Emily Harrington has done Golden Gate in 21 hrs13 mins 51seconds.
Apparently 1hr delay after smacking her head too.
Reported in the Graun here:
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2020/nov/07/emily-harrington-free-climb-el-capitan-yosemite-first-woman
-
Lynn Hill freed the Nose in under 24 hours, so I don't think this is the first female free IAD. Unless there are additional caveats? The first on Golden Gate though and a really impressive achievement even before you consider the setbacks she had on the way.
-
Steph. Davis and Mayan Smith Gobat might also raise an eyebrow at that headline.
Impressive ascent none-the-less, there is a lot of climbing on that route.
-
Yeah quite that was careles. Thanks for the corrections.
Mods- can you remove the word ‘first’ from the title please?
-
More detail from Andrew Bisharat in Outside Magazine. (https://www.outsideonline.com/2418625/golden-gate-emily-harrington-el-capitan?utm_medium=social&utm_source=facebook&utm_campaign=facebookpost&fbclid=IwAR1QXffLyL2q0lLzqC5BBASczdfNK8SlThrZ7qsLOq6NthXn97eE6bI1yM4)
A whole can of worms opened here :
Harrington came up with a slick solution to climbing the Monster: she wore Alex Honnold’s climbing shoes over her own.
I might try it if it makes my footwork twice as good. Or is being in contact with a little bit of Honnold's sweat enough to turn us all into superhumans?

To: “Female El Cap in a day”???
-
Yes please Simon. It has the merit of being accurate.

Bransby took a trainer likewise. Did he not mention it in the interview?

Or simply add “Not the”

In less than a day, a woman has climbed El Cap more times than I have in my whole life.
I also see that several women have climbed 9b.
It feels like my male privilege is being eroded
-
I think when/if we reach the plint of people announcing 'firstmale ascents' we will be a lot closer to your male privelidge being eroded. Think you are good until the n

Thanks. I feel a lot better now I know that.

I imagine a couple of Isabelle Faus' things awaiting a first male ascent?

Took a while before the Nose got a FFMA

Reading it back I am amazed you could decipher my message through all the typos, sorry about that.

I don't think he did. In case of doubt it was intended tongue firmly in cheek!
The BBC have corrected their article now.
-
Do you think you could change the name again? "Emily Harrington climbs Golden Gate" might be appropriate. The current title could be said to give the impression that once one women has freed El Capitan in a day, no other ascents are notable which I feel contrasts poorly with the 15 pages or what ever talking about blokes climbing Hubble.
-
What sam said. It does seem a bit diminishing of Harringtons achievement as it stands.

Fixed that for you ...
... only joking! :spank:

A nice little article here by Andrew Bisharat.
Apparently the mis-reporting of Harrington’s ascent as the fists female in-a-day stemmed from an error in an Associated Press article; this article was then picked up by the BBC, Guardian and the rest without the error being noticed and corrected.

Why lazy journalism is bad for you..

Nice one Shark :clap2: You have changed the thread title from one which celebrates Emily H being able to climb GG in under 24hrs into one which celebrates her being able to climb it, period. An improvement?

Fuck it. Let's have a daily thread: "Emily Harrington gets out of bed". Go Emily! Crushed it!
-
Off-topic, but it really is mind-boggling what an achievement by Lynn Hill it was to free-climb the Nose in a day back in 1994. I went to Disney World in 1994, I'd like to think we were both as psyched as each other that year.
-
It's still up there with one of the most impressive climbing feats ever, regardless of gender.

Its an improvement on your original which wrote Lynn Hill out of the history books

The news is that Harrington has done it in a day. Only Honnold, Coldwell and Gobright have done it before and loads of others have failed, Jordan Cannon, the young bloke from that Free as Can Be film, for example, didn’t do it last week despite having support from Honnold. It’s more than five years since Harrington first climbed the route. That’s not the news.
Mad how this thread is a combination of tutting at journalists for inaccurately titling their articles and indifference to how accurate the title of this thread about the same thing is.
-
In fairness to Shark he corrected the title to the one I suggested. I was obvs more bothered at addressing the general issue of the ignominious title than ensuring I suggested the perfect alternative one.

Just goes to show hard hard being a subeditor actually is.

Not really Shark, since I asked you to make an accurate change, and you declined, twice.
At least I only got it wrong once.

He’s done it now. (https://instagram.com/stories/cannonjtc/2444205984282715026?utm_source=ig_story_item_share&igshid=sxowfp9j1fax)
