Dunno if anyone has any knowledge, but I thought someone in the UKB collective might know... I'm on the hunt for some bilberry picking spots (not sure if the spelling is correct or whether it's different colloquially).
Does anyone know of any good bilberry areas in the peak where I might be able to find some?
I've heard there may be some round the roaches, but there must be some around the eastern edges too?

Blackamoor has some bilberry picking spots.

If I remember correctly the whole area around Stanton in the Moor is covered with them. I was there out of season, so didn't see any fruit, but a lot of plants. I'm thinking about the area near the stone circle. Unless my botany is on the blink.

A few reservoirs in particular around Holmfirth have loads.
Billberry, Digley & Holme Styes are the best.

Have you got yourself a berry comb? I just got one and it's transformed blaeberry picking. I stopped on the way into work this morning and in less than a minute had enough for a mid-morning snack.

A great spot is called Norway, the whole country is full of them, cant go anywhere without getting blue feet at the mo!
Can recommend freshly picked ones in honey wraps (from Molecule-R - on youtube) as a very easy but flash dessert!

We used to (by which I mean the 1980s) pick lots under the Skyline.

A couple of years ago I found bushes full of bilberries as big as grapes on the North West face of Tryfan... A most welcome treat during my descent

Are they really that hard to find? I seem to wade through acres of them every time I head up onto the moors.

Last time I went to windy clough (this time last year) there were loads of people picking them from the path up...

Exploring under Bamford Edge is the best I know....no easy paths so it keeps the walkers away.

Also, I'd never even heard of such a thing as a berry brush but it looks amazing!
I don't think they're hard to find generally, I just wanted some ideas on places to focus on looking for them rather than having a more random wander.

There's definitely a load around the Skyline still, Andy. That's generally been my first place, but wanted some idea about the eastern edges which I've spent less time around during summer.

Had a few near surprise view, also some crow berry's in the area. Neither taste as good as yew berries, but they're not really a moorland thing

Have to disagree, I like yew berries least out of those three. They are sweet but bland and the gelatinous texture, well they don't get called snot-berries for nothing. I do like the danger-food aspect though, i.e. the green pip in the middle is fatally poisonous if chewed!
I do rather rate crow berries (perhaps berries known as lingon berries by people who frequent IKEA). Basically they're small cranberries in all but name, so rather bitter sweet. Very good for making flavoured vodka with a brilliant pink colour
