)
-
Mia did Flix Flax at Terradets this winter (8a+)
-
Ella Russell - Raindogs and Hurrikan in the Frankenjura
-
Shauna Coxsey, Watermark at wildside?
Michealla Tracey?
Karin Magog, stuff in spain?
Lucy Creamer?
Shauna, Michaela, Karin, Lucy - yes (I can't be bothered to list routes)
To add, for sure:
Lucy Mitchell
Lynne Malcolm
Jules Littlefair
Jenny Woodwood
Nat Berry
Katy Piddock
Charlotte Garden
Others may be able to confirm/deny:
Dalvinder?
I presume Naomi Buys?
Katy Forrester?
-
Mary Jenner did Bleed in Hell about 5 years ago; 8a on gear? (or is that a can of worms best left unopened).
-
Lucinda Whittaker?
-
Kitty Wallace - Daniboy (8a @ age 14?)
Nope - that was 2008. AFAIK she got destroyed by injury not too long after, so prob count her out.
-
Lucinda Whittaker?
Yup (the oak amongst others IIRC)
-
Others may be able to confirm/deny:
Dalvinder?
Dal mentioned to me yesterday that she had done Soft Option (now gets 8a+) - and I should imagine there are plenty more at least as hard in her tick list.
-
I presume Naomi Buys?
Raindogs - 2012
-
Haydn is actually a bloke, right?
-
Karin Magog, stuff in spain?
Katherine Schirrmacher?
Ako Shillitoe Supercool in 2012 (similar time to Lucy), think she also did The Bulge but my memory may be duff.
Katherine Schirrmacher powerplant last year plus other 8as I think.
Karin Magog did some 8bs in 2013 (http://www.ukclimbing.com/news/item.php?id=67868)
-
:clap2:
-
Natalie Tanzer I believe via Facebook... but she now lives in Spain, so not sure if that counts
-
Sylvia Fitzpatrick, lots of 8s, ditto the above.
-
I think Ruth Smitton falls within the 5yr cut off, and Julie Pearson with something in Spain last year.
-
Not done it yet but Sophie Wilmes just started trying statement of youth, I doubt it'll take her very long.
-
Rebecca King - http://www.ukclimbing.com/news/item.php?id=68459
Jo Lucas might have done one by now (she had done 7c a couple of years ago and is now touring europe climbing).
-
Top knowledge people! Here's the updated list.
Lets keep it simple and say trad doesn't count (even if it is totally badass).
p.s. mega/local wad distinction is basically arbitrary. Apologies to any mega wads who i've incorrectly labelled as local wads.
Mega wads:
Mina L-W, Mecca at the tor
Hazel Findlay, Fish Eye, spain
Emma Twyford, Various
Shauna Coxsey, Watermark at wildside
Karin Magog, El Infierno
Lucy Creamer, Supercool
Katherine Schirrmacher, Powerplant
Naiomi Buys, Raindogs
Michealla Tracey,?
Nat Berry, ?
Charlotte Garden, ?
Local wads:
Cherry Bedford, Cidersoak
Wendy Coles, Watermark at Wildside
Rhoslyn Frugniet, Cidersoak

Ako Shillitoe, Supercool
Dalvinder, Soft Option
Lucinda Whittaker, Austrian Oak
Katy Piddock, ?
Lucy Mitchell, ?
Lynne Malcolm, ?
Jules Littlefair, ?
Jenny Woodwood, ?
Natalie Tanzer, ?
Sylvia Fitzpatrick, ?
Julie Pearson, ?
Ruth Smitton?
Jo Lucas?
Katy Forrester?

Is Ruth Jenkins still working towards 8c?
-
Is Ruth Jenkins still working towards 8c?
Yes
*edit to say - sorry lagers, that was a bit brief. I'm bouldering with her brother at Anston tomorrow, I'll see what the latest news is.
-
so at least 8a then?
-
so at least 8a then?
When I was in the Ariege a couple of years back or more, she had a couple of 8a projects in a grotto, short and steep. Pretty sure she ticked the one that finished on the outside and Paul has definitely said she's working towards 8c since then - I'll check tomorrow what's what and report back.
-
Emily Allen - Aberration (http://www.ukclimbing.com/news/item.php?id=68185)
Since we seem to be adding route names, Lucy was Supercool too (maybe other harder things too, never really promoted herself) and Jules did Predator.
-
Debbie Corbett - hot fun closing and dangerous brothers in 2009

