Title: New Raven Tor Link
Post by: Three Nine on November 01, 2011, 06:15:38 pm
For anyone sad enough to care. Bob just did Cave Problem Sit into Baby Chimes at hard 8b. Its called 'Kneedless' after some berk broke his knee trying it on Sunday.

Heard that knee go all the way down the other end. That was a grim sound.

The knee is going much better than expected fortunately - I could walk to and from uni today. Gentle traversing starts again tomorrow!

Bob said you fucked it pretty badly. Good to hear you are capable of functioning. What did the hospital say?

A&E just x-rayed it, said that was ok from that point of view, prodded it a bit and sent me home without saying too much.
I'm well pleased with how quick it seems to be recovering though - basically full range of movement this morning, though I'll keep away from bouldering or hard moves a while longer I think. Going to experiment with some ARC this evening. Who knows, maybe a week or two of fingerboarding is just what I need to get me up mecca extension? (If it stays dry that long)
Should be fixed enough to bounce around at Sam and Gus's thing anyway  ;D

What did you actually do to it?

Heason did suggest it was comeuppance for trying to get more ticks by simply combining 2 things I've done all the established links and variations on already...

What did you actually do to it?

It made a horrible snapping, crunching sound. It's something to do with the ligament running down the outside of the knee, though from the rate of recovery I guess it's a lot less bad than it initially sounded...

As an aside, it's apparantly it's the same heel-toe Paul Reeve bust himself in - be warned!

Ooooh, heel-toe!  That's one I've got be careful of these days.  A&E told me mine was fine too. I  went back the next day and showed them exactly what was wrong with it, they still said it was fine.

X-Rays tell you f'all about knee problems. Even MRIs are a bit hit and miss. I would take what A&E tell you with with a Raven-Tor sized lump of rock salt!

Shit, didn't mean to sound so down - hopefully you've not done anything too serious, but keep an eye on it and if it feels at all unstable DEMAND to see a specialist ASAP!

What did you do to yours? Mine is ok for walking etc. now but a bit sore, especially walking up/down stairs. It should hopefully be getting a more expert opinion soon from UKBs finest anyway..

Dashboard crushed my legs in a car crash. Basically rammed my shin bone back under my thigh when it was bent at 90degrees. Snapped the Posterior Cruciate and the Popletiofibular Ligaments and badly strained the Lateral Colateral.

Would be surprised if you've done anything that nasty, but poping/crunching/swelling does sound like something soft has gone! (I.e. Cartilage/Meniscus or something ligament-ish.).

Aye, you're in a good place here - plenty of knowledgable (i.e. trained-knowledgeable, not just "unfortunately" knowledgable like me...) folks kicking around!

On the plus side, you can spend some time on the fingerboard and come back even more beastly!!   :strongbench:  <<< we need a fingerboarding emoticon!

I was spotting him when he did that, made a right noise, at first i thought he'd broke a hold off!

I did my knee in France, pulling on a heel/toe - sounded like a rifle shot. It was the ligament down the outside of the knee. It hurt a lot for a week, a bit after two and a little for a couple of months. Now it seems fine. I was 6 months before I'd trust a sideways heel, but I was back climbing in a couple of weeks after.

Same here. Heel hooking on Mira Hindley and bang, people thought it was a rope whacking against the rock, outside of knee felt bad for a few days then normal in a week. Strange one.

be careful with those knee's guys and allow plenty of repair time as its one of those joints that will cause you problems for the rest of your life if you dont do it right first time, and thats from ongoing experience after a rugby accident when i was 13.i shattered my knee cap and severed the patella tendon and tore most of the ligaments.i tried rushing back into things and didnt end up walking for the best part of 3 years and have niggling pain and problems 20 years on and its only likely to get worse  :'(

I would trust A/E about as far as I could throw it.The missues fell off some steps in Germany, the doc there said she'd snapped one of her cruciate ligaments possibly both.He sent a report and copies of the xrays but the guy at A/E reckoned it was a bit of cartilage damage. However the MRI scan strangely enough backed the guy in Germany.

x rays are for bones.
you aren't going to know much about tendons or ligaments from that. MR is the best imaging modality for that as far as i know
GCW would be the person who would know about this having been an orthopod.
the quality of A&E service is relative to what you've done. if you've got  a cold or are drunk then you'll seen by the junior doc who will most likely sort you out properly.
tendons are one of those challenging things that certainly i was pretty spac at when I worked in A&E, and depending upon what it was i'd bother the reg or the ortho on call.
or i'd give them an appt with the A&Eclinic the next day with a consultant

If it were me, i'd either go -during the day and explain what has happened to your knee to either your GP and asked to be referred to ortho, or during the day (there will be sensible people who know what they are doing around) go to A&E and suggest it might be giving way and could you see the consultant. (white lies never hurt anyone and may get you a scan)

GCW will know better than I.

It is a vile , repugnant, hideous heel toe on that problem. I will never use it again and it doesn't surprise me to hear of it taking prisoners
