When I was a kid, everyone seemed to know what they wanted to do, and it was usually what their dads had done. I want to be a doctor, or I want to be a teacher. I was no exception. When people asked me what I would be, I also had an answer.
Im going to be a crag rat.
It's finished. Jerry's story, from start to finish. From traversing on the back of a wall at school, to his first real climbs on Craig y Forwyn, to ruling Tremadog with Andy Pollitt, to owning Stoney, crushing the US and more and more and more and more. Climbers don't come much more inspirational than Jerry. Hats off to Jerry and Grimer - they've done a great job.
The book will be out in the last week in January. Signed copies are available direct from Vertebrate.

Theres only 3 people who could write a book like that.

Link to "Preorder" gives a 404 :P
-
I could get to the credit card details page. :-\
-
hmmm. seems to be working fine. is it a work-computer beef?
-
the main picture link for me doesn't work, directs to:
http://www.v-outdoor.co.uk/products/climbing_mountaineering/jerry_moffatt_revelations.php (http://www.v-outdoor.co.uk/products/climbing_mountaineering/jerry_moffatt_revelations.php)
which appears to be non-plus.
-

My mistake I'd hovered over the book and noticed the alt="Preorder" text appear and clicked on that which led to the 404 (at the URL dave lists). Clicking on the Preorder text below works though (apologies for the confusion).
Will that pre-order automagically be signed?
-

Me, myself and Grimer
-
Can we order 25 signed copies please ;D
-

go on then. :)
-
our web fella should be sorting that link problem before he buggers off on holiday.
-
The perfect cover. Jerry topless, lycra, lasers, gritstone and not a pad in sight!
-
Hi John,
Give me a call at the shop and i'll give you an order too (signed of course).
Cheers. Jez.
-
YYFY.

I bumped into Grimer at Tesco's on Saturday. He said not to bother buying this book as he had to make most of it up coz Jerry didn't have much to say.
DID HE BOLLOCKS!
Sounded like it was a good use of Jerry's mouth and Grimer's fingers (J talking; G writing).
Should be a cracking good read
-
Surely the title should be: Jerry Moffatt - Ulysses
-
That title might lead to some confusion between literary heavyweights.
There would be Ulysses, the all-time classic 'stream of conciousness' book, penned by a surreal Irishman who walked the fine line between genius and incomprehensible.
And then you'd also have Joyce's nonsense, with the same name.
-
Indeed, Simon. But as Molly would have said, Don't forget to bring my Bloomin quickdraws back with you!
:)
-
I've left them hanging on the Christmas tree outside Bristol Town Hall. Yours are the ones with the Wild Country wires on.
-
Just ordered this carnt wait!! Any one thought of doing one of mr haston that would be interesting dave
-

!
nothing to see here, move along
-
Privileged position that i am in i've just read the pre print manuscript - it is superb - a true insight into a top performing athlete, as well as a 'one of us' tale about what is like to go climbing.... The book is an inspiration as well as a great story.
-
Hang on a bloody minute! jomjon? As in jon? As in Jon Barton of Vertebrate Graphics, the publisher? Well you would say that it was good, wouldn't you.
-
it's ok grimer. i think it's rubbish, which sort of balances the whole thing out.
you should read it by the way. it's great. i cut all that bollocks about the states, germany, france and replaced it with some stuff about the profound effect finally meeting cofe had on him, written in the 4th person tence.
-
right then - i'm off back to UKC. Now where's my harness...I'll leave my sense of humour here.
-
you should bring out 2 books, one called "jerry", the other one called "moffatt", people could buy both, read them, then just read the best one. check em out, direct comparison.

It looks as if The Man Himself will be doing a magic lantern presentation at the Works on Sunday 22nd Feb. I might even buy a ticket myself.

Shame. I was thinking more........

anyone else preordered today?

anyone else preordered today?
:agree: well actually a few weeks back. Can't wait to get my mits on it and start reading.
-
Does anyone remember the old article (not sure which mag, High?) that Jerry wrote about doing Rage De Vivre and Minimum? Every time we walked up to Bout De Monde it was obligatory for someone to shout "I hate this walk" in a squeaky voice.
-

Can't believe he hasn't beat me to it. This has been rearranged. It's now on Sunday 8th Feb. I'm sure the G-dogg will follow with more details.
This is currently Jerry's only major slideshow/talk in Sheffield. He will also be appearing at SHAFF though on Saturday 28 Feb (http://www.shaff.co.uk/films/#letterJ).

