In Lager's case it comes from the French "ouate" meaning "padding".

"Wither and Die", so you 'wad' someone to either wish to make them fatter (see above), or you wish them ill. Whereas 'Punter' is in reference to those excellent fellows from Oxford and Cambridge mucking about in those funny boats with their long sticks. If you 'punt' someone it's to 'push them along', congratulate or wish them well.
