How bad has it been raining there and what is like to be dry Sat or Sun??
-
Probably not great, could be lucky tomorrow but personally i wouldnt chance it. Although there is always the woods :great:
-
I did chance it! Went to Doveholes which was a bit of a long shot given it's sheltered and soft rock, but I was prepared to about turn if it was too dodgy. Was actually in fine nick, had been sunny all morning so 90% dry. Bit warm for the slopers but pretty good fun.
-
good going! i did think by late morning today some places would be ok with how clear the sky was, although i imagine there will be a fair bit of seepage around.
-
Any word from this weekend, word.
-
I'm up north on Friday. Is Kyloe my
best only choice since it's meant to be mild for a couple of days and snow will be melting? Does anyone know if the roads are clear?
And lastly, does the Northern Soul block at Hepburn take a while to dry? I can't remember what the tree coverage is like.
Thanks all.
-
Quite a few trees around northern soul, did you go? If yes, how was it? The main wall (from bad company to hitchhikers) at kyloe is good in pretty much any conditions.
I'll not be in the county in the next few weeks as i'm off to loch lomond so might have a session at dumbarton if the conditions there are any good, then the lakes a week later, so it'll be some fun on a dripping bowderstone.
-
Update anyone?? Got a good drying forecast today, will some exposed crags dry out enough??
-
Thanks benj_d. I decided not to risk it and just went for a walk up to Shaftoe, which was the wettest and iciest I've ever seen it, despite it being hella windy. I'll probably have a look up Hepburn next week so I'll report back if I do.
If Shaftoe is any kind of representation of conditions elsewhere then I'd say it'll be hard to find dry rock today.
-
Mr Savage has been around a few crags this last week, there's a thread on UKC.
"I can't go into any more details as I'm still traumatised, but as expected, to cut a long story short, there's nothing dry in Northumberland. "
was his comment about a trip to Simonside after the thaw set in.
-
LOL, Simonside wouldn't be my first choice at this time of year ;)
Was hoping today's sun/wind combo would do something but it doesn't sound that promising...
-
This too. I've heard of 3" west of newcastle, is the whole area blanketed?
-
I live about 10 mile south of newcastle and there is a layer of about 1cm.
-
Was at Kyloe on Sunday, most of the problems on the main wall are dry, except croach tiger as the water was running down the crack, but rock was feeling pretty damp.
-
Hepburn:
Mostly nice and dry today around the main area. However, if you are going for northern soul/prep h which most will be ;D they were really damp friday gone.
-
Anyone got an update for what is gonna be prime tomorrow??
Don't worry you can tell me not to climb damp sandstone if it's been raining too much, I won't go all Andi"I'vebeenclimbing8yearsgetme"E on your asses....................
-
Exactly the same question for this weekend - am gagging to get out and it seems like the best option??
-
Minty yesterday but miserable today. 1cm of slush/snow stuff right down to the beach. I would guess it will be a back bowden/ kyloe in day tomorrow.
-
Ditto for this weekend?? Will the wind be enough to keep Queens dry???
-
not had the rain that the peak has had, just wind. Beautiful today and light winds, cant see why anywhere will be wet.
Queens will be bloody freezing though.
-
Cheers!
Everywhere was bloody freezing in the wind. Queens reported as "mildly moist" before the rain started there.
-
Ey oop,
Anyone got any idea how much snow is kicking about in Nhumberland at the mo? There was quite alot in a photo I saw of there the other day!
Prob be looking at Kyloe-in as a first choice, obviously this is in the trees, but would snow (if there is any!) affect it much?
Cheers
-
I was 10 miles from Kyloe today and there was only a dusting of snow on the hills, all the roads and lowland were clear. Shouldn't have affected the main area of Kyloe I'd have thought.
-
Estimate for Queen's on Wed, given this forecast: http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/uk/nw/carlisle_forecast_weather.html (http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/uk/nw/carlisle_forecast_weather.html) ??
-
i would wear waders for the walk in
-
