Title: The Peak Bouldering Guide is OUT!
Post by: Ru on January 17, 2005, 02:11:28 pm
Thousands of the buggers have just been delivered to the distributors.

It should be available in Outside by Wednesday and lots of other shops shortly after.

Or order direct from www.v-graphics.co.uk

When the other lot (that have not gone to the distributors) gets delivered (this aft or tomorrow) the really keen can pop into Vertibrate Graphics on Psalter Lane in Sheff and get one there.

Don't hassle me as I've not gone any yet (but will have shortly).

Well I haven't got any yet, but if you order one through the site you get 'em for £18 (it says pre-order to get this price but this price will be prabably be kept open for a while).

If you go into Vertibrate Graphics its self they'll be this price too, but they've not been delivered there yet (tomorrow I think).

The shop at The Edge has just got a few copies in/left! Looks very nice, all 350 pages of it! Well done Ru. Now the blue touch paper of publication has now been lit - stand back and watch the fireworks! I reckon there'll be a lot of arguments over grades, grading systems, etc, etc. after the few comments I heard in the shop earlier, but isn't there always.

I personally am disappointed that the photo of the sheep has my name under it - kinda looks like the wooley animal is called Percy..... I have had my hair cut recently, but any resemblance to a sheep is surely some mistake?!?!
Title: The Peak Bouldering Guide is OUT!
Post by: Ru on January 18, 2005, 10:10:58 pm
Yes, we all thought that was funny too, but then we tracked down the sheep in question to ask if it minded whether its photo went in, and it turns out that, by amazing coincidence, it's name actually is Percy Bishton as well.

You couldn't make it up.

Fantastic effort Ru (and Jon) - a batch of the guides arrived in V12 Outdoor today and I was straight down there to check it out.

I left a copy with Mark - Matrix 10 - Lynden (the designer for the N Wales guide) for an hour this afty whilst I was in a meeting and he came back singing its praises.

Hope to road test it soon. yip, yip, yip...

Received my guide yesterday and subsequently spent a lot of the evening looking through it.  It is excellent.  The descriptions, comments, pictures, layout and presentation are all great and I look forward to using it (even if I don't really understand the grades :) ).  A lot of time has gone into this guide and it shows.  So a very big congratulations to Rupert and John.

I'm just worried about wrecking it now, I don't usually look after my guides so well.

This guide is nothing short of a revelation. A revelation I tell you.

The ticklist at the back appears to be selective, i.e it only includes the best problems out of a selective guide. Despite this there are 210 or so problems harder than 7b in the ticklist.

I have climbed a piffling 47, which was a bit of a blow to the self-image I have as a bit of a peak master, I can tell you. I'm gonna ship in a job-lot of extra skin, and go ticking  :x

received my copy yesterday - an absolutely fantastic effort with an appealing,  clear and stylish layout.  Good photographs too - moved one of my workmates (a rowing coach and amateur photographer) to remark on the skills of the snappers and declare that he can now see why I boulder - high praise indeed (though as he's bad with heights his approval may just be due to the diminutive size of some of the problems).  Now I've just got to get down to the Peak more than a couple of times a year!

Font is the week from the 12th March, just don't know exactly which days we will be there. I'll let you know.

Enjoy spain.

been lacking motivation lately but gotta say I'm hyper-psyched after poring over the guide - here's hoping for a decent day's weather on Sunday so I can use it in anger!

bo - got the guide today - mad props to Rupizzle for laying the shizzle down, bad boy style.

Glad to see that out of the Dyno list theres only 3 I ain't done. One of those i've nearly hung, one i've never even been to the crag and the other is unclimbed by anybody. Where i come from thats a result. Any advance on 7?  Selecta.

its proper bo, good effort to all concerned. noticed GO West is in the graded list twice. Other mistake is where it says the submergance is 7c and 7b+ for the tall it should say "7b+ and for the shorties heres the worlds smallest violin".

Thats is all.

Ru - the ultimate acolade. Showed people at work and they thought it looked awesome. I don't think they knew what bouldering looked like and it made it feel 'real'. nice work! Kind of put a damper on it when i said i hadn't done most of them 'why is there only one tick on this list' etc etc

off the top of my head, the dynos (not lack of apostrophe) are, maurice gibb,  wimberry project, hurricane, roaches dyno, buckstone dyno, sly stallone, and 4 other that i've done but can't rememer. might be jetpack, crash n gurn, pooh and/or rocket man, and maybe another.

Just recently got the guide - won it in a caption competition!  :D

Got to be one of the best prizes I've ever won. (I got a remote control car from Volvo once, that was pretty good too.) Anyway, nice one Ru, it looks great, can't wait to get out and use it. Spent a while comparing it with my rockfax and realising I needed to do sit-starts to almost everything to get a tick in the new guide!   Like that problem at Rowtor that used to be a B5 mantel and now is 7b from a sitstart. The mantel was hard enough! What's this about a heel jam? I kept pulling over and then getting literally stuck on top of my arm.

Anyway, it's all gravy. Great guide, well done.

sly stallone
roaches dyno
buckstone

hurricane
maurice gibb
wimberry project

thats only 9 - whats t'other one? summert on the eagle stone?

Title: The Peak Bouldering Guide is OUT!
Post by: dave on February 10, 2005, 01:30:49 pm
hmmm, thats a tricky one. top ten pure dynos eh.......presumably grit only.

Buckstone Dyno
Roaches Dyno
Big one right of Bulb, eagle tor.
Wimberry Project
Maurice Gibb (never seen it but its gotta be good)
That one at Stanton Moor, near king stone
Where Beagles Dare
The one off undercuts at West, but Jimbo's version, left hand in undercut, right on crimp, catch top with right.
Pooh
Jetpack

pooh and jetpack aint amazing though, but struggling to think of ten

Invalid ones - deliverance, hurricane, To Be Or Not To Be, GRS etc.
Title: The Peak Bouldering Guide is OUT!
Post by: dave on February 10, 2005, 01:34:25 pm
yeah stop of stumpfuckhole looks good, but is it a full dyno, is the bottom hand off? probably?. same whit spraymane, i get the feeling the bottom hand might be on still. dunno wether you could give it best though, i mean the landing must detract from it a bit. we must have a go at it though.

surely these aren't true dynos either though? isn't to be or not to be in fact more of a dyno?

the stump hole thing must be a contender. can't think of others.
Title: The Peak Bouldering Guide is OUT!
Post by: dave on February 10, 2005, 01:43:41 pm
yeah true, bottom hand is probably still on with pooh, plus can be done static - scratch that then. the other two well its dodgy ground i know, but at least both hands come off - hurricane/GRS/sly stallone are just big slaps though. As i said i think its a struggle finding 10 non eliminate pure grit dynos in peak that are excellent.

Post by: Bonjoy on February 10, 2005, 01:50:22 pm
The one on Smoke ont' Watter wall is good but can be done static (at a harder grade, so not technically an eliminate I guess).
Ben's Wall can also be done static.

thats not what you told kim; you said one hand stayed in the break and you stood into it type dyno rather than all points off. hence why i question your patriotism. general.

int there summert about getting arete, putting right toe in pocket and going static but wi the normal holds, plus crimps maybe on the left? we tried that, seemd like it would work, with pointy boot and assuming you can get your finter out with your foot on top of it.

No need to use holds round the other side at all, Daves beta sounds on the money to me. Just body tension and a smidge of technique makes it staticable. Although it is harder than the dyno this way so really shows less technique rather than more in a big picture kind of way I suppose...

It's all essentially soup.