Why has Emma twyford been labelled various and others been credited with one route? Seems bizarre
-
Nice list. I've got rid of the local wads/mega wads distinction since it seemed arbitrary. I've tried to go for the hardest route/s done in the last 5 years as well

Katy Forrester?
-
Good list!
-
To continue the spirit of top trumps can someone do a list in grade order for wad partnerships (wadnerships?) within last 5 years?
i.e.
Naomi Buys/Jordan Buys, 8a+/9a = 17a+a
Jules/Stu Littlefair, 8b/8c(??) = 16bc
could be some messy ones...
-
Couple more to add...
Gill Peet - Toadall Recall
Zoe Ogden - Raindogs
-
I didn't realise that the list was for ascents in the last five years - I don't know when Dal did Soft Option (that said, I would be surprised if she hasn't ticked something 8a or above in the last 5 years - I have certainly seen her working enough of them).
-
Still unconfirmed?
Julie Pearson, ?
Katy Forrester?
Katy F says she's not done one
-
I'm reasonably sure that Dal did the Ashes/50 for 5 linkup in the last five years anyway. I''l leave her on. I'm not going there with wadnerships - the rules are too troublesome.

Cherry has also done Postman Pat 8a+
-
Cheers Toby,
A little bird told me that I'd missed off Rae Cowie and Karen Whitehouse as well. Since I've got nothing else to do, and I've watched all the climbing vids on the internet, I thought I'd make a stab of putting these in some sort of graded list as well. This has the advantage of grouping together popular ticks, for those looking to get on this list. Obviously, like all graded lists, this one is 100% accurate and beyond question.

We're over 40 by now, which is pretty cool. I can think of around 10 people who could easily be on this list, but aren't (mostly youths and indoor wads). This is still a long way short of the 100 mentioned in the original post...
-

Extreme laziness.
And good list maintenance, cheers Stu.
-

Julie Pearson, ?
Just checked her logbook - Watermark at Sella.
-
now that's a list, good one Stu
-
Nice! According to UKC there are no women climbing hard grades or 'yoof' for that matter

I think it's a great list. Loads of female climbers I've never heard of getting out there and doing good things. Not the 100 proposed, but not far off 50 (although I'm sure there are some dark horses lurking) which is impressive.

I don't get this comment, what do you mean?

Cherry has also done Postman Pat 8a+
has she now? Animal!
-

and would likely have done tuppence by now if she still lived down there.
-
I haven't found any more since last night. I'm going to give any dark horses until midnight to pipe up, and then post the definitive version of this list. If your names not on that version then I don't care what you say, you've not climbed >=8a.
Out of interest, and probably a topic for a different thread, but the equivalent grade for UK blokes is probably 8b+. Anyone fancy compiling the list for men?
-
Scratch Ruth Jenkins off - didn't get that 8a ticked in the end,was busy doing up the gite ready to sell and that's still the situation now.
-
Ruth less.
-
Pretty sure Vicki Hau ticked 8a last year?
-
Better late than never. Even had a few dark horses get in touch to make the final list! If you're on this list: you're awesome. If you're not - looks like you should book flights to the Costa Blanca this winter.

Others may be able to confirm/deny:
Dalvinder?
Dal mentioned to me yesterday that she had done Soft Option (now gets 8a+) - and I should imagine there are plenty more at least as hard in her tick list.
Soft Option still gets 8a. Though Dal did the 50/5 / Ashes link, which is 8a+.
-
Oh and Dal did La Lapin today just to confirm her into the list. Obviously got more in the tank too as it was humid as hell today.
-
Great effort. Tried it this morning with Dal, and sacked it off as too smeggy. Amazing considering.
-
no names to be mentioned, obviously, but I'd be interested to know how many of these people are over 40, over 50 etc. if anyone has a rough idea

Well, Dals over 40, and just had her second child within the last year, so even more impressive!
-
Natalie Berry is the most impressive. 105 according to 8a.nu. Makes Karin Magog look like a spring chicken.