I was too busy awarding Jon a wad point ;D
8.15pm on Sunday 8th Feb. So stock up on your helium and lose those razors.
Haven't sorted ticket prices yet but expect them to be around a tenner. We will be hiring in some heaters as well - got one to try out for Gaz's talk this Sunday.
As ever we will have one of our fabulous "everyone's a winner" raffle. Just have to work out what kind of beer everyone will win.
-
anyone else preordered today?
:agree: I have mine ordered. The first non-guide-climbing-book I have bought since .... since ...... that dodgy patrick edlinger glossy from a bargain basement bucket...

Hi everyone,
Just to let you know that Jerrry will be giving a lecture and a reading from his new book at the Sheffield Adventure Film Festival, which runs from February 27 to March 1.
ShAFF is a massive event, this is it's 4th year and it's going to be bigger and better than ever: there will be tons of showings of amazing adventure films at the Showroom in Sheffield plus loads of cool lectures and fun fringe events.
Jerry will be selling and signing copies of the book after his lecture / reading which starts at 12.45pm on Saturday 28th Feb. He will also be around later in the evening of the 28th Feb to introduce Chris Sharma to the stage for his lecture at 7pm.
You can get tickets at www.shaff.co.uk (http://www.shaff.co.uk) ...

If anyone would like to read an excerpt from Jerry's book, an edited section from the Master's Wall chapter is now live on UKC (http://www.ukclimbing.com/articles/page.php?id=1574).

Student Loans have arrived! I know what I'm ordering later... :bounce:
-
Jerry's book (http://www.v-outdoor.co.uk/products/climbing_mountaineering/jerry_moffatt_revelations_signed_copies.php) is finally here! It looks great (I would say that), but it really is Jerry's story that it's all about and Grimer has done an incredible job in putting it down in words.
We've been cracking the whip this afternoon....

Mine was on the floor yesterday lunchtime. The postie knew I wanted it that day as he REALLY forced it through the letter box as the draft-excluder is now fooked - nice one Jerry >:(

Eddies & Mini. Come on now, lets not blame Jerry!!, Jerry!!, Jerry!!, Jerry!! for your inadequately sized boxes. Mine (and plenty other people's) is more than adequate to receive 6 inches of hard-backed Jerry!! ;)
-

No I am planning on relaying the book to an audience through interpretive mime. Whilst in a glass box. And walking into a strong wind.
(If you shoot a mime, should you use a silencer?).

Mine was waiting when I got home today :great:
Cofe and Jon - Really nice work with high quality binding, paper and production.

-
finished it today, brilliant book from climbers perspective, it just shows if your super focussed and determined you can reach the top, some great stories re ben m & johnny d
-
was enviously reading all the comments and wondering where my copy had got to.....
then neighbour just came round and said postman had stuck it through her door instead...kindly woman asked what it was and so i tried, after a few glasses of wine, to explain jerry 'the ledge' moffat...
she listened then, gave me one of those looks that says 'don't understand, but obviously means something to you' and left...
but hey, topped up glass and settling down with book.
cheers
:beer2:
-
She knows ;)
A closet cranker back in her day for sure
-
Got mine on thursday. About half way through and its awesome man! Jerrys a legend- good effort to jerry and grimer.
-
Picked up a signed copy from Cotswold's in Liverpool yesterday(thank's Si), read it cover to cover. Went to bed, got up, started reading it again. It should be subtitled 'How to get 110% psyched to pull your very hardest'. Brilliant :great:
-

