When you've been to this crag, just post saying when you were there and what condition it is in, i.e. whats wet, whats dry etc.
It really is as simple as that. lets keep it on topic, just notes about nick, chit-chat in other threads, cheers.

well, this thread aint gettin no love. Remember years ago I posted in this forum that a jug had fallen off at Rubber con and noone cared then either.
I shall spearhead a one man rubicon revival.
conditions on Saturday, good on the rocks. Rubicon roof is dry, Zeke and the bastard are wet (or have wet streaks), sissy looks horible but dry, kudos wall is all mint, dangerous bros and tribes are mint, caviar is fcuked and thats your lot.
Very wet and marshy underfoot however.

I thought 8a but I have long arms. Where you used to rock back right to a shattered flakey thing you now have to pop to the flatty above, as you've now got this with the right rather than the left you get to hold a single finger crimp with the left whilst the right bobs off the flatty to a sidepull, then you can get the left on the flatty (as god intended), then its the same to the top. If you were a midget it would be impossible.
Went last night and the underfoot wetness has really dried up a lot this week. Patches of wetness on the undercut on Zeke and The Bastard's still sopping.
Zeke is quite hard by the way.

How wet is Caviar?

Prolly about a week before its climbable mate. Streaks of wetness around the starting footholds then the round the gaston is a bit mingus.

On Saturday 14th May Rubicon was mostly dry. Only routes / bouldering not doable were Caviar (v.close to being dry) and Bastard (always wet at bottom). Remarkably good grip in the sun but sharp as ever. Andy

Report from last night : main cove flooring drying out, still a puddle under the roof. Undercuts at bottom of Zeke hard section still wet, bastard still wet - sissy dry. Over to Kudos and its all fine - humid last night though and felt a bit shit. Dangerous brothers and tribes are fine, starting moves on caviar are sopping - too wet to be dried with a towel too. Round the corner to Salar (marvellous route) and thats all mint.

Hooray! a Rubicon renaissance! Yesterday there were loads of bods out. From Rob Smith and the Harris to Mark Shazam, picking up Si Moore and our very own Doylio (effort on Salar lads) on the way. Inspite of fairly heavy rain in the afternoon everything is pretty much dry. Nearly - thanks to towel action on the sidepulls on Caviar thats almost ok but still has streaks. Predictably the Bastard is still wet before the bulge, but then, its not august is it?
Kudos wall in direct sunlight a bit greasy but otherwise all in good nic.

True, i've done harder 7c+s. Strangley it was given 8a+ by first ascentionist Malc Taylor, mind you he also gave Rattle and Hump 8a+ :roll: . I'd say Salar would be a 7a+ boulder prob and the nearby bouldery route Caviar would be solid 7c, should make more than a plus diffrence on the sport grade! It's funny with these boulder prob sport routes though, the stamina plodders struggle with them and swear they're hard 8a.
BTW little (grinning) Rob did Salar in quick time, so shorties have no excuse.

could be summert to do with big slap/dyno moves are just more in fashion these days. think just about every dyno in the country first went up at a way higher grade than they are today - this example is even more so cos the move is on a route, so to ploddy sportclimbers its going to look well unlikley but through a boulderers eyes it don't look too bad.

Aye but Malc Taylor didn't use the strange pinch grippy hold out left for some reason. He climbed it direct using a shitty slopey crimp thing. A different proposition altogether. It felt a grade easier than the sissy and dangerous brothers to me.

He nearly got it on first red point, sticking the sloper for half a second, no joy on subsequent attempts. He was back on it last night.
Cornice was in fine condition BTW.

no no paul, dangerous isn't piss. On the subject of Rubicon one of the routes which is most often dry is Hot Fun Closing, which although looks like a piece of shit (you do have to do Kudos at the start unfortunately) is actually damn good as the holds above the break are some of the nicest at Rubicon. Plus you get the history of doing the peaks first 8a.

Rubicon is damp. The sissy is dry, Zeke is wet, the bigger splash wall was damp. Caviar is soaked, but starts out of a lake, so that's alright.

Oh my god I've never seen it so flooded. The whole crag and path upto and beyond the Cornice is at least a foot under water!
Probably best to leave it for a day or 2.

I dare say they will be fine although the ground will be muddy. Conditions might even be excellent. I always check www.buxtonweather.co.uk to find out how much rain has fallen recently, it also has a link to a weathercam at Harpur Hill so you can monitor how the weather is prior to a visit.

went for a walk down Monsal Dale yesterday, the river is very high at rubicon and is about 3 or 4 inches deep under caviar. All the walls are wet and there actually is water cascading down kudos wall. My advice - leave it until at least feb.

There should be a big turnaround come the 17th or so though.
I'm expecting the best conditions this year to hit some time between the 12th and 21st of Feb. Make sure you have some time off work around then, and you'll very likely be rewarded.

Dumb question.. but is it possible to boulder at Raven Tor at this time of year? I just assumed it would be seeping / pockets would be wet.. would be useful to know if the powerband / rattle and hump area stays dry... yorkshire, or at least my part of it, is soaked..

Called in to Rubicon on Fri Feb 24th and was shocked how deep the water was right up to the base of the crag - about 4-6 inches underneath Caviar and Rubicon itself. The only dry patch of land was a small island by the Press Wall, though even this had water directly at its foot. Nothing was do-able. I can't remember the water levels getting this high in previous winters and I'm wondering wether the level of the wier has risen slightly. Raven Tor, by contrast, was actually surprisingly dry (see other thread for details).

Sat 17th March
The tides going out, there's plenty of muddy silt under the three tiers, some stepping stones help but its hard keeping your boots clean and mud off the rock.
There's a dwindling puddle under rubicon but the warm up traverse was fine.
Kudos wall was also fine but some holds were getting damp in the rain yesterday.
There are still some stepping stones under caviar and it was seeping a bit.
Not sure how it will be after todays snow/hail storms ?