Soft Option (now gets 8a+)
Soft Option still gets 8a.
SO has never been 8a+ or suggested as such far as i know. Dal did it really quickly if i remember right, and didn't seem to find it too bad.
Interesting that, on a quick scan, it appears to be only blokes contributing to this thread (apologies if i skimmed past some female contributers).
-
They're all too busy actually climbing.
-
They're all too busy actually climbing.
Good point :)
My inner nerd has just reported in, saying that the list should be Michaela Tracy and Mia Stacey respectively btw.

My mistake - sure that someone told me it was being upgraded in the forthcoming guide (anyone know when is is due by the way?).

I'd corrected the latter mispelling on the older posts, looks like Stu re-introduced it! To be fair to him, I was the first to get it wrong.

looks like you should book flights to the Costa Blanca this winter.
Or if you get no joy there, Kalymnos ;)

Ruth Jenkins did Zeke the Freak and, I think, Caviar and The Sissy at Rubicon in the 1990s.
-
Thanks for playing Grimer. Sadly these fail the "recent" part of the test.

You're obviously younger than I am. 1990 wasx only yesterday for me.

I was pedalling misinformation earlier; Cherry did pet cemetery, not pp; apologies. I knew the line she'd done; but got the names mixed up.
-
If we are going to that level of detail its probably worth pointing out that Jenny Woodward hasn't done Huecool.
-
Perhaps we should set this up as a sticky topic so it can be updated as more 8's (and someday a 9) get ticked and maybe change the title to something like "Fit birds who go climbing.."
-
is that part of your new, well thought out marketing strategy?
-
Sounds like the kind of thing for a Wiki page....

It could serve as an online source of photographic proof of ascents. Good idea Shark.

and an excellent soucre of beta for people who are not tall and ugly

I'd estimate half a dozen or so in their 40's and one turned 50. There are some names I've not heard of but guessing these are more likely to be younger.

If only there were some software available that allowed a web-page editable by anyone to be created and updated as required for these lists to save reposting a growing list repeatedly.
I've set up the structure and started filling in from the different threads (got work to do so don't have time to do it all now)
UK Cream of the Crop (http://ukbouldering.com/wiki/index.php/UK_Cream_of_the_Crop#Sport)
Anyone bothered with copying the rest over and/or updating might find the information on spanning rows in Wikimedia mark-up (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:Table#Combined_use_of_COLSPAN_and_ROWSPAN) useful, because without using rowspan for the cells in the grade column its tricky to start a new line within a tables cell for multiple entries within a grade.

Lisa Alhadeff did Aberration (http://www.climbingandme.com/2015/07/aberration.html?spref=fb) a few days ago :great:

nice one to Lisa, glad to see the big leg break didn't hold you back

Maddie and Michaela have both done Love Amongst The Butterflies 8b at the Cornice. Well good!
-
Molly hasn't climbed Supercool but has climbed Dead calm, if thats still eligible for the list? :P
-
Updates: added Molly Thompson-Smith, Sophia Whyte, Mhairi Thorburn. Bumped Maddie Cope up to 8a+.
You can now bump up Julie Pearson to the 8a+ list - she did Supercool at the weekend.

And then just recently cranked out Supercool 8a+ as well. Proper good effort from Lisa, who suffered a horrendous injury not that long ago. Just goes to show that if you take the right attitude to big set backs there's still more in the tank.
-
That's great, what a route to have as your first of the grade!
A new addition to the list, Laura Smitton - Oujiboard, 8a Cheedale Cornice
-
Wendy Coles has climbed Euro Fighter 8b in shipwreck cove!

Plus a few other 8a / 8a+

Roz Frugtniet can be bump up the list after redpointing Lightning 8b in Yagshuo.

Animal! remember her climbing at Leeds Wall, very driven.
-
Scanning 8a.nu I see Charlotte Garden has done Lightening and The Beer Tastes Good - both 8b at Yangshuo. Also making it onto the list are: Alice Hafer (Single Life at Yangshuo and Ansia at Chulilla both 8a) and Jessica Mccaskey (Sufferance 8a at Dumbarton)

Yeah, driven is a good description. I climbed with her at Leeds once because two previous climbing partners that day had got tired and gone home. A few hours later I followed suit and I think she found another belayer afterwards!
-
It doesn't really changer her position but Maddy Cope styled her way up Predator for her second 8b the other day! :2thumbsup:
-
Good stalking skills Dunc. I can trump you though, by pointing out that your very own landlord Michaela should be on the 8b list twice as well, having also climbed Love Amongst The Butterflies. My coat is already on....
-
Wicked Gravity 8b at Malham for Naomi Buys yesterday, her first at the grade.
Big tick personally for her for various reasons not least that she was eyeing the belay two years ago.

