just read on tim kemple's blog (http://kemplemedia.com/blog/2008/10/16/goodbye-alpinist/) that Alpinist (http://www.alpinist.com/) is closing up. damn shame. that is a fine magazine.

A fucking tragedy. Sadly predicted from the start, only 9000 subscribers, but while it lasted they made an incredible job. Back to fucking comics again now.
-
A sad loss, although I must say I baulked at the price tag on more than one occasion. You could get a decent novel for less!
-
What a shame, although I'm not surprised, I love Alpinist but it's just so expensive I can't usually justify spending that much on a mag. I'm a bit pissed this is happening now though, I was going to demand a subscription for Christmas from someone better off than me :(

Get a subscription to the US Climbing Mag. Good value, great mag.

You could get a decent novel for less!
It was ten pounds over the counter. Now I don't live in JimWorld, but that's fuck all, its not like its going to get read once and thrown like the novel. Look at it this way, you only get two copies of the other rags and a mars bar for the same money. I know which is the wiser investment. Full sets of Alpinist will be selling for a fortune in 5 years time.

I bought this once. I quite liked it, although there was nothing in it about the tor and I had to keep phoning you up to ask what bits of it meant. I didnt buy it again.

A real shame.
I subscribed to it at first but the copies never arrived. At the time, I must have emailed about 4 separate people but they never even replied, so I thought f*ck that and stopped my subscription.
Tried again recently with a subscription and got brilliant service. It was as if they'd totally turned things around. A shame that the magazine (pubishers?) seemed to have been run so appallingly at first (I have heard this from others also). I suspect they lost a lot of customers's trust.
They never did a Mont Blanc Mountain Feature did they?
What will fill the vacuum I wonder?

A rare quality magazine.
The value for money thing is a no brainer for me, there was more of interest to me in one copy of Alpinist than ten copies of most magazines.
-
Exactly. I regretted not getting them all as soon as the warehouse burnt down.
I do believe its the future for magazines though, if there is a future. The kind of ephemeral chip paper stuff we're used to is rightly moving online. Paper copy should concentrate on having some archival worth.

HALLELUJAH! Just read on UKC that Alpinist has been bought out and will rise again. A good chance it's the same editor, and the production/editorial values should be preserved. That's cheered me right up. Get in.
-
does that mean I can now get the issues of my subscription they never bothered to send (or lost and never bothered to replace...)
currently missing 23 and 25 if anyone has spare copies
-
new editor installed, next issue due in April. (http://www.alpinist.com/) hopefully it will be just as good as before.
-
Fingers crossed. Perfectly described by a colleague as climbing pr0n.
April 15th = :wank:
