You're probably right. It's a grey (not gay) area, there's a fair bit of crossover.

True. Plenty of stuff was even labled Hard Trance. Whatever it's a fucking tune......

The Daddy of all trance tracks -

Hardfloor Acperience 1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j5wycI_C0N8#)

I remember Bubs trying to mix this into some of his NOOM wax at my Everton road slum -  needed to 'tweek' my decks it's so slow.

shit, how could I forget AGE OF LOVE!!!??????! I got a CD single of this, a release with 11 defferent remixes - the whole CD hand a longer playing time than most albums. Every version was great.

The Age Of Love (Jam & Spoon mix) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MT9pH9C7Oew#)

Also some obscure trance/HH tracks for the collector:
astralia - mandala
epedemic - exit eee
man with no name - vavoom
Mantra To The Buddha - Baby Doc & The Dentist
Baloney - Lectrolux

You can't put Tony De Vit in a trance thread, house - cheese or hard house maybe. I remember going to see him in like '93 and it has to be one of the worst sets I've ever seen.

Tinrib stuff was/is ok as is the Tidy stuff (Glazby/BK etc etc). There used to be a great night called Synergy in the Phoenix in Manchester, where they played all the time. This was all hard house/hard trance/hard style.

The god of trance is Sven Vath (not Paul van Dyk or Tiesto like punters believe) and for me that is where trance started. The best trance years were '94 to about 2001/2 in my opinion. Euro Labels like Eye-q, Harthouse, noom, suck-me-plasma and bonsai were churning out classics every week...

This was one of my trance faves on harthouse, I wasn't a real big fan of Hardfloor (as they were more minimal techno, which I do like but I prefer trance for the melodies)

Resistance D - Airwalker (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NmKcJFPK8Ck#)

I remember seeing Astralasia (http://www.astralasia.co.uk/) at the Arches a good few years ago, t'was a great night

ASTRALASIA - DURGA 1998 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cEXCHlgZ0KM#)

Eat Static and more generally the Megadog events were always guarenteed to be great nights.  Vague recollections of a blinding Megadog night at the old Corporation  :bounce:

Yeah - the megadog nights were awesome, got some good memories from them. Pretty sure I saw Billy Nasty at a megadog night, although could be wrong, the clubbing days were a bit of a blur  ;D

I never really got into psy-trance to be honest, I went towards hard-trance and hardstyle, although this one from Yahel has to be one of the best trance melodies ever:

Yeah - I have that one too, some great tunes. As Fiend said above, the Reactivate compilations were really good (10 being the best). I bought 3 copies of that LP as I kept wearing it out on my decks :)

Another amazing compilation series was Trancemaster on the German label Vision Sound Carriers (http://www.discogs.com/label/Vision+Soundcarriers). They are still going today too...

Trancemaster's 10 - 20 ish were the best.

Fuck yeah - Dave. The Transcend track off that is awesome!! All the reactivates were superb, not quite sure about 17 though. It put me off so I have never listened to 18. Not sure if they did any more after that?
It's a shame that you can't get decent trance any more. I read an article a while back where Paul Van Dyk said that something like 95% of all modern trance is shite and it's difficult to find good tunes.. completely agree.
Title: Re: The trance thread
Post by: dave on January 21, 2010, 11:41:13 am
yeah that 13 one if full of premium grade bangers. binary finary 1998 for fucks sake - what a record. olmec heads - lift off - awesome. Another good and a bit more varied series were those react test samplers, I have got quite a few of those.

Reminded me of another few good tracks - moonman "don't be afraid", three drives "greece 2000" etc etc.

The reason I kinda drifted away from trance/HH was it just got a bit too popular/mainstream and charty around the turn of the century, everything got shit. Even tidytrax started putting out gash records, then tinrib folded and I lost interest in cherrypicking the odd track off the odd complitation. Realised that I had a far better time listing to shit from '95 like the original Carl Cox - The Fact compliation, thats fucking monumnetal.
Title: Re: The trance thread
Post by: Tris on January 21, 2010, 11:49:43 am
Feckin too right, I have been trying to get hold of the mixed version of the FACT album, I can only find the unmixed tracks, which I have already.

