Title: Recycling camping gas canisters.
Post by: mrjonathanr on August 16, 2021, 09:21:26 am
Having previously mostly used meths for cooking, I now need to recycle some propane/butane canisters. What do people generally do? Puncture with a screwdriver and let the last gas escape before recycling? Thanks!

Yeah, leave valve open to make sure all gas is out and then punch a few holes. You can get proprietary kit for the job if you want to!

Thanks teestub. I’d seen that tool, might be worth buying rather than stabbing my hand with a wonky screwdriver.

One thing puzzling me is that my Coleman cartridge is definitely not empty, approx 15% full, yet no more gas is escaping. Have you had similar issue? Maybe a dodgy canister? Primus ones are okay.

Deffo had canisters where it sounds like there’s still gas swishing around in them but they become useless for cooking as there’s no pressure left, but not sure I’ve had one as you describe, knackered valve?

Maybe, thanks for your suggestions. If ‘house explodes in Stockport, gas canister suspected’ hits the news, you’ll know it’s fuller than I thought.

Dangerous...but....would be better for the environment to burn it somehow! Butane/propane being significantly worse that co2.

Not that it would make a hoot of difference in the grande scheme...

I had wondered about the feasibility of biogas canisters, but I think methane is no use from my last bit of research.

I didn’t think either butane or propane were GHGs?
