dunno if anyone else ha tried browsing this site from a pocket pc, but on refreshing the page or doing summat that reloads the menu bar you get an error, saying the layer does not exist.

I've encountered this on my Palm browser as well, when I was on holiday in Corsica. It's caused by the Javascript navigation bar code.
It's not a priority to sort because as far as I know, you're the first person apart from me to have accessed the site via a PDA, and also coz the new site's navigation will all be via a nice CSS menu and the problem will go away.