That's a great effort. I've belayed a couple of decent climbers on that and they didn't make it look easy... and they've both climbed above 8b.
And for Lucy Mitchell - well, it just keeps coming from her!

Whilst wondering about other Brit women flashing 8a+ I thought I'd update this - must be loads more since 2016 but this has the last wiki update, plus all the comments on this thread since Remus posted, Llinos Cassidy (Vernnerne at Shipwreck Cove) plus Hazel and Emma doing Mind Control.

Still missing:
Maddy - Bat Route 8c
Michaela - Love amongst the Butterflies 8b
Need a trad equivalent as well seeing as Hazel, Maddy and Emma have all climbed E9 - anyone else? How many other women have climbed E8, I can think of Michaela, Caro. Lucy Creamer perhaps? Then there is onsighting, any female E7 onsights?
-
Shouldn't Tanya Meredith be higher on the list for the Longridge traverse?
-
The list might be a tad unwieldly at 8a and upwards, there must be loads missing. I can think of two straight away and I'm not even 'in the know.'
-
Dan - Michaela is already on at 8b, I've moved Maddie up.
Think there was a trad thread somewhere, have a look.
Andy - Traverses don't count - thin end of the wedge innit, you'll want toproping or plastic next!
spidermonkey09 - stick 'em on!

It is somewhat arbitary, and my comment was tongue in cheek, but I still don't think it should count - for this list - of course it's much harder than 8a, but it's also not a sport route.

Frances Bensleyhas also done Kalea Borroka

Moby Dick. Given that Amanda probably stopped on crux intermediate non-existent crimp holds to clip as usual it could be 8b her way ;)
-
Some more South Wales women to add to the list:
Gwen Morgan - Vennerne 8a
Sarah Black - Vennerne 8a
Zoe Peetermans - Statement of Youth 8a and something others
Emily Phillips - an 8a abroad whilst pretty young (it’s on a UKC news thread somewhere)
-
Moved Frances up, added Amanda, Anna, Charlotte, Gwen, Sarah, Zoe, and Emily.
Surely Hannah Slaney should be on here?? What's the world come to when you can win the world junior bouldering without an 8a tick ;)

Yes I would vote to remove 'recent'. Surely there is no time criterion involved

Agreed. Original question was "...within the last 5 years", but it feels a bit arbitrary and the list isn't that long so might as well aim to make it comprehensive.

Nice one, nothing like a good list! :clap2:

If time isn't a criterion, should we also add Rachel Farmer then? Also think that Lucy Ellis has climbed Raindogs...

Punterish level of historical knowledge here...but what was Rachel's hardest route? There's some pics knocking around of her trying Chouca but can't remember if she did it. Other than that it was Raindogs wasn't it?

Maybe the level has improved so much that it should start at 8a+ or even 8b? As a parallel, nobody would think to try and list males who have climbed 8A and above these days but there is a thread on this from 10+ years ago.
That would remove the need to go delving into the early 90's for 8a's. In 5 years time, the 8a list will be far too big anyway.
-
I think while the total's under 100 then no need to increase the cut off - tbh how many 8a's from the 90's are there?
-
Remus: not sure tbh, I'd just assumed Raindogs was her hardest because I hadn't heard of the first female UK 8a+... Come to think of it, I have no idea who were the first British females to climb 8a+-8c! Like with Rhoslyn's 8a+ flash, is it worth adding "first's" next to the relevant climbers name?
Let's just start the list at 9a and be done with it :devil-smiley:
-
First 8a+ - Ruth Jenkins -Caviar. First 8b Ruth Jenkins - Zeke. First 8b+ - Lucy Creamer - Kalea Borroka (I think).
-
Gwyneth Uttley has climbed Pren Nota and Cider Soak, both 8a, recently according to UKC
-
Ben, hmm let's leave it at raindogs then.
Added notes etc. and new people.
https://github.com/bourbonspecial/UKWomen8a/blob/master/table.md
-
If we go that far back then don't we need to add in Fliss Butler, Naomi Guy and probably others.

Alison Cowley - Johnnie Walker 8a (Calames, 1999).

