Unimaginably shit.

It says something about the country I live in that the headlines are about a few missing middle class Australian tourists being talked about on twatter... the level of parochialism here now is a disgrace.

Terrible news

You're not alone in that.
At least the BBC coverage ranks the climbing/Avalanche after the more than 1100 confirmed dead elsewhere.
They do however leave the "virtually flattened" Sherpa villages, further down the valley; to a minor point near the bottom of the page.
Possibly due to lack of Sat Coms outside of the Expedition community.
But.
What a bloody awful tragedy for all involved.

Always amazes me whenever there is some international disaster generally a day after the main news breaks the BBC always has a headline of "X number of Brits confirmed dead in ZZZZZZZ tragedy" as if to say "listen up, sadly it's not just toothless slanteyed disposable foreign types that have died, but proper people too, people you should be bothered about".
-
They don't wait for the day after here, in many branches of the media it is the only story. Australian journalism is now so cheap and debased it is effectively just reporting what they see on Twitter. But this really should be the subject of a different thread so I will get out now.

It's not just a British thing. I have spoken to 50+ journos since Saturday morning, including Irish, Australian and US all wanting to know firstly, whether you have anyone of their nationality travelling with you.
Nepal is in a very, very bad way and we're only just beginning to hear about the level of devastation away from the big areas of population.
Anyway, as there's a thread and as I'm a regular use of this forum, you might want to donate to one of these appeals:

It's not just the people, BBC News Channel had a 15 minute segment about all the lovely buildings that had fallen down......

Sherpa Adventure Gear have set up an appeal with money raised going to the Paldorje Sherpa Foundation and an assurance that all money raised goes directly to relief

Hows about popping a link at the top of the UKB front page?

People look at the front page. :???:
Tapatalk completely bypasses it and personally when on a browser I go straight to "Unread Posts".

Can I recommend donating to the Disasters Emergency Committee Nepal appeal at:
http://www.dec.org.uk/appeals/nepal-earthquake-appeal
DEC brings together 13 UK charities (Action Aid, Age International, British Red Cross, CAFOD, Care International, Christian Aid, Concern Worldwide, Islamic Relief, Oxfam, Plan UK, Save the Children, Tearfund and World Vision) and concentrates on major disasters such as this one in Nepal.

I also understand that the government will match the first £5m in public donations to the DEC.
-
Anyone know of the best way to donate to make sure donations are used effectively?
1. DEC
or
2. Smaller local group as mentioned above.
or
3. Just donate to either (or both).
-
Donate to the DEC.

think quite a few walls are doing this on Monday - certainly TCA in bristol and glasgow all entry fees on Monday are going to Doug Scott's charity Community Action Nepal.
-
The climbing community are coming together. A load of walls up and down the country are donating their entry fees today to help following the Nepal Earthquake. Others are climbing the height of Everest etc. Great to see walls come together to raise money.

Yeah, it's great to see people helping out and donating what they can. There's a truck load of sleeping bags, tarps and tents leaving Cumbria for Nepal this week and more collections planned. We had a huge base camp type tent gathering dust in the garage but decided it was more use to them than us. Every little helps.

I'll be taking part in this next Saturday to help raise funds. Looks like a fun day out (although we've doubled it to 20 routes to keep it challenging!) and you can guilt all your friends into contributing.

Alternatively, you can just donate though me ;)
