Title: Gentle suntraps West Yorkshire / Lancs?
Post by: Fiend on January 16, 2019, 03:23:13 pm
Need a quick hit en route to Manc area. Slabs 6A-6C, walls / aretes / grooves 6A-B. Frictiony and fiddly preferable to cranky. Needs to relatively warm / sheltered ideally. Have considered Widdop but too exposed and cold, Brownstones but too crimpy / cranky, etc. Ideas welcome thx :)

I would always recommend west vale if you haven't been. Best if you make up your own eliminates though.

Theres a shit load of 4's and 5's at Buckstones (nont Sarahs) which is south facing (N wind forecast?) but exposed. Its not super inspiring, but near the road and en-route.

En route from where?

I've really been enjoying Shipley Glen recently. It's crimpy and fiddly. Masses to go at sub-7A. Sandbags abound. Really sheltered but gets stacks of afternoon sun. It fits the Fiend criteria of being a little bit underloved as well. People pop in for the steep stuff and don't stay to get shut down by the "easier" walls.

En route from North of the Wall.

Yeah thinking Shipley myself actually.

If you go then let me know. May be able to join you (I live a few mins drive away). As do Julie and Andy who I think you know.

I've known them for bloody years, but they're not talking to me any more the bloody fell-running wankers. Had some great days out with Hobby although the last one did involve a good sulkathon up / down Red Tape at Brimham....

P.S. What are the slabbier bits of Shipley? I've done Manson's Wall which was ace but too hard for me atm.
 Or any other slabby recommendations?

I’ve found Shipley hard to get to when en route on the M62 - unfortunately requiring going though Bradford or Leeds (or both) to get there. You can cut down from the A1 across towards Otley etc and the airport. But if you’re going that way there’s Caley....

Caley might be bleak as fuck for me atm.

I can't say there's many true slabs at the Glen, it's generally thin wall climbing.

Blackstone Edge, plenty to choose from there.

Or nearby Higher Chelburn. Nowhere near as much to do, but only a 12min walk in. Lots of little sitters in the 6's on decent rock, plus a couple of taller things (Clarion Call and Rockflection). A very minor venue, but fun for a quick hit. Also doesn't catch as much wind as Blackstone, so a useful fallback on a brisk day.

Very easy stuff but it was nice and I could keep my elbows steady.

Nice one Fiend - the second one in your video is now one of my favourite problems...surprised it doesn't get more of a mention in the guided as I think it's a real beaut of a grit problem.