I'm pretty certain FB did Statement at LPT but am much less sure about NG, probably best not to take my failing memory as gospel.
-
Imogen "Honda" Horrocks - The Hatchling 8a (https://twitter.com/ImogenClimbs/status/1010649389499600896)

this list is for 8a not 8A

Ah yes - hence Chuffing section.
My bad.

A couple of older ones - Anne Arran (Cauchemar de Elephant) and Airlie Anderson (Reve de Papillon).
Also, an old friend of mine, Helen Dudley - can't remember the route/routes, but reasonably sure she did one BITD. Might have been something like Coliseum at Rodellar.
Finally, not really UK but how about Mary Jenner/Birkett. Did Bleed in Hell which is meant to be about 8a. After all, Silvia Fitzpatrick is in the list.

A mega effort, but not really sport.
Silvia: She's down for "4 8as in 2014", any clarification on that? She'll have to be excised from the list if it's not accurate :coffee:

Silvia’s from Argentina. Mary’s from SA. Both live or lived in the UK. I was commenting on the UK nature of the list, not the 8a bit. Think Silvia did Lourdes amongst others.
-
It's a good list. Would be interesting if you could add the year of ascent, or maybe just decade if that's too tricky.
-
Silvia reports on her blog in 2009 that she has just completed her second F8b.

I'm pretty certain FB did Statement at LPT but am much less sure about NG, probably best not to take my failing memory as gospel.
Im certain Fliss Butler did Statement of Youth cos I read about it in On the Edge years ago. So the question mark could be removed from the list.
-
Bumped Silvia up to 8b. Added the years column and filled in details I could find, lots missing at 8a+ and below though. Got rid of the question mark for Fliss Butler on SoY.

This article (https://www.v-publishing.co.uk/blog/v-publishing-blog/2013-07-22---the-peak-of-womens-climbing.html) has a pic of Ruth on Zeke dated 1995. Weirdly can't find anything online about Leah doing Revelations, though I remember it (and the thread on here :worms:)
-
It was reported in Climber Magazine that Karin and I both climbed Mundo Feliz 8b+ last autumn.

Tania and Gill have both done traverse of the gods 8b+. :worms:

Seems a bit of a weird thread in general...
Interestingly I was chatting about it with my girlfriend last night and she expressed a similar sentiment. It's certainly not meant to be patronising, so it's a shame if it comes across like that. Personally I think it's well cool that there are so many women in the UK who are climbing hard, and it's particularly cool that there are loads of names on there who I haven't heard of before. Really makes you appreciate the depth and diversity of climbing. To me it also offers a pretty interesting historical perspective (e.g. it took <5 years to go from 8a to 8b, then 14 years to go from 8b to 8b+ and then another 5 years to go to 8c.)
-
I thought it seemed more celebratory than patronizing personally (speaking as a male). Yeah it's a bit weird with the only contributors (as far as I can see on the past few pages at least) being males, but I think that is representative of UKB as a whole, rather than just this thread. Given that there is 'Males who have climbed >8b+' thread I think it would be even weirder to studiously avoid any thread or discussion about female UK sport standards.

I'm quite surprised and think it's a shame too! Listing climbers achievements seems to be a UKB hobby with threads for men sport climbing (https://ukbouldering.com/board/index.php/topic,26017.0.html) and bouldering (https://ukbouldering.com/board/index.php/topic,26074.0.html), women bouldering (https://ukbouldering.com/board/index.php/topic,26077.0.html), trad climbing (https://ukbouldering.com/board/index.php/topic,26071.0.html) and old folks (https://ukbouldering.com/board/index.php/topic,25046.0.html).
-
I thought it was just that there are certain things which are worth recording for historical relevance a la Elizabeth Hawley.
-
The thread does not resonate with me personally. (Had a conversation with someone at the crag about this earlier this week and both of us were uncomfortable with it to some degree).
I’m going to be devils advocate and try to provoke a few thoughts - so do you think it would be fine to have a thread titled “disabled people who’ve recently climbed >=7a”?
-