brill...i havent got the challenge plus 1 channel...
have u got sky or vm? dont know if sky provide challenge as i dont have sky
not climbing today....too cold brrrrr
-
Ah, so great you all enjoyed it, and thanks for saying :)
I found the story mega motivating, a real inspiring character.
Was round at Vertebrate the other day and Jerry was getting his slideshow for the works ready. He had a little bit of footage of him and Ben training in his cellar. The bit on the speedball is hilarious.
-
got sky plus mate. off broughton today i think around 12
-
excellent...can u do me copy? be good to watch!
got another gut busting lunch today. not gonna get chance to climb till tuesday :furious:
-
I saw the Ape Index lecture years ago and now after reading this my love for Jerry will be forever intact. What a guy. I can't believe everyones been spelling Liquid AMBAR wrong for all these years though!
-
excellent...can u do me copy? be good to watch!
not sure i can to be honest mate. only device i think you can get data of the sky plus box is a video and that is currently in a state of disrepair. Unless anyone else has any info?
watched it yesterday, proper cheesy. how old/ into his climbing career was jerry then when he did you bet?
Found it hilarious when he was deliberately puffing and panting and looking back with mock nervousness before he started on the roof.
got another gut busting lunch today. not gonna get chance to climb till tuesday :furious:
Gut busting lunches? doesnt sound idea.
you at the temple tuesday?
Tim

Got my copy Saturday AM... only ordered on Thursday! AND signed! How good is that?
The book is (of course) genius and provides a perfect centrepeice to my 'Jerryshrine'
Thank you to everyone involved :great: :great:
-
I am now super psyched. I shall become Moffatt reincarnate.
Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to train my back two.
-
Managed to pick my signed copy up from Cotswold Liverpool last night. Up to page 41 before bed and it's been nothing but a joy so far. Really slick cofe thankyou.
-
Went for the cheap(er) option of non-signed from Amazon. Unfortunately this just went drastically wrong and the expected delivery of the 16th is now apparently the beginning of March. Gutted. :'(
-
Looks like he's doing a london date on the 24th. Unfortunatly its at the castle.
Arse to get to in the friday rush hour!
-
a bit of trumpet blowing, but Jerry's book has been shortlisted for the Boardman Tasker Award (http://www.boardmantasker.com/site/shortlist2009.htm) this year. Needless to say we're stoked a bunch.
-
Props word. Looks to me like it will be between Moffatt and House.
-
i didn't think we'd shortlist so i'm very pleased. i think the cairngorm john book could do it. we'll see. i'll be up there raiding the buffet regardless.

Bump>
There's a review of the book in the current issue of quality (but free) French climbing mag EscaladeMag
Final paragraph roughly translates as
"Reading this book delivers you from morosity, it is to be put in everyone's hands, from beginners to champions. One sole regret, there is not yet a french translation."
Try this (http://www.wobook.com/WBXL5mk2iK5g/EscaladeMag-27.html) and flick to p30
But be nice - the magazine's editor is a certain Laurence Guyon-Haston>
-
Good spot. No french, german or US translations yet. Although italian speakers are in luck.
-
There is no doubt of Moffat's genius, speeding his way up every challenge, though his training methods are somewhat under reported. Where they real-vealed in Grimer's novel?
-
I hear Grimer is off out to Banff, armed with a speech and a taste for champagne

Simple answer to that, buy the book and read it! ::)

Resurrecting a very dead thread here, but I think it's worth it because ...
The German title of Jerry's book is "Rockgod". Really (https://www.amazon.de/Rockgod-Das-Leben-einer-Kletterlegende/dp/3936740836/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1506454746&sr=8-1&keywords=rockgod).
I wasn't looking for it, it was in a banner ad bergsteigen.com where I was in search of a topo for this week's planned entertainment. I looked at it & thought surely not. But surely yes.
-
Me n Jerry were in Arco in Italy one time, just after the Italian edition had come out.
The publishers came to dinner with us and proudly displayed the new edition. It was called Il Toppo di Falaise.
The guy held the book up.
"Toppo di Falaise"? we asked.
"Si," he said. "How you say-a - Crag-a Rat."
Jerry didn't seem overly impressed.
"No, no. Not crag-a Rat," he carried on. Crag-a Mouse!"
Later I was talking to Giovani, who translated it into Italian.
"How was it?" I asked him.
"It was ok. But some bits are - how you say - a bit boring, so i make them better."
I looked forlornly at my spaghetti.
-
Are you quite sure Giovani didn't subcontract the work to a certain other Italian translator of climbing biographies not unknown in these parts?

Because certain other Italian translators do not have the paranoia of making the original book better...