Should be fine, wind is a straight southerly though so will likely only be rabbit stone catching a breeze (probs an advantage at this time of year), with 2 dry days it'd only be dewy-damp that could spoil things.
i might nip over myself if i can shift this cold.
-
Anyone know what it's like up there at the moment? I'm supposed be to heading up for the week tomorrow but I'm keen to know if:
a. I'm likely to be able to get there by car?
b. Anything will be climbable?
Cheers.
-
I am currently in a hotel next to Newcastle airport, the sky is 100% cloud and ever so slightly damp drizzle in the air.
We ve just come via Goldsborough which as a total iceout, the mist/fog/drizzle had frozen directly onto the crag, the road was death...
Thankfully not like this up here. All major roads ok. Check Yr.no and look at the webcams, also at the bootom of your selected area should be web cams.
May go for a walk at shaftoe in a sec, can let you know after what it is like.
:)
-
Great info - cheers.
-
Ok never made it to shaftoe crag, got within a few miles and then low cloud turned to steady drizzle so we ducked into a cosy looking public house with a log fire. So i guess this does not really help..
I can let you know what its like when i wake up in the morning if you want.
-
No worries. We'll probably head up anyway as got accommodation booked for the week.
Useful to know that the roads etc. are OK and we'll keep out fingers crossed for the crag. Thanks again.
-
Good info Jordan. More reports would be welcome. Hope the log fire is nice, man I would like one in my flat right now.
-
We have not had a flake of snow but its been pretty damp nasty weather. Not the best for the crags drying out.
I guess the usual suspects of kyloe and back bowden will give something. Its hovering about zero at the minute and forcast is ok, but not much wind.
-
The fire was awsome thanks. One them middle of the room jobbies with the chimney suspended above it. V cosy indeed. Can you imagine how good it would be to have that in your house!!
Anyway, dry in newcastle this morning, not too windy but total cloud cover up in the sky.
-
Same today. Damp. Drove to Goat's Crag. Didn't even get out of the car. Ratho was dry. Perked up at the end of the day.
-
Most of Bowden was dry yesterday. The left hand end was too damp to bother with, but just about everything from working class along to the cave and on rightwards was dry
-
Looks like the County has the best chance of a dry day tomorrow, but it's going to be a bit breezy (strong south-westerly). I'm assuming Bowden/Back Bowden will be a bit wild in the wind, so is Kyloe likely to be dry and more sheltered? Any other suggestions in the same area?
-
Bowden is very exposed to the wind, but Back Bowden is another story, gets a lot of shelter being just over the brow of a hill, and having the plantation in front of it. Best bet if you are in doubt is to park as for Back Bowden, have a quick trot down to Child's Play sort of area and if the wind is too brutal, head back over to Back Bowden.
-
I thought a lot of the plantation had been cleared or was that just the trees close to the crag (sorry, haven't been to Back Bowden for years)?
-
Yeah, but not totally, only about 30ft (?) from the crag. still gets sun and light in, but is a good windbreak.
-
Back Bowden is pretty open now and it it can be bloody wild in any form of westerly, if it's strong enough then it will just rake down the valley like my post-curry farts around my bawbag *.
Hepburn is the good option, Kyloe In should be mint too. There are a few more sheltered areas in Shaftoe (e.g. Southern bit) but a long way between them. There's a slight chance of Doveholes being okay but the wind can often sneak in the gap in the trees.
Very few other places as the only ones that don't face some direction of west are mostly routes-only (Jack Rock, Simonside (actually there is some non-westerly bouldering here but you'd get blown off the walk-in), Callaly, Thrunton, etc).
Edit: * - Bouldering! (http://vimeo.com/31020655) last third of this shows Back Bowden not being sheltered from Westerlies.
-
Looks like mint conditions! Depending which forecast you believe wind is only about 20 mph or so and W (or some say NW).
Apart from the stuff in the woods, isn't Hepburn pretty exposed? Was baltic last time we were up there.
-
Met Office has 20mph with gusts up to 40mph. Either way, we're going to give it a try tomorrow morning - Bowden or Kyloe, I think. Thanks for the info.
-
Surely Kyloe
Unless you have tent pegs/guy-lines for your pads