I went to see Carl Cox in Lakota in Bristol just when FACT came out. He was supposed to be playing a 4 hour set - 12-4am. He got to 4 and the place was rocking so much, he played another 4 hours till 8am. Absolute fucking legend, easily the best night clubbing I've ever had. I couldn't walk for a week afterwards, my legs were fecked from dancing like a loon.  ;D
The high strength speed may have had a small part to play in that

Another compilation series from the UK that was great was the secret life of trance on Rising High Records.

We had some great trance being produced in the UK back then. The clubbing scene was amazing! The good old days...

Did anyone go to the universe tribal gathering events - they were incredible?

Any chance of an upload? I am getting my mate to send me a copy of his techno mix on the Fantazia label (http://www.fantazia.org.uk/albums/FADJ1.htm). I can do a trade if you liked this kind of stuff? It's a blend of techno/hard trance and goes towards his old skool hardcore style  at the end? You know the stuff he used to play...

I didn't like the style he went after the FACT album - he was a rave legend and he kind of lost the plot after that in my opinion. Weird minimal housey/techno stuff.

Actually Dave - I have found a link where you can download all of his albums. Click here (http://www.taringa.net/posts/musica/2829033/Carl-Cox---Collection.html) if anybody wants any Carl Cox..

The fantazia one is a bit of a weird one to be honest, lots of different styles from hard trance to techno to hardcore. Shouldn't be called techno mix really. Some great tunes and there is some incredible mixing too..I will upload it once I get it, I can't find it anywhere to download on the net. It's reminded me of a cool techno track on it, I'll post it in the techno thread actually.

If you do download anything, the password for the files is www.bajateloz.com (http://www.bajateloz.com). The fecking FACT one is mixed but then split into individual tracks, what's the fucking point? I've to got to piss around joining them all up now  :wall:

I liked Matt Darey when he was under his Li Kwan guise, Point Zero was a quality track on Reactivate 10. Also on that album (the whole album is absolutely class, every single track was amazing) was this. My fave from it:

Tris - I think Paul van Dyk is a douche. Most of his new music is terrible. There is some good modern trance.
Download "Trance around the world" number 196 :goodidea: . It's immense. It was the above and beyond essential mix from 2004, and it won essential mix of the year. I have played it a number of times at parties and people love it.

But like all genres if you dig deep enough (and in the case of trance:  really fucking deep) you can find some gold.    Chymera, from EIRE is doing OK.  Bit on the gay side tho, but it's progressive music ffs - what did you expect?

I agree his later stuff is pants. I did quite like his Vorsprung Dyk Technik album. He has also had a few good sets, there was a good one at Amnesia.
Cheers for the link Tom - I do like Above and Beyond, they've done some great remixes. The only modern 'trance' I actually listen to regularly is funky vocal trance. Stuff like Randall Spaulding/Project C/Gabriel & Dresden etc.. You can download all their mixes for free at http://forums.generationtrance.com (http://forums.generationtrance.com). I only tend to get the mixes which have a funky progressive feel though, not mainstream stuff that you hear in the charts.

I don't really like any of the modern hard trance either, it's just shite - no thought goes into the music composition. Just seems to be speeded up versions of regular tracks. That's why I shifted to hardstyle - stuff like Blutonium Boy/Donkey Rollers/DJ Luna etc... it has a better stomping beat and relates better to the older hard trance.

Did you go clubbing "Back int day" then?
Trance in night clubs now is generally gash. There is usually loads of wankers there and they play crap trance. Have been to a few good things though, Sander Van Doorn plays really good live sets, as do Menno De Jong and Above & Beyond.
Psytrance is always good for a night out though, usually loads of really friendly people, you can usually just chat to anyone and do pretty much whatever you want.

I have heard this tune quite alot recently, maybe not strictly trance it is still good:

My best years were at Uni in Cardiff around '94 when I studied really hard got trashed every night of the week and partied.
Music back then was in a different league. You are right - trance is shit now. It's just regurgitated old tunes or mindless crap that someone has spent an hour or 2 throwing together..

What about you - did you go clubbing back then?
Title: Re: The trance thread

Alas, I am merely 21. So no.
Go clubbing now though, haven't been in a while. The climbing works christmas party was the last time. It was all techno. I do love going out to techno, but can't really listen to it when i'm sat at home working or something. Before that went to see A&B, and before that was Glade. Once I have done my dissertation I'm going to party like it's 1994. :dance1:

Just looking for something good to go to. I imagine it will be Planet Zogg.

Not sure if you have heard of him but Mat Zo (http://www.myspace.com/matzomusic) is awesome, really digging him at present.