Kudos wall was fine today. even amongst the snow showers and the mountain rescue team rescuing dogs. thats not to say the seepage may return, the tide was coming in whilst we were there.

I'm only replying on this thread for the novelty of saying something about peak limestone which isn't derogatory. Boulderings bone dry, path is fine.

I've not the rich pedigree he has I'm afraid. The calling of the lime is a position that is handed from generation to generation, and as I am part of the Harris' generation I fear I shall never fulfill my potential whilst he is still crimping.

Was there on Sunday afternoon. The ground under Kudos Wall and the three level traverse wall was nice and dry. The only pool was under the base of Rubicon (and the long easy traverse). There were lots of mossies hatching out of this pool though, so we came away with a few bites.

Does Rubicon or anywhere else near Matlock with bouldering stay dry in all weathers? Visiting a friend in the area today (from Durham) and might be able to get away early. With the forecast showers I was wondering whether to stop off at Almscliff (as the Virgin Wall will probably stay dry) or keep on going and try to get some use out of my Peak bouldering guide.

Raven tor is probably your best bet for things to do in prolonged periods of rain.

Stupidly checked it out earlier, flooded up to a foot, after the bridge and under caviar. Lots of wet streaks on the kudos wall :thumbsdown:

Cheers woz - I went on saturday and all the stuff in the peak guide was dry (albeit with a muddy landing under the initial traverses section) and stayed dry throughout the intermittant rain.
I think Rubicon could well become a complete favourite: easy access, generally dry, nice warm-ups (really liked the two lowest traverses at the RHS), good problems (with some "name" ticks to aspire to... mojo-tastic), lots of eliminate potential, and most importantly a large population of moorhens and coots. What I wouldn't give to have the place on my doorstep. Think I might put out a beta plea for some of the problems I worked on before my next visit though - it's a bit unrelenting to waste time with duff sequences.

Still flooded yesterday evening. Water right up to the base of caviar, which is covered in wet streaks. You need a pair of waders to get to Kudos wall!

it was wet last night, a bit muddy underfoot but - significantly - still a shit venue. you could get past the puddle but most stuff was wet. and it's raining today. hopefully, someone will have the vision to pull the whole place down and build a laser quest.

Is it fuck! I went last night and Caviar in particular is fully sacked. The start is ok to the sidepull then its fucked from there up. Tribes is wet, Dangerous brothers too, too old to be bold looks dry (but its still shit), Kudos is wet, bigger splash is fine, press is fine, low right start climbable, left isnt, three 5b travs damp but climbable, and rubicon roof and routes to left all sacked.

Kudos wall was fine yesterday
The three traverses bay was ok just a little damp mud underneath
but fine with a mat, plenty of spider webs to clear off though.
Start of Caviar was ok, but looked damp higher up, but sunshine like today
will soon put it right.

Have never climbed here in the evening, always done the early am start to catch the cool temps.. whats it like late afternoon? shit shift patterns at work mean I cant get there in the am.. dont really fancy driving down from hudds in the afternoon to be greeted by a greasy wall!

although hot there was at least a breeze in sheffield, but it wasnt at rubicon last night. I Think the wind might have been blowing over the top of the crag, so that down at the bottom of the wall it was rather still and not great by some margin.
The problem with evenings now is that its still warm until it goes dark. When the wind changes it may well be much better. Dark at 2000 at the moment.

We've got high pressure to the west now, meaning a northerly fairly dry, coolish airflow. In fact this has been the case much of the summer. South facing crags like rubicon ain't where its at.

It was still looking very waterlogged, the Caviar wall was under water and you had to swing on a few trees to step around the lake at the start - it was lapping at the base of the 3 traverses. Hopefully not beyond repair though! :dance1:

Heyup Tim climbed here on Sunday, all bone dry on kudos. Caviar still flooded. Lake level still fairly high but dropping fast. Just about possible to scamper round the edge without getting a bootfull! I'm keen if you fancy a session at the weekend?

emailed you mate. However would be keen for some updates on the state of the crag this week if anyone is up there. Particularly interested in salar or hot fun closing/kudos guess it would be important if the warm up traverse beneath rubicon was dry.

Just come back from Kudos wall. All dry, a little bit of residual dampness at the back of certain deep pockets but does not affect the climbing at all. The warm up area is fooked though, wet and greasier than a mechanic's rag!

Check the Metoffice's rainfall radar before you set off. In typical April weather as we've been having checking the recent past weather info is far more useful than a forecast. Metcheck is a joke. Nicely laid out info does not trump accuracy imo.

Called in today (Fri). Kudos Wall was in excellent condition. A good drying breeze and no seepage. The Three Tiers bit was largely dry but the ground was quite muddy and the lowest footholds were damp. There was still a pond underneath Rubicon itself.

Last night at Rubicon was nice. All the 3 tiers were dry although the low level traverse footholds had dusty mud on them. A little muddy underneath but damp rather than soaking wet.
Kudos wall fully dry.
Semi flooded under Caviar although Tribes & Dangerous Brotheers looked OK.

i would hope that with a bit of sun today that rubicon would dry up at least - it doesn't really take much seepage as such, its more just surface run-off from above.
If the tor was wet from condesing mist rather than seepage (which sounds to be at least partially true if it was wet all over) then that could well dry out today with a bit of breeze.

Let's hope you are correct again.
There was a decent sized puddle last Friday affecting the left hand side of the traverse but not the three tier bit.

All the bouldering was bone dry yesterday pm. It was very warm but conditions were still pretty good and I'm sure they will have improved later on. The puddle under Rubicon had not grown so the 3 tier traverses were fine.

6.30ish at the moment. Seems to me that the humidity is a bigger factor as provided there's a bit of cloud about it's still climbable before then when there's no moisture in the air.

I was there last night and it was pretty good, just a shame I couldn't say the same about my arms :-\
cragx was a bit weird, should have been good, felt sticky damp at first, but then went a bit slippy. There again it could have been my arms again.
It's stopped raining here, Ecclesall Road South / Knowle Lane junction and if I was climbing tonight I would certainly be tempted to go out as the air temperature is quite low as well.

i recon it should be fine - last time i was out at rubicon is pissed it down briefly and it was OK - theres a lot of tree cover at the moment which helps. Although my luck with predicting rubicon conditions will no doubt come to and end sooner or later.

Your run of luck/judgement continues dave. It was bone dry last night despite the fact that it rained quite a lot while I was there. Conditions were pretty shit though as it was quite humid and still about 16 degrees when I left around 19.45. Some holds felt ok whereas others were really soapy and at times it felt like the chalk was evaporating off my fingers before I'd actually touched the rock (this could have just been down to my ever sweating tips though).

Went out for a walk with the family and had a quick look today. Still pretty flooded although you could get to Kudos Wall ok. Further on by Caviar etc was still quite bad. Rock all looked dry. I was saying exactly the same thing as you Jon! Why is it flooded now when it's hardly rained but when it's been belting down for a week it's dry?! :-\

cheers the for the heads up guys. tis bizarre the way it can flood from virtually no rain. i can only imagine the water table in general is quite high right now, maybe the ground is saturated so any rain run straight off into the rivers or summert.

The flood will be the rain from the end of the week, it can take a couple of days for rain to make its way off the hills and into the Wye.

river showed no signs or retreating during the day today, but for the keen Dang Bros and TOTBB were probably accessable, the 3-tier warmup traverse was pretty muddy, but kudos wall was dry and in reasonable nick.

I went down on Sunday to feed the ducks with May (bread, not May to the ducks, although those big swans were looking like they were considering giving her a peck until she started hissing back at them) We came prepared with wellies as it was absolutely hammering it down on Sat night in Tideswell, I wasn't surprised it was flooded.

What was the water level like? I know it rain loads in Sheff yesterday and last night, but buxweather is only showing 11mm so maybe the rains missed that side of the peak. :shrug:

My in-laws were walking in WCJ yesterday and said it rained but nothing like as hard as in the pavement-busting downpour in Sheff. Apparently the rain was light enough so you stayed dry by walking under the trees over the path.

Eyup! Water level fine as we left the crag, just condensation was the issue. There was no significant rain while we were there but can't speak for what happened after 10pm... Lets hope the mugginess stays away next week! :wall:

The water level was pretty high, with the approach, the warm up travs, all of the crag between the Dragonflight wall and Pirahna being flooded, even a little pool under Kudos SS. The rock was in pretty good nick mind, just rather hard to access. My wellies have been coming in pretty useful in the last couple of weeks!

Rock was fine today, still no seepage. A bit of water and mud under the warm-up trav and Caviar but nothing insurmountable. BTW there are a couple of palates stashed behind the trees right of Kudos wall for keeping pads out of the mud when trying Caviar etc post-flood.

Very muddy/flooded under the traverses but the rock all looked dry. Sissy / Zeke dry. Kudos wall all dry and not too bad underfoot. Muddy and flooded under Caviar etc but still doable with the stepping stone / pallet combo if you were determined enough. Didn't climb there so dunno 100% about conditions but the rock felt good and at 14 degrees the only thing lacking was a bit of breeze. Crag X partly wet but some things workable / doable with a bit of drying effort. If the rain holds off then it should be in good nick again soon. No crows were seen. Lime season still in full effect word.

You never know with the land of darkness - could be ok, could be fucked. There have been times when I would have sworn it would be fucked and it hasnt been, and times when it should've been brilliant and it hasnt.
I would have thought Rubbercon should be ok tbh. Been showers more than torrential constant downpour. That said, Buxton weather reckons 23mm since midnight. Which sounds quite like a torrential downpour I suppose. Hoping to go later...

We've had the 23mm since about 6am this morning... my back garden is underwater and the roads are running with it. It's really really wet and we are still getting very heavy showers >:(
The crags themselves might be dry though but I don't know about water levels underfoot or runoff through the trees above and down the cliffs.

Well I decided to have a look and unbelievably after driving through monsoon conditions on the way there and getting soaked and muddy on the path of doom, Crag X was bone dry yesterday afternoon. Odd conditions as it was cold (7 degrees) but there was a lot of moisture in the air as it was throwing it down most of the time I was there. Wet streaks were forming above unfortunately and all this rain's gotta go somewhere so i wouldn't be surprised if it's gopping now.
As Dob says though, you just never know!
Didn't check Rubicon as I was drenched enough by then.

Mint today - if you can get to the rocks. All routes/boulders dry, but crag fully flooded. Worse I would say than has been all summer. Only two routes climbable above a dry floor - Zeke and Sissy (if you want to be pedantic, there is that thing zips bolted left again, but I dont even know what thats called). Usually the flooding doesnt cover the ground by kudos wall, but it does today. 3 to 4 inches there. Nearly welly top on way in/out.
I know it rained a lot last night, but I cant help but start to wonder whether some of its nearly perma flooding is down to either deliberate or bad management of the sluice gate. And I know these last few years have been more rainy than most, but fuck me - I've never known it flood like this. Whose responsibility do you suppose the sluice is?

maybe a little old, but Caviar was seeping badly last weekend although hot fun was all dry, as was the rest of Kudos wall. Sissy dry, Zeke had some wet streaks. The Lake was down and path mostly dry.
Paul, myself and Mummra will be in attendance the weekend after this if you need a rope holding or maybe he'll be keen for some Kudos action this w/e - PM him if you want to get it done.

Unfortunately Paul, i am all too well familiar with the moves. Silly mistakes on redpoint have halted me ticking the route! I blame conditions though. ::) I'll let you know when i head down.

If only I hadn't still been in agony from my first training session of the new year (and therefore climbing like a tit) I would have been able to take advantage of the -3.5 degree temps and dry grippy rock. The lake was quite low, muddy under the traverses (but it was frozen so no problem), a bit of dampness in some of the big pockets on the warm ups but apart from that dry. Sissy dry, wet streak on Zeke but looked ok, Kudos Wall MINT & HFC dry. The only thing that looked unclimbable was Caviar / Beluga which had icicles hanging off it.
I was even more surprised to find Crag X in perfect condition. There was the odd patch of dampness but not affecting any holds. My frustration was then complete as after "warming up" at Rubicon I was unable to even contemplate pulling on any of the holds there.

The lake was quite low, muddy under the traverses (but it was frozen so no problem), a bit of dampness in some of the big pockets on the warm ups but apart from that dry. Sissy dry, wet streak on Zeke but looked ok, Kudos Wall MINT & HFC dry. The only thing that looked unclimbable was Caviar / Beluga which had icicles hanging off it.
I was even more surprised to find Crag X in perfect condition. There was the odd patch of dampness but not affecting any holds. My frustration was then complete as after "warming up" at Rubicon I was unable to even contemplate pulling on any of the holds there.

I have to say I was suprised to find myself at Rubicon yesterday (Sunday) but can concur that the Kudos Wall was in decent condition, but the warming up area damp. We had a look at Crag X but it was totally unclimable. What a difference a day makes...

Today Rubicon was in a right state, there's big run off lines above Hot Fun leading all the way onto Kudos wall. Caviar, the sissy - the bastard, all wet. Warm up area wet.

Pre clip is the way! The downclimb would only be about French 6c. I would however salute the superior ethics of anyone making the clip on lead :bow:

Me and Ned repeated this last night- start as for Tsunami but when you get the right hand sidepull use either the pinch or undercut to bust left hand again to the big side pull jug and finish up bigger tail.
We both thought it was harder than Tsunami but not quite 8a+, really good moves and nice to finish higher then bigger splash jug!! Get repeating guys...
Ned says that he reckons it was climbable yesterday.

All good on Kudos wall today, traverses looked dry too. I think this dancing fish problem may be somewhat harder/8D if your reach is less than about 5'10" (i.e a midget).

Kudos all bone dry as well as the warm up area. Apparently there had been a massive drainage streak running down the Press an hour before I arrived at 7pm but it had completely gone - good conditions tonight. Caviar dry too.
If anyone finds a small Black Diamond headtorch anywhere between the warmup area and the road, its mine - it may have dropped out of my pad on the way out. Cheers.

caviar (and beluga) are both probably the best climbing Rubbercon has to offer. Theres something a bit different about those routes. I hope to get back on Beluga soon - poss next week.

nik now caviar is dry it'll probably only get wet again come autumn unless there's some seriously biblical rain. the main thing to watch out for is when the river floods the base when it rains hard, otherwise its a safe bet now.

JB was leaving just as I arrived, I only saw him in the car not at the crag but he claimed to have been on Caviar. I can only assume he was involved in some nefarious sabotage as the second bolt was very loose. I would have tightened it up but didn't have any tools and thought it best left to the experts. So experts there you go, the second bolt on Caviar is loose.

For nuts which keep working loose despite repeat tightening the best bet is to change the nut for a (stainless of course) Nylock. It won’t necessarily stop the hanger moving but the nut won’t work its way off due to the rotation.

For those not too familiar with stainless nuts and bolts - take care when putting a new nut onto an old bolt. Stainless has a nasty habit of seizing up if the threads aren't perfectly lined up or if theres a bit of crap in there. Lubricating with a bit of spit helps.

A small shop upstairs in the well known Sheffield climbing wall The Foundry. Good range of stock of all things climbing (guides/books, shoes, harnesses, pads, videos, training equipment etc.) with friendly and knowledgeable staff. They even have a website (http://www.cragxclimbing.com/). Stays very dry after rain too (unless its the downpour of 2007!) I'd recommend it ;) :P

It did hit the Con at about 6pm. We arrived at 7pm and it was lovely and fresh. I was almost tempted to put my shoes on.

Completely flooded tonight, I've never seen it so deep. We walked over to the Cornice (which was running with water) and watched the family of swans were around at the foot of caviar where the path was at least a foot or two underwater.

Last year at one point it got so deep that the stacked pallets with mats on top became a sort of raft. Many a happy hour I spent bobbing around in the filthy water waiting for redpoint attempts. A dinghy and waders might have been more appropriate.

Yesterday afternoon the rock at Rubicon was all dry. The bases of Kudos wall and the Sissy was OK, the base of the traverse wall was boggy, the bases of Rubicon and Caviar and Barracuda were under a few inches of water, and the bases of Tribe, DB and TOTBB, were patchy slippy mud and puddles.
The other place was completely drenched in condensation.

Ahh i see what you mean mate, damn shame as was gonna look at the sissy if malham is wet... which it seems like it is. Suspect a dingy and wellies is the only hardcore option for rubicon routes at the moment.

Popped in here for a look on the way home. The water level has dropped a bit. You can walk to Kudos wall with only a bit of puddle hopping and the ground under Kudos and the Sissy/Zeke is dry. Still flooded under caviar etc.

A good low toehold has appeared for the LF on Bigger Splash Direct due to the rock crumbling making the pull-on off the ground easier. The crux slap to the jug off the undecut is still the same as your feet are higher by this stage.

Went for a walk at WCJ today. Kudos wall was all dry. Slight bit of seepage on some routes (the bastard and the sissy), although you would have to be pretty mental to want to be slimestone sport climbing in how horrendously cold it felt.

The Tor was pretty much all dry last night. The only wet hold I noticed was the first undercut on Converter, which hasn't been dry at all yet this season. (This only applies to the bouldering, but the routes looked fine too from the floor).

I was there during the rain. Its pretty impressive to see huge amount of runoff piling down from the top of the prow and rapidly turning the RHS into a big black streak. Not so great for the Austrians camped in the carpark. Despite that, it all seemed to be drying well when we left at around lunch time.

Hi Wil. I waded in there this morning and was as you said but word was that the crag had totally dried in the afternoon with the wind. There is a trench of water under Kudos but the ground under the Press is fine.

Update from yesterday - we waded in and found that all of Kudos wall was soaking!
Assume it's runoff from thawing out above, but nothing dry at all. The flood is still there so you need wellies just to get beyond the bridge.

Kudos Wall v dry. The warm up area was a bit damp. Bit muddy underfoot - you could have done Dangerous bros... Cavier nearly dry but big puddle underneath and about a million people walking up and down the dale.

The traverse walls aren't in very good nick, wet in the pockets and the ground is particularly sludgey. Porthole traverse good as is kudos wall.

Upon visiting today, large pool under Rubicon again (very muddy and boggy), various wet holds on the traverse, some bouldering dry but very clammy and sweaty.
Wet patches along the crag including a large wet streak to the left of Rubicon. Hoping to head here in the next few days so an update would be appreciated!

Not flooded at lunchtime today but some seepage streaks were coming down Kudos and the warmup area was pretty wet (apart from the 3 travs bit). I did Kudos hard way, bigger splash and tail and miller's tale, The press crimp was in one of the streaks and was wet. That was b4 the rain this afternoon tho.

Bigger prize was given 7a as it originally didn't use any of those holds above the break. It went from an undercut to little slopers over the bulge to the left of those used in the video. Why the grade didn't change when people started using the right hand holds I don't know.

Ah OK. There was a tree there on the right which has definitely been cut down this winter - it was still there in November.
This has opened up the wall some more. As such, there are a couple of logical lines up the space now and since the new guide simply says to the right of a Bigger Splash, this has probably led to the confusion...

Thought there was something different about the trees in highreputes video but put it down to camera angle/the time of year compared to when I climbed ABP last summer. The finger rail used for the right hand in the first move was clean last year, with the tree, and I'm pretty certain I was leaf dabbing my way through the move to the top.

routes - rubicon dry but with in-situ pool. zeke (lowdown) pretty damp, sissy and routes to the left looking dry. hot fun closing dry. too old to be bold, danger bros and tribe all looked dry. caviar - barracuda area seeping. salar dry.
as of this afternoon. it hasnt stopped raining since i left at 6ish so it may get worse.

I tried this briefly last November before everything got wet for the year and went from LH crimp to shitty RH, then again to the jug without using the pinch at all, so it's also possible like that (though I didn't do it). I have no idea if this is easier or harder, it was just how I presumed it went...

That is the direct sequence, originally done by Ru, but seems to be put down as "Peckit's Problem" by those with 8a.lookatme scorecards, presumably cos he claimed it after being told it was a project. Similar or slightly harder difficulty, but less reachy.

Na, Peckit's Problem aka Ru's Problem is using the RH pinch but not the LH crimp, going straight to the pinch from the back wall. There's a video somewhere. The way I'm talking about was very reachy, even at 6ft 2.

I tried this again at some point last year. There was a bit of crimp/pocket at the end of the pinch that has snapped off since I did it and I couldn't repeat it just holding the pinch. So technically I've no longer done it.

Saw Mariusz Pudzianowski on worlds strongest man years back trying to describe the shit conditions he had experienced during the atlas stones event, and he said something like "it is hot-sticky, not sticky-sticky, sticky-slippy" so I use sticky-slippy (said in a vaguely Eastern European accent) as the opposite of sticky-damp, although this may not be entirely pc behaviour on my part :P

Rubicon starting to suffer again today. Kudos wall was sticky damp with a few wet footholds. Zeke and caviar much wetter than a month ago. All the bouldering under rubicon was wet.

The place which shall not be named is totally fucked as of half an hour ago. Condensation though, so when it cools down will be ok.
Rubicon pretty good, although sweltering. Deep dark pockets wet and dank, but kudos wall stuff all totally climbable (if your skin can bear it). Routes wise, the sidepull on caviar looked dry although the hold after the gaston was fucked. Beluga looked possible, as did dangerous bros and the sissy. Tribes had wet bits on, but would probably be driable.

It's just a bit muddy at the right hand end - you definitely can't step off for the final few metres, but not actaully a puddle anymore. Under the right hand end 3 level traverses it's kind of damp mud/dirt. You can put a pad down, but it'll soak up a bit of wetness.

Rubicon wall was totally dry today. Traverse area flooded, Caviar flooded, Sissy dry, you can just about reach Kudos area without getting wet feet if you're careful!

Today: kudos wall started with seepage lines down it but these dried back in the sun so it was all dry by about 1 o'clock. Caviar flooded. Sissy/zeke looked dry. Puddle under rubicon.

I had a look today, theres probably about 20cm of water over the path just after the bridge, couldn't see below the sissy as its hidden behind the tree and i wasn't in a paddling mood. Expect its got some water below, also the rest of the crag seemed to have alot of run off, once again didn't notice the state of the sissy.

It was very flooded on Saturday, had to traverse in to avoid the water and kudos wall was soaking! Few people on one of the routes around The Sissy. Other than that it definitely wasn't worth a trip...

Went today. Traverses dry, rubicon/zeitgeist dry, kudos dry. Caviar soaked.
Went for a walk and noticed moat buttress is drying up nicely and upper circle dry apart from a few pockets on eat the rich.
Side note: are there access problems with climbing on upper circle? (I remember reading a thread on here not so long back). The steep path up has been covered in branches and a wildlife trust post installed at the foot of it.

Hi Eddie did Brachiation tonight quite a lot of wet holds but manageable tho very top past roof propely wet. Free monster a bit better tho top bit at end wet also. Rubicon bouldering bone dry. Small amounts seepage Too Old/Caviar area.

Fairly grim today. The area in the trees around Rubicon was gopping, Kudos wall was slightly better and a couple of people were bouldering.

Don't know specifically but someone on the Peak Partner/Conditions facebook group reported that the Tor is completely soaked*. My guess would be that Rubicon is similar.
*Presumably from runoff and with the sun now out and wind having changed direction hopefully it will dry back quite quickly. Or maybe I'm just being optimistic.

Yesterday there were a few dry patches, but most of it was soaked
Too Old to be Bold was dry-ish except for maybe the end, the left hand end (salar area) was bone dry except for pockets at the very top. Anything to the right was utterly gopping.
Water level-wise, everything except for Salar end is submerged, but wellies make it fine.

The guy I always see at Rubicon with his miniture blue gym crash pad was at Stanage Apparent North on Sunday afternoon. This suggested to me Rubicon wasn't in good nick right now. Of course I could be completely wrong and often am.

Popped in 30 mins ago on the way back from the tor. It's very flooded so I couldn't really get passed the bridge. But there was visible ground under kudos wall. Kudos wall itself looked in pretty good nick from across the river.

Pretty dry but still v muddy under the warm up trav. For those looking to do routes Zeke looked dry enough, Dangerous bros and 7c to its right, Salar, hot fun all dry. Caviar soaked. About 3 inches of water still below Caviar. Kudos wall all dry.

Drying up nicely as of yesterday.
Still a couple of cm of sticky mud under the traverses but all the routes in this bit dry.
Kudos wall and the ground underneath all dry.
The first undercut side pull on Caviar was wet but the rest looked dry, suspect some claggyness in the break tho. Routes to the right dry but all were muddy underfoot.

By 3pm today kudos wall was all dry (was a bit damp this morning) but the nick was gash - very humid. The bouldering around the 3 traverse area looked gopping. Didn't look at the routes there, but caviar had a wet bit low down.

Kudos wall looked mint this evening. Routes around caviar were seeping, as were those around zeke.
Bouldering all dry and not too bad underfoot, I'd take a tarp for the traverses area. Little pool under rubicon but with a bit of carpet you can get within a meter of the start and keep dry.
Crag X was pretty good. Damp at the back (lowest section of footholds). And dripping coming from higher up. Not amazing but enough to go at.

Similar yesterday, though the Sissy and Kudo wall looked ok, Zeke had a couple of wet spots. Not sure if it has been noted elsewhere but the first hanger on Salar is missing.

Warm up traverse bit damp on holds but ok, usual big pond under rubicon. Ground drying out under three tier, ok for mats but
still too damp not to get mud on your shoes if you step off a mat. Should dry out a fair bit this week I'd have thought

I can confirm this, I was there when the fella came down with the final jug landing on the back of his head, I still can't believe he wasn't bleeding! He did clear the loose rock from the top once he had recovered

It was my first time there and I thought it was a nice spot. Theres not a huge amount of problems there, but we had a good session there today.. Easily enough for a work out.
Its on a flat bit on a slope - so theres not a huge area for kids to run around in, but its 5 min from the car park and there are loads of trails/paths for the non climbers to go on/explore. Theres a well made metalled path along the valley floor that I'm sure little ones could cycle along easily? Though not sure how long it goes on for... I'd say that if it wasnt suitable, its only 5-10 min back to the car then go somewhere else... loos in the car park too. Plattsy said it was dead last Sunday....
PS - north facing. In the shade.

Dolly - how old are the kids? The car park at Tideswell dale has some nice grass and is a decent place for a picnic. I've been twice down the dale with my kids. As tomtom says the bouldering spot itself is not great for a picnic plus it's up a steep path/steps and there's quite a few nettles around. The valley has a couple of spots where you can access the river to paddle and benches to chill/picnc on. It's perfect for easy biking. There are a couple of cave entrances - I'll take a headtorch next time as my kids were mad for them. The crag itself has the hardest Font 7a in the Peak - ET Bone home.

Today there is water from the foot bridge all the way to salar lapping the walls. Have in the past talked with bmc about working with the land owner to try and work together to stop this happening so often, although they didnt appear to have much motivation to take it on. I would rant on about them buying horse shoe but wont

I'll have a word Simon and see what the score is - there is a good chance that the lack of motivation from the BMC is related to the landowner not exactly being on board with having us climbing there. For my sins I've become a fan of bouldering at Rubicon since my first horror stricken visits, although I have to say that I save it for when the grit is fooked.

The landowner doesn't want us there anyway, so they aren't going to sign up to us building some kind of flood defence, which I'm doubtful would be permissible given the nature of the site (SSSI etc). :sorry:

The access situation in WCJ is very tenuous with landowners on the south (rubicon) side wanting no climbing on their land full stop. The BMC is working very hard to try and resolve these issues, but there's no magic wand. It's private land with no rights of access. Based on the fact that climbers are not allowed full stop, trying to get the land owners to agree to improving physical access for climbers during flooding periods seems a little optimistic.

Access in this area is extremely delicate and both BMC employees and volunteers give up a lot of time to maintaining it. Be under no illusions, both the fishing club and the DWT would happily ban climbing in this area - in fact in the last few years they have made moves towards doing so. Rubicon would likely not be affected due to it's position on the path (note a permissive footpath, not public ROW). But they are not the friendly folk who would happily lower water levels so we can climb more.

I'd suggest if so you need to educate yourself on the work that gets done or volunteer some time yourself. The Peak access team are currently looking for someone to help with the limestone area.

And it wouldn't flood if those pesky victorians hadn't built that mill/weir.
It never used to flood this often back in the day. I was talking to a local walking her a couple of years back and she reckoned one of the locals used to potter about and maintain the level on the sluice. He's long gone apparently and thus the sluice is never seasonally adjusted.
I also think that now the tunnels are open, the importance of a connecting path from cresbrook to litton, in terms of walkers etc, has lessened, and there will be less pressure on the fishing club to maintain it which is worrying in itself.
I've spoken to a few of the fishermen in recent years whilst at rubicon and they've never been anything other than friendly/chatty/encouraging etc.

Does seem that all that would be required was adjustment of the sluice gate to at least help, I can't imagine the flooding is useful for the wildlife/river banks/fisherpeople either? I think the broken gate issue is mentioned in the intro to the older Northern Limestone, and is the period where a lot of the routes on Moat Buttress got done as you could walk to them.
I am always amazed that given the membership cost, £900 a year (in effect 6 months due to season length) or a bargainous £50 a day I have never seen that many people fishing. If I paid £900 for a 6 month pass at the wall I would feel the need to be there every day to justify the expense.

Math is fine I wasn't dividing 900 by anything to get the 50, 50 is the separate day ticket price (for a restricted section of the river). Clearly fishing (perhaps in part due to my vegetarianism) holds little appeal to me, thus I struggle to see the rational to pay (what seems to me) a lot to do it.

Rivers should really not be 'kept'... And yes the dam, weir and mill race etc all alter the river (look at the sedimentation in the pond behind the weir). But flooding is a natural event that plays an important role in supplying nutrients and sediments to areas outside of the channel on the floodplain - and maintains a diversity of habitat that is generally considered a good thing by all except fishermen, people wanting to use the path and maybe a few climbers :)
Not to mention the water will flush away the dog/human turds at the base of the cliff :)
It's probably piss wet through and seeping anyway :)

it is a well behaved river - relatively slow to rise and fall with rainfall and plenty of spots for fish to shelter in during the highest water levels

I dare say this is the case, you could draw it as part of a general decline in local connection to the landscape. Increasingly land is managed by committees at arm length rather than locals on site, making simple changes frustratingly difficult to implement. What we need is an engaged local without an overt connection to climbing to take it on with the parish council and LAF.

Perhaps this local is the house that looks like a castle on the corner. Someone did tell me that they thought the new people who lived there had adjusted the sluice, possible because it's quite noisy and they were trying to reduce the water flowing down it. Purely speculation, but not great for flooding if true. They may be worth approaching.

I have made some more enquiries - we've been over this at length before so not new information I'm afraid. Locals and LAF etc have already been approached.
The responsibility for controlling the sluice lies officially with the Environment Agency. They have been informed by both locals and BMC alike but have shown no interest in acting based on the facts that no property is affected, there are alternative routes to the permissive path, and they have a stretched budget and more pressing problems etc.
However the new Peak NPA chief is ex-EA, so there might be an opportunity to bend an ear at some point, but don't hold your breath.
However I daresay a local with the right tool and connections could just get on with it as they saw fit and the EA either wouldn't know or care. I'd be interested to know if the fisherman see the flooding as an inconvenience or a necessary evil. I'll put a magic lamp and sluice valve key on my Christmas list.

I would not even market it as a problem for climbers but for walkers. The focus should be directed at the terrible erosion that has been caused upstream. There are two paths, one at 45 degrees weaving its way amongst the trees and the main track that resembles the conditions at Passchendaele even after the water has receded.
I do like the new silted up island though, nice little haven for wildlife.

It never used to be this way.
All year round, in terms of dry ground wasn't even a concern. It's turning into a tidal venue. By the the time the waters gone down, the cons will be horrific. We used to redpoint there in the depths of winter. I'd add a half and grade at least to all the routes, coz it will be mid May before we all get on them!

Climbed at Rubicon Yesterday morning, all of Kudos wall was dry and wasnt flooded, the start pocket of Tsunami was a bit gammy but easily dryable. The traverses were dry but still a bog under Rubicon, Caviar has also still got a big puddle at the bottom

Well... funny you should ask... because for part of a study I was involved in looking at the future of the Derbyshire Derwent Valley ( https://historicengland.org.uk/images-books/publications/future-climate-environmental-change-within-derwent-valley-mill-whs/ - really - you don't have to click on this and read it.. there are better things to do with your life.. ) I did some hydrological modelling for the catchment above Matlock - of which the River Wye - running through Rubicon - is part of....
My view is that the Wye being a karst river is strongly influenced by subsurface/subterranean flows - which will make it slow to respond to rainfall events. There is a long lag between rainfall becoming streamflow - with strong underground drainage means that hortonian overland flow is highly unlikely (overland flow being a rapid deliverer of water to the channel..). There will also be water table effects in play - which are gain important because of the role of subsurface drainage here. The flip side of this is that once water levels are raised they are likely to take a long time to go down.
As its been dry for the last three weeks, I would suggest (posh word for an educated guess) that the water table is presently quite low - so any rainfall we have in the next couple of days will probably be soaked up by that - and river levels will not rise much. In other words its probably going to be alright for Sunday unless it pisses it down every day between now and then.
However, at Rubicon, flow levels can be independently controlled by the weir and sluice at the bottom. It looks like these are never touched - but altering these could make a big difference to water levels under the crag. So you have to factor in the 'person who might change the sluice'...
Over the last two weeks the channel below CragX has been bone dry - when it was running for much of the earlier Summer - so my qualitative analysis would be that its all pretty dry at the moment and will take quite alot of rain to get the rivers going much...
All of the above, fails to take into account any 'on rock' conditions such as seepage/condensation/runoff - all of which can bugger up a climbing trip.
On a more practical note - rather than my prattle above, for the climber wanting to know what's what on a day to day situation with river levels (and of interest for the fisherfolk out there too..) is the excellent website Gaugemap - which gives you real time (slight delay) flow levels for all of the telemetry river gauges in the UK. The nearest and most useful for Rubicon is:

You can even follow individual gauges on twitter if you like... (@riverlevel_0125 ) though I've not tried that...

At that place we don't talk about the Thing, the Pinch and Sean's were all dry. On every other problem there was the odd damp hold. Starting to look like seepage too rather than just run off unfortunately.

Different bits different rates etc... It can dry pretty quickly after showers - often depends how much water was blown on to the face..

I'm 10 miles north in Hathersage but its soaking here, and still heavy rain and hail showers passing through. From my run this morning the showers looked to be heading mostly south too so very much expect that it'll be very wet pretty much everywhere across the Peak today.

Rubbishcon was wet but drying rapidly at 15.45. Get your armbands and flippers out though in order to get there! The crag that doesn't exist was seeping but Zippy's and Sean's were both dry, and I think Cherokee Lane was dry too, but I got massively perplexed with what to do again. Jericho etc. damp.

For what it's worth Caviar is rarely, if ever, dry this early in the year.

I did Caviar 5 May last year and that was lucky - it got wet after that for quite a few weeks. Chances of it being dry in April = exceedingly slim.

Traverses all dry last night, very muddy and puddly below though. A lad was bouldering all evening on The Press wall but I didn't go over there and didn't pay attention to anything leftwards. It's been pretty dry and windy all day so I imagine conditions will still be good.
Even better news though - the eggs were in, I got the last box. Last eggs before Last Eggs Before M1, if you fancy a long walk-in and a tortured reference.

Kudos wall bouldering mostly dry apart from a bit if run off down kudos which dried throughout the day. Sissy dry. Too old too be bold dry but very wet and muddy underneath. Caviar as suspected soaked.

Pinch/Jericho had damp high holds initially, and some low breaks wet, but seemed to be drying while I was there. Everything left from there dry until Sean's which was partially wet. Spiderman drenched. The Thing dry handholds but some footholds wet and final slot looked damp. Everything further left drenched.
Good nick on stuff like Hulk which was bone dry.

Must have been from the storms/showers last night then - was pretty good on Thursday - some seeps in the RH end of the low Zippys break (under pinch) but most of rest was fine (from what I saw). Hopefully this means it will dry up again fast...

Seans had dried by the time left. Went to rubicon later where i was annoyed to find huge areas around footholds patted (using a chalk ball i assume). It was weird and very pointless. Also it was bbq weather there......

Went last night, 95% dry on bouldering, very warm. Quagmire under the big long traverse, bit damp under the warmup traverses but not too bad.

All okish... Middle of long traverse damp. Kudos etc all ok. Three traverse wall fine. A bit clammy but serviceable conditions with slight breeze. Was a hefty bit short shower as I left that didn't do much damage.
I suspect X might be damp and a bit condensy- BUT I didn't look so that's a guess.

Just back from Rubicon. All fine. No runoff or seepage. Runoff doesn't look like its hit any of the routes to the left of Kudos wall etc.

The unmentionable place up the road was half decent yesterday afternoon/evening. A couple of damp (but dryable) holds... Starting holds on the pinch looked a wee bit suspect and seepage on the sprag hold on Cherokee Lane. Stuff under the roof (the low starts) looked minging though...

As of 12:30... Traverses mostly condensed - all footholds wet there. Kudos wall fine unless you're doing something with a foothold 20cm off the bottom - where it's damp. Pretty good conditions for Kudos wall tbh - 20 degrees light wind cloud cover.
Suspect X will be wet (didn't check) as its sheltered/tree covered like he trav area at Rubicon. I would guess (guess) that most of the tor is fine except for the depths of the cave...

You're right that the Tor is dry all bar the cave but there is no breeze and it's super greasy, you start sweating just putting your boots (why do I still call them boots?) on and by the time you've greased off you're positively soaking. A few hardy souls are persevering but you probably have better ways to waste your time.

Yesterday pm kudos wall bone dry, traverse wall dry but half of it above a lake. X was mostly dry too, but would need a brush on most things.

Went for a look at Rubicon yesterday just to see what all the excitement is about over the early lime call.
The traverses wall was condensed out and the ground under it was muddy.
Kudos wall was dry. A bit damp in the Johnny G/Bigger Belly pocket but apart from that, all fine. Slightly muddy underfoot but not enough to cause any issues. It was almost too warm when the sun came out!

Not sure about Rubicon specifically but the Tor was in full agreement with your limeometer yesterday.

Went to Rubicon. Kudos wall ok and drying. Traverses all gopped out and minging. Apparently the tor was all wet this morning/lunchtime. Weather was clearing so may be some joy in the exposed bits but overall unfavourable.

Only bit of dry rock I could find in the Peak today... Everything dry on Kudos except low right variations... on another note, does anyone know the reason for the work taking place at the mill side of the 'lake'? Couldn't believe it when I saw it today!

Micro hydro scheme. Turbines in the new building down near the mill - and the inlet and pipe will run under the leat that runs next to the path.

It was lovely there on Sunday night and early Monday morning.
Often last autumn, on a Sunday morning, there was all sorts of garbage left but yesterday when I was resting I had a good hunt for rubbish - nada. Two very small pieces of electrical tape, probably off a quick draw or two. No finger tape, biscuit wrappers, fag ends or chewing gum.
It was my first visit this year and it was heartwarming to see.

yes, kudos wall is dry. everything under the roof looks dry from a distance but isn't. (The traverses etc). Caviar is wet, but the routes between that and Kudos are all dry. Hope that helps.

Was there yesterday. Bit damper than at the weekend, but all climbable. Had a plastic sheet out under the left hand end (Debris Groove) to keep the mat clean. Right hand side (Porthole Traverse) was dry next to the wall but muddy about a metre or two out - just enough space to fit your pads in.
