Title: How to get good skin?
Post by: Sloper on November 01, 2009, 07:07:47 pm
With a weekend in the County on the way how do I get good skin as mine seems to be thin and painful far too often.

Do I 'man up' and tell Mrs Sloper to do the washing up, not take Sloper jnr to the pool this week, stop washing (not a bad idea) or is there something else that could help?

Use NHS hand alcohol based gel 50 times a day, train on wood, sand off lumpy bits by joints and very very cautiously use antihydral.

The county ain't too rough.. Keep well moisterised, actually do the washing up and keep the skin hydrated and strong.

I have a pass from Occy Health so I don't have to use the gel now.  Previous job I had to use it 100+ times a day, and I had open sores on my hands.  At least they were clean though  :-\

Think it's been said on here many times, but steer clear of Superchalk.

I've just bought some hand moisturiser from Lush that seems to be keeping my skin OK despite regular trashing at the wall / crag.

This stuff heals and toughens skin, its meant for agricultural/veterinary use but genuinely is magic, just put it on the thin areas though, because it toughens/thickens whichever area it touches.

Also if you wash of chalk thoroughly after climbing it won't stick around and dry out your skin, and a pummise? stone, not sure of spelling to 'sand of' your dead skin will help as well, as dead skin inhibits skin regrowth, as well as giving you 'segs' which get caught on the rock and stretched - which can make things painful due to minor bruising under the skin.

Don't use Climb On, it's a herbal remedy so simply won't work.

Bag balm looks worth a try - seems to be cheap as well.

I found this cream in Font, or rather a local recommended it to me. It really is very very good and is far better than anything i have used before. Its called Avibon cream, and you can only get it in French pharmacy's. Its is for people that workl with their hands a lot. After application, once its dried up, your skin feels instantly better.

Sypeland Outdoor used to sell some stuff, but according to their website, things are afoot there. Hope Francis is doing OK.

I like this stuff

I use boots own brand hand moisturiser. comes in at about £1.20 for a 50ml tube. Which compared to climb-on and sypeland stuff is a bargin. And seems to work just as good as any other moisturiser i've tried. and I've tried a few.

dave mac talks about udder cream in his book - which I think is similar to the bag balm -  very cheap (http://www.animalmedicationdirect.co.uk/udder-cream-battles-250g-400g-125kg-35kg-pr-6166.html) - not tried it myself

This is bullshit. Have any of these so called 'remedies' passed a double-blind test on a sample size of at least 1000 climber's hands? Have they fuck. They should all be fucking banned, its an insult to medicine.

You could just use the homeopath's handcream of choice:

I've had crap, painful thin skin for years and years. Then I found that Antihydral stuff they sell at the Works. It's changed my world!

I no longer have to pack in after a couple of hours and can actually climb 2 days in a row fairly hard outside, which never happened before. Best bit of climbing kit I've ever bought for sure.

I tried every other remedy under the sun, including those above in this thread and they never do much for people with truely shit skin I think. Pissing on your hands never worked for me either if you ever try that out of desperation!  :-[

Antihydral is strong stuff, I use it but wouldn't recommend it for routine use. In the past I've used Alum which works and is less harsh.

as said before, i found a big big help in aloe vera 99,9% gel.
i still use loads of chalk in the gym and at the boulders (superchalk), and my skin doesn't peel and break as before.
plus, it dries out in seconds so you can actually use during the climbing day/session.

Call me a homopath, but rule number one of skincare must shirley be washing your hands post climbing. I am a regular superchalk abuser and if I don't wash it off my hands end up as dry and cracked as a nuns whatnot. I use antihydral and moisturiser and if you catch me bitching about redtips I will personally drive us to Scunnie for some buildering. If all else fails simply open a large can of Manthefuckup, immerse fingers, then down it in a one-er.

if i can go multi days anyone can

i can't but then that is probably because of my terrible habit of drinking formalin while at work.

The alternative to having good skin is just get good at climbing with tape on your fingers, plus climbing with tape on your fingers gives you:
a) a great excuse for failure (especially if you lose a comp by one point) and
b) the lingering hope that when you skin finally heals you won't be utterly sh*t  :'( boo hoo