If people were interested then yes I genuinely would be. I think it's only patronizing if you see the 'other-group' as inferior in some way, which in both cases I do not. Counter-hypothetical question: should males stop posting news about female ascents on the significant repeats thread? Because a quick glance makes that look like it's been only males posting for the last four pages (as far as I went back, and caveat that I might have mis-guessed someone's gender) but that regularly reports female repeats.
Obviously this board is very male dominated. It would be nice if there was a more representative balance of the genders. I don't think that treating the genders differently is likely to achieve that (i.e. by only having threads about male significant repeats or lists of male ascents).
I should perhaps add that earlier in the week when it first occurred to me that the thread became active again I began feeling some discomfort with the idea of a load of blokes talking about ascents by females, but really, on reflection, it is purely congratulatory. The only real chat has been about how strong women's standards are in the UK. It's a long way from DFBWGC - but then also a good sign that we can have a conversation about if it may unwittingly come across as patronizing.

What do you think the problem would be with having a thread listing notable climbing achievements of people with disabilities?

None. But it’s not that - it’s a list of people who’ve climbed above an arbritarty grade.
The grade is the problem - I think.
-
What reeve said. I can't see how this is patronising. I also can't see how this is any different from any discussion of female records in any sports. Would you object if someone made a list of the fastest uk female sprinters?
Is the issue that it's mostly blokes talking about women? Yes, it's a male dominated forum, but it seems to me a sign of a healthy society that guys are just as excited about and interested in women's sporting records as they are men's. Several sports have some way to go in this regard, but I'm glad if (as it seems from this thread) climbing isn't one of them.
-
I find it pretty hard to see how this thread could be viewed negatively. I think the grade threshold is bit odd as whilst climbing 8a is a big personal achievement its not really the cutting edge of uk womens sport climbing.
-

But the list isn’t the best women climbers - it’s a list of those climbing above a grade.

Listing people who perform to a certain standard seems to be a pretty common thing though - there are lists of Aussie men who've run sub 4 min miles (https://www.runnerstribe.com/features/the-sub-4-minute-listing-chronological-listing-of-australian-male-milers/), snooker players who've made a maximum break (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maximum_break#Official_list), and indeed of men who've run 100m under 10s (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/10-second_barrier#Electronically_timed_marks).
-
If women contributed to ukb threads about categorising female climbing achievements then men wouldn't have to and it would stop accusations of patronage. But they don't (contribute). So in their absence, 'men who like to categorise', i.e. most men, can either: ignore categorising female achievements and risk being accused of being part of the ignorant patriarchy; or categorise female achievements and risk accusations of being patronising.
'You can please some of the people' etc.
It's almost if as some people don't appreciate being categorised! Either as 'DFWGC' or 'good at climbing'.
I think 8a is meaningless though if it's supposed to be some decent standard of rock climbing that we're pigeonholing people into. 8b would be more like it.
-
But the list isn’t the best women climbers - it’s a list of those climbing above a grade.
In sprinting - they may list the fastest men and fastest women in the world etc...but They don’t say “women who can run under 11 seconds are...”
I think in the running world they also make a point of recording who has run fastest this year, regardless of how close it is to the record. But anyway...
This list is someone's attempt to figure out how many women are operating in the 8's. It seems to be an honest question about the depth of talent in uk women's climbing, even if 8a seems a (patronisingly?) low bar to some. But I know plenty of people who see 8a as a huge achievement. Perhaps those who think this list is patronising are not thinking about the other perspective?
Maybe 8a turned out to be the wrong cut off, but unless you visit hard sport crags or hang out with lots of good sport climbers, how would you know? People operate in very different climbing bubbles, in what is after all a niche sport. This list provides an answer to a question. It looked to me like honest curiosity. I'm a little sad that it looks different to others.

Did a quick write up of the lists on the lattice blog if anyone fancies a quick read https://latticetraining.com/2018/08/30/the-best-sport-climbers-in-the-uk/ No great insights but it's interesting to look at the top names.

That’s not a new youngest is it?

Got to be close.
Done a little tidying of the list. Added Mind Control for Maddie, and bumped Shauna down to 8a for Watermark ages ago. Surely she's done something harder than that? Any ideas?

