Title: Teeth
Post by: shark on July 12, 2021, 10:41:41 am
Over the last couple of years my teeth have started falling out. I had 3 back teeth come out and the dentist was recommending implants but at £2/3k a tooth I didn’t bother and managed fine without.

Last weekend a crown (molar) came out. The dentist has tried twice to cement it back in but it’s come out again. He’s suggesting a single denture which is £288 on the nhs and you take it out at night or an implant. Again I’m inclined to do nothing as I’m fine chewing food without it.

Interested in other views. I gather that it’s popular to get an implant or a whole set of implants in Hungary relatively cheaply. Tempted to do that when enough have fallen out that it becomes an issue chewing.

I broke one of my front teeth when I was about 11. I had it capped, a few years later it became infected and I had to have removed. I had a single denture for a bit before have a bridge fitted, this involves grinding down the teeth at either side capping them with a false tooth in the middle.
This a fairly common procedure but it does seem to common practice to inform you that it will eventually knacker the teeth that are capped.
Which happed in my case they became loose and infected and I had to go back to a bigger denture which was grim.
So I ended up getting implants which were eye wateringly expensive however it has made eating much better and I can eat apples and French bread without wondering where my denture was going to end up.

Thanks Webbo - yes he’d mentioned a bridge but that he didn’t recommend it.

I smashed two front teeth in a bike accident when I was 14 and had them capped. I'm now on my second lot of caps in 34 years (had them replaced maybe a decade ago) and it's all fine so far.

I don’t think it’s the capping that’s the problem I think it the effect of the bridge on the capped teeth. I think it took about 40 years to go wrong.

I too lost front teeth in a bike accident as a teenager, had them capped and then had another bike accident 6 weeks later knocking them out again! Those crowns have lasted me since, but I expect i'll need to spend more money sooner or later.

Regarding surgery abroad, I have done this and had a non-dental surgery (i'd rather not go into specifics) under general anaesthesia in Poland. No surgery is a pleasant experience but it was at least as good as it would have been in the UK, and cost only 1/4 the price with flights and accommodation included.

Blimey - looks like I got lucky as a kid.

Son 2 has just got a new mtb and is getting adventurous.. might have to look at a full face helmet this weekend!.

Following this thread with interest as my teeth are starting to break all too regularly..  pork crackling is a thing of the past for me.

I had my first tooth out on Friday.
I go to the Charles Clifford teaching hospital in Sheffield.

It became a bit of an epic extracting it - tooth kept fracturing - and I sort of wished I'd not bothered, but I'd been told it wasn't a case of if the dead tooth became a problem, but when.
Gum is still sore this a.m. Probably my fault. I'd been told not to exercise, to assist healing..

Really interesting to hear about the surgery options overseas, though not worth bothering with at the moment.

Bridge didn't sound good - due to likelihood of damage to the other teeth. I'd damaged the tooth I had removed, and didn't speak to anyone about the "wobbly bit" until I realised food was getting trapped.

We could all hire a bus and go on an old farts trip to Poland together.

Absolutely! It's only a matter of time until they get dumped on their head, unfortunately. Look into MIPS technology or similar too. People will argue over it's necessity, but there's evidence it reduces rotational forces upon impact and therefore concussions, so it's worth paying a few quid more for.

You goes abroad, you takes your chances. I would say due diligence and governance is lacking in some European countries. Seem some terrible iatrogenic injuries caused in people gong this route.

+1 to above.
I work at a very good dental/implant clinic and we've had to sort out the messes caused by cheap overseas dental implant providers several times. Worst one we had was a chap who had had implants in Bulgaria, they had gone straight into the nerve and he had facial paralysis for the rest of his life.... The other big issue is that it's a pain in the backside if you have any complications with the treatment - it's a right faff having to fly to another country every time you need an appointment. Probably costs more in the long run.

If it's a pain in the backside from dental work, something must have gone seriously wrong! :)

Years ago a guy I used to know got his eyes lasered on the cheap as part of a trip to (I think) Colombia. Seemed to go OK but he said it was a bit of a scary experience and his eyes were held open by what seemed to be wooden toothpicks.

A minor point but having certain operations abroad rules you out of being able to give blood.

Thread resurrection!
Interested in people's knowledge/experience of dental implants.
My NHS dentist has recommended that I have a decaying/breaking tooth extracted and replaced with an implant. The implant would be private and cost around £2000  :'(. Apparently not having the gap filled with an implant runs the risk of teeth shifting and causing more problems, but I know several folk that haven't had such issues years after extractions. I'd rather not shell out all that money if its not really worth it.

Top left, 2nd molar from the front. Or 3rd molar from the back...

