Title: Site Sale
Post by: shark on February 10, 2010, 10:07:38 am
Bubba/Mike made public that he wanted to raise some cash by selling UKB and UK Caving a few weeks ago. Toby (tobyfk) and I took an interest as we have a business background, like UKB and have some time on our hands. From the start we wanted Mike to stay involved - he has agreed, which is great. Mike should be proud of UKB: he has let it develop a distinct character and community. As the new custodians we want to keep it that way, as well as make it commercially viable for the three of us. With a bit of thought hopefully the two aren't incompatible. We've got a few half-baked ideas but won't rush into anything and are open to suggestions.
Anyone who might want to advertise or whatever (on UKB or UKCaving) should contact me either PM'ing or by email:  http://scr.im/simonlee (http://scr.im/simonlee)  Meanwhile several people have said they'd like the UKChrisCragg's banner (Toby's work) on a UKB t- shirt.  If there is demand (email or pm me to reserve) we can get some printed up."

I wonder what Craggs would think about the Peak being full of those shirts

I'd buy another UKB hoodie/shirt, and maybe a Craggs one too.
So do you boys get the magic squares now?

:great: Keeping it in the family :)

Look forward to the evolution of the site.

I'd definitely buy t-shirts (possibly one of the current banner, although I can think of other previously suggested designs that I'd prefer).

I like the idea of a t-shirt that just reads "dire at every level"

Pretty much sums up my climbing right now too.

Good effort lads, thats great news - keep it in the family is right!!
On the t-shirt front I'd definitely buy another, and a hoodie - maybe one of the Chris Craggs ones but some of the other designs were ace too!

Glad it's being kept in the family, and good luck with your future endeavours Simon and Toby with making this viable for you.

"dire at every level"

Good one for a t-shirt as well I reckon.

Put me down for a Craggs shirt.

I'd just like to formally say welcome on board to Simon and Toby.

We've (obviously) been having a lot of discussion behind the scenes and I'm confident that they will do the right thing by UKB and that they appreciate what makes this place the number one online community for many of us.

It's also been a real financial bonus for me to lift me out of a bit of a current hole - funny how smashing my car up has led to all this!

Finally, I'd like to just say a huge huge thankyou to all your support over the years and for the dedication, good humour and loyalty to UKB that so many of you have shown - this place would be nothing without all you

Damn! Is that a bit of grit in my eye....  ;)

Nice work gents, keeping it in the family .
I like nai's avatar. Not sure I'd wear something so personal as the craggs banner on a tee (though it is genius) - that would be juvenile and offensive...
"UKB - dire at every level" would be good though.
Title: Re: Site Sale

I'd go with a simple
"UKB" on the front and

Dire at every level - Chris Craggs
on the back.

That was my initial thought, with "dire at every level" on the front and maybe a subtle ukb on the sleeve.
But equally "dire at every level" across the back and ukb/ukbouldering on the front
or some comibination of, but i wouldn't wear the UKC mockup, as magpie said, from afar you could be mistaken...

Title: Re: Site Sale
Post by: Serpico on February 10, 2010, 05:22:05 pm
Seriously, it's great that it's been bought by someone within our little community.
The rumour I'd heard previously was that we'd been bought by venture capitalists who were going to break the site up and sell it off in bits. The word was that Johnny Brown had been bought by a North Wales Limestone bouldering site, Magpie had been sold to a site run by Hamsters that specialised in squeezing wee Scots Lasses until their eyes bulged, and that the NHS had repossessed PaulB.
It's a relief...

Can we pay extra for personalised message T shirts? I don't say much on this site but do turn it on for laughs and good information. Hence, as a professional with a bit of spare cash, if I can help the site by getting slightly overcharged for a modified standard UKB T shirt which said as an example:

' "Steve... you've forgotten to take your medication again."  Mick Ryan'

How could I not take up the offer? Helping to keep UKB, UKB and all that.

Unfortunately wheels aren't currently supported in linux.

Actually most linux distros have a wheel (http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/faq.xml#su).

Its the default name for the group that has permissions to access the root user account (and then wreck all sorts of havoc if you don't know what you're doing, or more usefully perform installs and updates etc. etc.).

There ends todays completely useless and irreverent Linux insight (http://www.themixingbowl.org/static/img/smilies/geek.gif).

Just an idea, but what about jazzing up the Wiki a bit more to help increase traffic?

I get the impression its pretty underused at the moment.  It appears only myself and GCW have written anything up to date.

But it has the potential to be another shop-front for UKB if its bulked out with more content and has some banner adds and/or AdWords included.

I've just added a section on the Handy Web-Cams, and at some (vague) point in the future will try and get all of the topos on Vimeo included on the site, but can't modify the inclusion of banners/adwords.

Just an idea that might help put a few more pennies in the coffers.

Is there an option to store topos etc on UKB/the Wiki?  I ask because Vimeo storage sizes are becoming more limited nowadays and things like the Brownstones guide are quite big

I guess there is as its a MediaWiki installation (that used by Wikipedia) and you can upload images at least to that, although the button selection for editing is rather more limited than Wikipedia's implementation, need to go and read the MediaWiki docs (local help files don't appear to be installed).

Just tried uploading a PDF, but it appears I'm unable to, upon submitting the file to be uploaded it blanks the path to the PDF from the box and tells me the field is empty.  Perhaps there is currently a block on uploading *.pdf files?  The history of uploaded files only lists *.gif 's.

Would need to have this changed somehow if possible if the Wiki is to have the topos included (perhaps due to the limitation's appearing on Vimeo, and to promote UKB further).

A more obvious link to the Wiki might be a good idea too, I never know where to find it.

Quick answers:

- wiki logins may need to be sorted after the recent forum upgrades - some users on ukcaving can't get in.
- agree that the wiki needs more publicity and this is something being discussed.
- wiki can store pdfs but needs to be explicitly enabled.
- yes magpie, something like the navbar at http://ukcaving.com/board (http://ukcaving.com/board) might be a good idea.

Yes, that's the sort of thing I meant.  Then nosy people might be more inclined to click, at the moment it's only going to get looked at by people who know it is there.

I’m pleased to announce that Scouse deadlifting wad and coding genius Sam Williams (Climbing Sheep) is my new partner and co-owner of UKB. It seems fitting to mark the occasion with selling UKB tee shirts again. (https://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=w_bl_sl_s_ap_web_83450031?ie=UTF8&node=83450031&field-brandtextbin=UK+Bouldering)

From a business point of view we want to get the site back on to a more stable financial and technology footing. A major update of the site in reliability, look and functionality is overdue. Sam will be working on this over the next few months and we will look for feedback on a test site when its ready.

Thanks to our sponsors past and present who have kept the boat afloat for the last 8 years. We will look afresh at ways to ensure that our Sponsors get excellent value for their support of UKB.

As for the community nature and character of UKB and it being a place for keen climbers to have open discussions long may that continue.

He quit posting after his moderator status was removed for criticising the way the forum update was handled as I understand it.

Welcome IO3!

I still really like the site even if it seems a bit quiet these days. Hope it keeps going :)

One could percieve a conflict of interest if a mod. launches another online bouldering-focused media platform.

Nah. The thing I always liked about ukb is it didn’t seem about making money and had a more subversive edge than the other channel. Not everyone has to have a ‘good attitude’ here. It’s maybe lost a bit of that over the years. These days we all conform to the system haha

Grimer is (was?) an editor for R&I and has his own burgeoning multimedia platform - burn the witch!