-
Another name not on the list... Rebekah Drummond ...with two 2018 8a’s.
“Transilvania” at Margalef, Feb 2018
“Shimmy Sham” at Myopics Buttress, Dunkeld, Aug 2018
Also, Koon Morris added a second 8a to her palmares, with a send of the tough Dave Macleod 8a, “Axiom” at Tunnel Wall, Creag a’ Bhancair, Jun 2019.
-
Thanks JLS, I've updated the list https://github.com/bourbonspecial/UKStrongPeople/blob/master/women_routes.md
-
Emma Twyford on Big Bang. A momentous occasion for the list!
https://github.com/bourbonspecial/UKStrongPeople/blob/master/women_routes.md
-
Thea Cameron did Espirit Rebeld 8b in Rodellar last week.
-
Waddage, thanks for the heads up, I'll add her when I'm next at a computer. So I don't forget, Nat Fenech also did her first 8a recently.
-
Without wanting to sound mean, I really don't think Esprit is 8b. Maybe you can put it as a+/b if you're using slash grades and feeling friendly.. I don't think it gets plain old 8b in any of the newer topos.
-
That’s not mean Alex it’s perfectly reasonable. Whatever the consensus grade is seems fair and I don’t think Thea has claimed 8b (or not that I’ve seen) more that I heard she had done it and looked it up online and jumped to conclusions maybe. Whatever the grade, she should be added to the list and I think it’s a great effort.
Wouldn’t want anyone appearing on these pieces of gospel information without the grade being absolutely concrete haha. Good job era vella and bad girls club are so solid at the grade :-*
Never mind the big grades for bad beta things I’ve done.
And I’m pretty sure ours aren’t nearly the most dodgy of things on the lists.
-
We saw Thea send it. Absolutely fantastic climb, she looked rock solid on it. It had been raining all morning and she ticked it just a few hours before it seeped through. It has been unclimbable since. Immaculate timing!
-
Thanks for the clarification Alex, good to have a new entrant on the list whatever the grade! https://github.com/bourbonspecial/UKStrongPeople/blob/master/women_routes.md

Just wanted to say how inspiring I find this thread, always get excited when I see a new post on it. It's helping with the psych as I try to get back to it after baby number 2...
-
Great to hear Battery, glad you find it so inspiring :)
I've added Jen Wood, bit of an omission as she'd done loads at 8a https://github.com/bourbonspecial/UKStrongPeople/blob/master/women_routes.md
-
Just had a browse through 8a.nu and made a few additions and a load of updates and corrections https://github.com/bourbonspecial/UKStrongPeople/blob/master/women_routes.md
-
Nice one. One to add to women’s bouldering from a while back is Mia Stacey for Walk on By 7c+.
-
Shauna must have done harder than 8a?
-
Realised you asked this a while ago, but still.
Also while you're tidying, the youngest note on Emily Phillips should be taken off I think?
-
Shauna must have done harder than 8a?
I think she climbed an 8b in Santa Linya but I can't find any reference to it online so maybe I made it up.
-
Crazy how she never finished off Hubble. Looked super close the day I saw her, really casual as ever.
I think comps must have got in the way?
Was great to watch though
-
Ferdia climbed The Invisible Girl (8a) on slate sometime last year.
Grade may be unconfirmed as I don't know if anyone else has repeated it.

Hasn't Shauna climbed The Beast 8b?
-
Do you mean The Beast 8c on the Diamond? In which case no. Or The Brute 8b on the Diamond? Also no afaik.
-
Sorry, yeah I meant The Brute. Could have sworn she mentioned that she'd done it. Must be mistaken.
-
Thanks for the updates. T_B, I've added Mia to the bouldering list and Andy I've added Ferdia.
https://github.com/bourbonspecial/UKStrongPeople/blob/master/women_routes.md
Would be great if we could pin down what Shauna's done on a rope. Seems crazy that she's bouldered 8B+ but not done a lot of hard stuff on a rope, can't be many people who's font grade > sport grade!

Looking forward to the day when you poor, unenlightened souls tie in to a rope and realise there's no hard moves on sport routes ;D

All moves are hard when your forearms are locked solid with pump.

Molly Thompson-Smith has continued her recent spree with another 8c in the Frankenjura. According to the list this makes her the 2nd best British female sport climber https://github.com/bourbonspecial/UKStrongPeople/blob/master/women_routes.md
Given how quickly she's been ticking off 8cs you've gotta think there's opportunity for her to become the first British woman to climb 8c+.

Anna Gilyeat cruised her first 8a+ yesterday. Think it’s called Anger management? Links body machine into top of crucifixion via rage?
Was mega to watch though, she’s on fire at the mo. Has done crucifixion, ouijaboard, and aberration in the last few weeks.

Oh keeper of the stats, can you please update Jemma Powell to 8b for climbing 'The Brute' on the Diamond.
-
Ask and you shall receive https://github.com/bourbonspecial/UKStrongPeople/blob/master/women_routes.md
What a mega effort from Jemma! Don't know if it's an omission but she wasn't on the list previously so very impressive first entry if so.
-
Jem should have been on the list for climbing a few 8a's before. She skipped 8a+ with her ascent of the brute. It was mega to watch - looked like she had plenty left in the tank, a return to the fitness and form that she used to display as British lead champion year after year. Total wad!

Rachel Pearce climbed Rembrandt (8a) at Olympos, Leonido today. This would be her first 8a.

Good knowledge, I've added her to the list https://climbing-history.org/

Harriet Ridley needs adding for doing Mussel Beach back in July https://www.instagram.com/p/CCLEEjJDkSi/
Jemma Powell has also done it.
-
Funny you should mention her as I literally added her ascent of mussel beach 20 mins ago (after she was mentioned in the trad thread).

I could have sworn I saw an Instagram story from Lucy Mitchell yesterday saying she’d flashed an 8b but can’t find any evidence of that. Did I just imagine/misunderstand this or did anyone else see it?

Shark reported it in significant repeats:https://ukbouldering.com/board/index.php/topic,10607.msg644947.html#msg644947 (https://ukbouldering.com/board/index.php/topic,10607.msg644947.html#msg644947)
According to her Facebook story Lucy Mitchell flashed her first 8b - I’m presuming at St Leger. I’ve dropped her a message to find out which one

Frances Bensley did Mecca yesterday.

Also Praniania 8b at St Leger, Le fight du beau gosse 8b+ at Lourmarin(?) and at least 1 other 8a at Venasque in another more recent trip....
-
To clarify, in case anyone (mis)reads the above how I did because of the quote (i.e I thought rodders was saying she'd flashed the other 8b and 8b+), rodders doesn't mean she flashed those. https://www.8a.nu/user/lucy-mitchell/sportclimbing
Still, looks like a very good autumn :strongbench:
-
Sorry for the confusion, should have worded that better, the 8a and 8b+ were done in a day I believe.
-
So was the 8b OS or flash? facebook link that shark posted a while back says flash but it's down as OS on 8a.poo
How's Remus supposed to keep accurate lists with this sort of sloppiness??
-
Hazel has “finished off” Esclatamasters. No green tick ;-) Sounds like she still treats sport climbing as training for trad.
-
So that's first E9, first E10, first 8c, first (only) 8c+(/E10), and second 9a by British woman. Plus the el cap stuff, multiple E7s first go, 8a+ onsight...
Mental.
-
Gwyneth Uttley climbed Kalea Borroka (8b+) yesterday.
-
Prudence Morgan-Wood seems more than qualified for this list! Her UKC log provides the deets I guess https://www.ukclimbing.com/logbook/showlog.php?id=358350
Also Alice Thompson did Powerplant recently and more impressively (I think) did a swung leads on-sight of Tout pour Le Club at Taghia although, again, the only details of this I know are through logbook stalking!
-
Good updates, I've updated ch https://climbing-history.org/list/2/strong-british-female-sport-climbers

Just seen that Flo Tilley isn’t on your list, yet has climbed 2 8a+; Bullet and la Montana magica in chulilla. C’mon Remus! :P

Such aspersions! :-* She's on the list for Montana Magica, but I had it in at 8b as I didn't realise it seems to have settled at 8a+.
-
Aha! Sorry, thought I’d seen her there before but wondered what had happened. Think Montana is thought of as 8a+ now, could be wrong though as it looked tricky!
-
Seems like most people on 8a.nu suggest 8a+ so probably due a downgrade on ch.
-
Jemima Churchhouse did Aberration last year in about three sessions, which is not bad for someone who's previous best redpoint was 7a+.

Mega, that's quite the jump! I've added her to the list.

Ace! She was looking strong on Sunday, glad to hear she got it done. First 8a I think?
-
Just realised neither Kim nor Anna Mountney are on there. Kim did Le Lapin in 2020 and Anna did Complete Control in 21. They’ve both since done others.
-
Nice, I've added them to the list.
