Wow! I'm a massive Dylan fan, but I realise he isn't to everyone tastes, muscially or indeed lyrically. Very interesting choice.

I thoroughly approve.

Think I might have to do a deep dive on his music again (see you in a few days). :-)

Also if you haven't read Chronicles Vol. 1. Dylan writes very well too.

Note: Can anyone (mods) fix the title of the thread. I messed up the Bob.

Baby-boomers not dead yet! Great choice in my view.

Since when was it a popularity contest?

Well deserved.

What the fuck?

To establish my credentials: some of my earliest memories are sharing the living room floor as a toddler with an eight track tape recorder on which my dad and my uncle were listening to the early Dylan albums over and over again. Fast forward a decade and a bit to my adolescence, much of it spent listening to the same albums over and over again myself - we had a record player by then. Queued all night to get tickets for Earls Court on the '78 tour, then also made it to Blackbushe a few weeks later.

I know it's a sad old-fart-slightly-too-young-to-be-a-boomer cliche, but I would defend Highway 61 to the death as Best Album Ever Made.

But what the fuck?

Dylan is a musician, and anybody (like my dear departed dad, who was a poet) who mainly focuses on the words is missing three quarters of the picture. A large part of his greatness is as a bandleader. Just look at th musicians he was able to attract to work with him. Not just The Band either - check out the amazing collection of unsung session geniuses on Blonde on Blonde, just for an eg the piano on One Of Us Must Know. Can't reduce this to mere "literature".

An interesting dissenting view from Hari Kunzru:

That brief piano riff in the chorus of One of Us Must Know is one of my favourite little pieces of music ever. I always point it out to people when the song comes on.

I saw his name trending yesterday and my first thought was "Oh no..." then I read the news [emoji41]

I got this for Christmas last year and have been reading it whilst listening to Bob as I was a neophyte until fairly recently.  It's a coffee table book with a chapter for every album and a short piece in every song - really great.  It'll make a nice gift for any Dylan fan.

Agreed, I don't think it is (or ever should be) a popularity contest. I more meant that I'm sure people will strongly argue that his lyrics aren't literature and hence undeserving of the prize. And hence an interesting choice. I for one couldn't be happier.

A friend of mine (American, ageing hippy, really good bloke) started a Facebook post thus yesterday:

"I only met Dylan once. I went to a party in the Village in December 1976 or January 1977 that he attended. He met me at the door wearing his "Desire" hat, and said "My name's Bob. What's yours and why are you here?" I was so floored ..."

How bloody cool is that?!