I'm a complete County Novice, but when I was up there just after Xmas it was quite sheltered at Hepburn.. The woods below break up the wind... Well I could stand up there unlike at Bowden!
-
Can any locals advise on current conditions? Forecast looks reasonable for tomorrow/Saturday...
-
Currently a cool breeze and some lovely sunshine in Durham, don't know if that helps.
-
Anywhere likely to be in nick tomorrow? BBC and met office seem to disagree about whether it rained this afternoon in Berwick or not
-
In bamburgh at the mo, and believe me... it rained.....all day! Dry now though and very breezy so maybe the exposed venues will dry off. Will update first thing in morning.

-
Bright and sunny this am, very breezy, though looks to be a northerly. Tarmac drying off fast.

-
Thanks Sam. I'll go for a look at something north facing this afternoon
-
Anyone been to Kyloe-in recently? The forecast is good for tomorrow and was thinking about heading up there. It should be dry right?
Thanks in advance for any reply. I bow down to your greater knowledge.
-
According to faceache knowledge, is wet as a very wet thing (as are the bowdens etc), not worth the visit.
-
If anyone cares... Tried shaftoe this afternoon, half bone dry and half sopping wet just depended on sun exposure.
-
Thinking of going to Hepburn tomorrow. Anyone been out recently? Guess northern soul area will be wet but maybe the main area has had a chance to dry.
-
Can anyone advise if its worth a trip down from Fife to the County tomorrow AM or to leave it until Sunday when conditions sound excellent?. Forecast overnight suggests heavy rain dying out some time late morning, with very light westerly breeze - venue likely to be Shaftoe or Bowden Far End but I have no idea if the rock may not be dry enough to prevent damage or excess wear so wanted local/regulars advice :-\
Cheers, H
-
Personally I would leave it until Sunday if you have the option but if you decide on Sat I would totally avoid Bowden, heavy rain is forecast tonight and the rock there is trashed as it is.
Woods is probably the best bet but Shaftoe might be a good one since there is stuff facing all directions.
-
Cheers mate, we are going to pop down early on Sunday to be sure its dry :2thumbsup:
-
Thinking about heading out tomorrow. Lovely sleet just now in Edinburgh making me think again. Anyone more local able to share some weather beta?
-
Quality now but I'm heading south though to slipstones!
-
Thanks andi_e t'was indeed minty. Don't think I have enough posts to wad anyone yet.
-
Anyone got any word of conditions for either Kyloe's or Bowden's? I've found myself at home, discovered a bus that heads up that way, and am itching to get out.
-
Bowdens both completely sopping as of 10 mins ago. Not even any chalk left on any of the cave holds. Kyloe will be too. Looks like fog has slithered down the crags and there is not a breath of wind or a dry hold to be found. Shitbags :(
-
Bollocks! Cheers anyway. I'm home for the next month, there's got to be at least a couple of dry days up that way in that time. Surely.
-
yep will confirm that, just got back from kyloe and it was buggered :(
-
Anyone hit Bowden today? Tempted to try catch a bus out in the morning and walk, but it means an early start.
-
has anyone been recently, hows are the crags looking? Will it be worth the drive up this weekend?
cheers
John
-
Been pretty poor up here for the last week or so, had a lot of rain over the last few days too it's probably not worth it tbh.
-
Any word on what today has been like around bowden and the like, hoping to head up tomorrow
-
Bowden will probably be wet or too damp to climb without damaging it more. It'd be pretty windy in any case. Some stuff at backers will be dry though, Hepburn woods could be too, although I've heard that trivial pursuits boulder is a bit wet so best avoided. Kyloe will be fine as per I'd imagine.
-
Damn, I was hoping the wind might blow bowden dry. I might need to run to kyloe instead then, hopefully the bus is on time so I get a couple of hours daylight.
-
Bowden, back Bowden and kyloe dry Monday & Tuesday but front Bowden out due to not been able to stand up in the wind never mind climb on Monday.
The woods had a few damp patches but only really crouching tiger not climbable, the rest was minty.
It rained this morning and has been a bit damp all day but no rain since about 10am and decent wind so the woods will be fine.
-
Kyloe in marginally damp today, most of the walls higher up had a layer of overlying condensation, some drizzle throughout the late afternoon.
-
Hoping for Hepburn woods tomorrow noon, does anyone think it will be dry?
-
Looks a decent forecast but its raining at the minute and been damp most of the day.
Could be touch and go. Later the better I would say.
-