I had to have a tooth removed due to it being too rotten / infected for a root canal. It was a dirty great big molar (lower jaw, 3rd from back, so 1st molar).

I was recommended at the time to consider getting an implant due to risk of other teeth shifting and causing issues, but chose instead to leave it be and see how it went.

3 years later and so far so good, other teeth have not shifted and no signs of uneven wear. Also as it’s a molar it not really cosmetically significant.

So from my experience, bearing in mind sample group of 1, plus I’m-not-a-dentist, I’d be tempted to see how it goes. Have regular check ups and it looks to be becoming an issue, then worry about it then.

Also as an aside, if your going to get an infected cavity in a molar, don’t do it on Christmas Eve, by the time the dentist reopens after new year, it will be so swollen and infected you’ll need and additional week of antibiotics before they can treat it, by which time it will be too far gone for a root canal.

I had my bottom two front teeth replaced with an implant over ten years ago. They were going to fall out eventually from the delayed effect of a smack in the mouth that I received when I was a lad. I went for the implant because they were in such a prominent position. The procedure was a bit of a faff, with a few visits to the dentist, but pain-free and trouble-free. From the perspective of someone who knows nothing about dentistry, it did seem pretty involved, and I'd think twice before getting someone to stick a titanium screw into my jaw on the cheap. Cosmetically, they are indistinguishable from the adjacent teeth and haven't given me any problems so far. They are, however, the third-most expensive thing I own and the resale prospects are not great.

Teeth

English Teeth, English Teeth!
Shining in the sun
A part of British heritage
Aye, each and every one.
English Teeth, Happy Teeth!
Always having fun
Clamping down on bits of fish
And sausages half done.
English Teeth! HEROES' Teeth!
Hear them click! and clack!
Let's sing a song of praise to them -
Three Cheers for the Brown Grey and Black.
(Spike Milligan)

Following with interest as I have no upper right molars and one of the upper left isn’t in great shape.

Already four down and cracked an upper molar in half on Tuesday when inadvertently biting hard on a pomegranate seed. Half removed on Wednesday and the remaining half bolstered but suspect it won’t last that long. Losing teeth makes me feel old  :'(

You don’t need to replace to stop shifting…that’s a sales line. Only need to do it if you don’t like the idea of a gap.

Did they tell you….you can have root canal therapy and a crown on the nhs for a 10th of the price…or have you already had that….

I've already had root canal therapy on it. It was on the follow-up visit (to fill the large hole?) that I was told it was best to remove and implant.
Thanks for the advice. Im starting to think the implant isn't really necessary. Not that I don't trust you Snoops, but d'you mind if I ask, are you a dentist?

Ah, grand. Thanks. Really useful.
Unsurprisingly, a quick Google search just comes up with dentists that perform implants saying how necessary they are!

The only answer it’s possible to give to a dentist when they ask you a question whilst checking your teeth 😄

I had a root canal on the same tooth, then one half fell off, then the other half, so it needed a crown, which cracked, so needed another crown, which came loose, was cemented back in, came loose again and I swallowed it (sounds a bit like a castle built on a swamp). Was told root was too cracked for another crown, so just had the lot out. Year later and I don't miss it, barely notice it, but do tend to chew more on the other side.

I had four molars out on the same day 4-5 years back. All rotten/needed removing (wisdom teeth crowding them out..). My dentist said "I can have a go myself - though I don't usually do them, or I can call in Mr Molar - he is £100 a tooth though".

Mr Molar (it turned out) was a dentist who specialised in molar removal. He was built like a prop forward - and after the requisite local anesthetics I sat down in his chair - and by pressing the tooth hard sideways near the base, he removed all four in approximately 20 seconds with no pain, tools or yanking of the head etc.. Incredible. I now have gaps in my molars but going fine.

It's not the 20 seconds of work, it's all the years that have gone into perfecting that 20 second performance.

Part of my tooth broke on Saturday- I have a number of molars that have massive fillings (most done when I was 19) in the middle of them. In recent years the remaining sidewall of tooth has broken away on some, necessitating a crown. This one’s probably going to need the same.

Anyway, I thought I was being good not going to the dentist during the pandemic (because I had no issues whatsoever) but it turns out they’ve dropped me as a patient as I haven’t been for more than two years  :'(.

Does anybody have any beta for getting in at an NHS dentist in Sheffield? All the waiting lists are 18 months or so so I’m looking at having to go fucking private.

There’s usually emergency options available at hospitals if it’s an issue that needs dealing with ASAP. Not sure what the deal is in Sheff but that’s the case in Leeds.

Not sure how many you tried, but when I had to get signed up with an NHS dentist a year or so ago I found a big list and just phoned around until I found one with availability. Took 20 or so calls but got there eventually, and there was quite a few places left to check in the list.
