I'm doing a talk on the NIAD 1984 style for King's College London Mountaineering Club at 6pm on the 12th February. Non-KCL types are welcome.
I don't have many pictures from 1984 so there will a little padding out with 'road to the nose' stuff like Millstone, Verdon, and early ascents of Zodiac, PO Wall, and Astroman. I'll also do a bit about the 2014 version if there is time and interest.
Venue tbc, likely London Bridge, I'll update details here and on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/events/199823787032744/).
There will be lots of big hair.

Is that photo in the old blue Froggat guide? I'm sure I've seen it before......
-
Wow, Millstone has changed. Route?

Its not, I (very sadly) had it to hand and just checked!
I'd love to know what route. Anyone?

That's not sad. Maybe it was in On Peak Rock then.....

It's Regent Street, c.1979. Previously seen here (http://ukbouldering.com/board/index.php/topic,6644.msg233702.html#msg233702).
-
Ha, exactly the same thought six years later.
-
There will be lots of big hair.
Presumably only on the 1984 version?
I won't be able to attend but it sounds like a great talk

I could have sworn i knew it from a guide but I guess that's where I saw it and the hair stuck in my mind......

I've always wondered how different these crags look. As a kid, and as a youthful climber pondering guidebooks, I always remember these crags a being much more barren.
closest match I can get is

Can you film it?

I'm going to try and do something with "google hangouts", whatever that is, and it may be streamed or recorded.
-
Noooo! Don't use Google hangouts. No-one uses it and (at a total guess) it won't be open for non-users.

Just Periscope that shit yo.

If its recorded it goes onto youtube, and if not anyone with the link can access it.
-
@Fultonius, luckily the people who made Google Hangouts, also made a wonderful thing which means you no longer need to have a total guess....

Yeah, fair point. [/luzy cunt]

I'm only being defensive because i'm one of the people who recommended using it...

I'm only attacking 'cos I'm sick of my android phone constantly trying to force me to use certain google apps that I don't want. I should really make some time to root it and delete them all. That and not being able to rate apps without joining google+ [/resist]

What Dave said.
Sorry Duncan I have a gig tonight otherwise I'd be there.

Are you coming this evening?
-
Afraid not, watching Tame Impala at Ally Pally.
-
Better that Wild Impala on the Masai Mara?
-
No, but cheaper.
-
Something should happen here from 6pm: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7CQU8QH-Xi0
-
Will we be able to view this after the live feed?
-
Yep, will be on youtube for a few days i think
-
I want to know how it went? Who turned up with big hair? And when can I watch it?
Only the questions asked need to be answered.
-
The video is up but the sound has been muted by YouTube due to a copyright infringement claim as I used a short except from the Pat Garret and Billy The Kid soundtrack (streamed from YouTube...).
Fair enough I suppose. Ironically I was assuduous in only using photos with no copyright issues and crediting them.
I'd happily remove this section, it's only a couple of minutes, but no idea if this is feasible or not.
Clearly "periscoping the shit out of it" might have been the better option!
-
Hi Duncan. There are a number of options I think. If you have the video file on your computer you can edit it I think to play circa 30% slower/faster, such that it doesn't interfere noticeably with the playback, but YouTube's music recognition software fails to match the song it hears to the reference in its database. Alternatively if you have the vid file you could mute the short section with the song playing and try uploading that?
There's also something here which is probably the easiest fix:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h4RLoUmudkQ
If you're using the material as part of "fair use", which you probably are, you can dispute it and YouTube will unmute.

https://www.youtube.com/yt/copyright/fair-use.html
It would be great to watch the talk!
-
Just had a PM from Duncan. YouTube have accepted the fair use challenge and the video is now unmuted.
Duncan also mentioned that he would leave the vid public for a week or so, so get watching while it's up. Out of interest, Duncan, is there an impediment to keeping it up longer?
-
I'll watch it tonight
Whilst we're on the subject have YouTube not got the capability to say receive a video off fiend and just mute it automatically? Save everyone else the trouble
-
I use Vimeo you bellwart.
-
Enjoyed that, Duncan. Thanks for taking the trouble to make it available.