For prog just buy any Renaissance by Dave Seaman, Hernan Cattaneo, Zabiela. Awesome. Also love 16 Bit Lolitas, Matt Rowan and Jaytech. All wicked.

I heard that those first 3 gatecrasher album's are really good?

Mat Zo is currently my hero I am currently loving "Near the end", although I love the majority of his music. A Zo classic is Lucky Strike which is well worth checking out.
On the progressive front I can strongly recommend 16bit lolitas they did a cd called "Warung Brazil presents 16 bit lolitas" which you can get on spotify. Paul Keeley is also very good - One of my favourite of his tunes is Paper Jet (Bart Van Wissen remix).

I might try and upload a mix I made. Some of the EQing isn't great, but it was my first attempt at recording it. The track list is:
1 Reverse – Absolute Reality (Arty Remix)
2 Skytech – Comet
3 Jer Martin – Ten minutes to midnight (7 Skies Remix)
4 Signal Runners – Meet me in Montauk
5 Oliver Smith – Nimbus
6 Nitromethane – Time to die (Seraque Remix)
7 Mat Zo – Nuclear Fusion
8 Adam White & Andy Moor – The white room (Myon and Shane 54 Refill)
9 Mike Shiver and Aruna – Everywhere you are (Mike Shiver’s Catching sun remix)
10 Maor Levi – Shapes (Oliver Smith Remix)
11 Oliver Smith – Tomahawk
12 Gaia – Tuvan ( Gareth Emery Remix)

Love this thread, takes me back.... :dance1:

I started clubbing in 98 and went out pretty much every   weekend for the next 3 years

When i started it was all trance then the music went proggy and now fuck knows but your all right, it's no the same anymore...in fact trance and progressive are somewhat dirty words now...

Check this clip out of Sublime frae Edinburgh, the best ever club I ever went to.  Got the shivers when I first saw this clip last year, takes me right back:

I can't get away with "new" trance. Stuff like Above & Beyond, Garet Emery etc. For me trance evokes memories of a great time in my life, and as I have got older I have not embraced the new offerings. I do like Matt Zo stuff, as it is mainly played at prog house speeds!!

I posted this on my Farcebook the other day, the name popped into my head for some reason and I remembered what a belting tune it is!

Right then folks, hope the overlords don't mind me promoting this little gig a tiny bit on this thread, but for anyone in the North Lakes area for the Easter break this event is not to be missed! £5 a ticket, trance prog, tech-house, techno, house, licensed bar, what more is there to want? The footage on the clip is from over 10 years ago, hence the slightly questionable quality! (I am the guy with red hair and a gurn on at 0.14s :-[ ) Oh yeah, I forgot to mention.......

WE HAVE A FUNKTION 1 SOUND SYSTEM!

Its gonna be a great night, I'm playing first from 6-7 then a host of other home grown talents will take us through until 2am. Be good to see you there.

Funny you should mention Matt Hardwick. The lads who organise the event I mentioned managed somehow to get him to play at one of the gigs. I'm still not sure how to this day. A Gatecrasher resident playing to about 200 folk in a village hall just outside Keswick. Mental!

Bet that night was quality, small unusual venues are sometimes great as you can lose yourself within the music more easily.
Hardwick,Bond & Jules rocked as residents back then. Great music, fantastic people and many magical moments were had within those four walls.
Last year emailed Jules (was well bored) and told him about the route 'Judge Jules' over at the Roaches. He was really interested on how the climbing scene works.
Used to love Above & Beyond but over the last two years what they play doesn't really do much for me. The only dj/producer from back then who has still stayed true to the sound back then whilst still pushing the current scene is Solarstone. His podcasts are worth a listen.
One of his newest offerings.

By far the best imo. It's all about an intimate environment where the DJ isn't massively separated from everyone else. Can't believe Judge Jules actually responded to an E-Mail. I need a couple of tunes ID'ing (that he has played) as it happens...

And while im here:

Mega-uplifting old skool hard trance from Mark EG. Bad sound quality, bad mc, kinda cheesy, but buzz your fucking tits off :D

For those who enjoyed trance from the late 90's into the early 00's, this will be right up your street.

Mixed by a very old friend of mine, its 3 hours of mega trance.

Wasn't quite sure where to post this but it's got hypnotic keyboards, uplifting pianos, and a generally euphoric vibe, so it must be trance. And I fucking love it:
