Title: Pimp My Pumpkin
Post by: GCW on October 28, 2007, 11:10:19 pm
OK, since I'm shit at bouldering and Houdickweed is better at PowerBalls than I am, my competitive streak has boiled over.
Pumpkin Carving.  Let's see your efforts.  Here is mine from this year:

Please note this witch is slim and adequately proportioned.  Fit lassie apart from the nose.
I suspect this will be limited to all the Dads on here.

Nice one GCW. Best I've seen. You're bound to get some Dad-points for that.
I'm just happy to be able to do a slightly better carving than an unsupervised 7 year old with a blunt spoon.
Any tips on tools, techniques and last minute training?

I used a metal kebab skewer for a lot of it, nearly went through my hand a couple of times though. Beware. There's whole websites devoted to this, I was looking to try something harder this year, something where you don't just carve straight through but aim to get different shades, however i'm loathed to pay someone for patterns that i'm likely screw up.

Is the use of power tools considered to be cheating in the world of competitive pumpkin carving? Or is it just about how impressed/happy the kids are?

I might try that bat one you've posted, I'm almost certain that the pics on that site are big enough to make some kind of a pattern from after a bit of playing with edge detection.

Due to a complete lack of inspiration and time constraints I've gone pretty old-skool this year:

It's currently very light so I'm struggling to get a lit-up photo, but I will try and remedy this later.

Come on Paul, show us what you've got.

Yeah leprechaun was the other insult I received as well as being verbally abused by some youths wielding cans of special brew.

I think filling it with a flammable liquid and igniting that would be a lot more impressive. Or filling it with petrol, allowing it to soak in, then fireworking it.

Tried the firework bizzle in Y2K07. Average pumpkin, put a bit banger in, fizzed, sparked, exploded, pumpkin slightly singed. Put remaining 3 bangers in all together, fizzed, sparked, banged, lid of pumpkin fell off slightly blackened. Need more explosives fo sho.

Right, it's that time of the year again and as the missus nephew and niece are coming to ours for a Halloween party this weekend, I'm keen for some pumpkin action. As UKB seems to produce some pretty fly results in the past, any hints and tips?

Here is this years effort. It's pretty much a variation on last years attempt which still needs some tweaking and fine carving to finish off but I thought a few piccies might inspire increased productivity from the UKB massive.
Anyway the pictures:
I don't have any tea-lights to show it lit up yet as I'm at the in-laws and they don't appear to have any, I'll sort some tomorrow. The turnip carving is not just a random vegetable hacking, the in-laws live on the Isle of Man and instead of Halloween they have Hoptunay (sp?) which is basically Halloween for cheapskate island dwellers where you carve a turnip instead of a pumpkin. Obviously this glaring opportunity to mock the in-laws heritage was far too tempting to miss. Pumpkins rool, turnips suk.

GCW what has an evening of cheap lager produced this year? I'm guessing PaulB won't be offering anything this time round but surely some of the recent fathers could step into the breach?

Both carved by my own fair hand. Turned out much better than I thought it would.

.... all with a small kitchen knife. Next Year I am investing in a dremel though.

This is mine lit up, I sent the wife out to take the photo as I have the snuffles so blame her if it looks shit. Actually I need to thin the fleash of the eyes a bit more and clear the nose holes from behind to allow more light through and it could do with another couple of tea-lights in it (or a torch). Also looks better when viewed from slightly below, which is why we've put it on the floor

I expect to see the results on here in a few days.   ;D

A great time with the missus nephew and niece was had carving pumpkins on Saturday. The templates were a bit big for the pumpkins of we had, so we tried to draw them free-hand then carve them. The one we did of the bat looked awesome out trick-or-treating as it looked like the Batman symbol projected onto the wall. I was also a bit gutted as when showing them to her parents the next day, the missus' niece (describing mine) said, "This one's a witch, it's not very good, but anyway......"  :'(

Unfortunately, my broadband at home is down so no photos yet but I'll try and get them up tomorrow.

Thanks again Magpie! (Said niece was also a bit gutted there was no Peppa Pig template and the missus attempts to do a Peppa Pig on a pumpkin were woeful.)

I've watched a friend in the uni climbing club go round tescos whilst snacking on a pack of ready ham. When he's done with it he pops it back on a shelf. He takes his steaks and expensive treats to the self checkout and puts it all through by weight as onions (although apparently carrots are sometimes cheaper. You have to check according to season). "Victimless crime" he squawks as he tucks into a nice ribeye.

When plagiarising it's generally an idea to do it better than the original   :P

Well done making the effort though, there's a distinct lack this year!!

I did a pretty simple Jack-O-Lantern this year as we ended up with seven children and 9 adults descending on our little terraced house - mayhem. Turns out the as we don't have children ourselves, our house idsn't very kid-proof. Unfortunately, I didn't get a photo of my pumpkin. I might take one tonight (if it's not gone manky) and post it up.