Cheers, may opt for Bowden, although really keen to get back on northern soul and try trivial pursuit.
-
Thinking of making my first trip to t'county this weekend. What would be the best venue for a good spread of 6's and low 7's that is most likely to have dried out a bit... Kyloe-in perhaps?
Ta
-
I'm no county expert but Shaftoe or Hepburn would probably fit the bill and are both dry quicker than Kyloe I think.
-
If the forecast stays as it is all week the Kyloe bowden area would be your best bet. Shaftoe will be freezing and Hepburn would be a disappointment for your first county trip.
Sat forecast for snow/rain but not heavy so Kyloe in and Back bowden will be the first bet. Sunday looks a good Bowden day.
Loads of 6-7s at all of them.
The wind is forecast from the east so off the top of the crag at the above, could be teeshirt weather.
-
Thanks both, is there a dumby.info/lakesbloc equivalent for these areas online somewhere? The best I can find is the lists on ukc and here
http://thenmc.org.uk/onlineguide/index.php?v=5&s=3&sid=5&id=54 (http://thenmc.org.uk/onlineguide/index.php?v=5&s=3&sid=5&id=54)
-
I would be amazed if you can even find Kyloe in crag with either of them, never mind work out the problems.
You need to get the guide.
You could risk it and just turn up, especially at Kyloe and Bowden, but its very quite and you may find yourself alone, no one seems to go outside up here any more.
-

Maybe because it is shit climbing on damp rock

You need to get the guide.
Or get Grimer's Boulder Britain Guide as an investmnet, enough info to get you there and onto the better (known) problems.
-
Anyone make it out this weekend? Is there much snow lying? We binnned our return trip to Hepburn scheduled for yesterday because the forecast didn't look good enough to warrant a 2hr drive down from over the border
Forecast appears to be more snow this week and assume ths will effect the access to most crags as they are off minor roads??
Cheers
-
Very damp at Shattoe on Saturday. It's now belting it down with snow in Durham and presumably northwards too.
-
Sleet and snow all night but didnt settle, very very wet. Presently snowing heavily and starting to settle, i am right on the coast so i guess it will be thicker inland.
My guess is forget it for a good few days.
-
Cheers both
Shame about the prognosis for the crag conditions, but as expected really; looks like TCA this weekend for us
-
A few of us are supposed to be heading up this weekend, understand there's been a fair amount of snow, what's the chances of anything being climbable?
-
...especially any reports re: Hepburn, (and for me at least) specifically the state of Northern Soul!
-
Now that's optimism, I was just hoping KitW would be ok. Reports say nearly a foot of snow down. Can take a shovel and brush though if it'd be of any use
-
Yesterday was possibly the worst weather i have ever seen up here, horizontal sleet (although the quantity of this means slush would be a better description.
Overnight there has been 2 inches of snow at sea level.
Its all due to thaw this weekend so i would go somewhere else as i really think you will be lucky to climb.
-
It's also just started sleet/snowing again in Durham.

-
Its looking like a nice day tomorrow. Anywhere likely to dry out quckly where i wont damage the rock after it has had a few weeks of soaking up all that misserable rain?
-
Anyone get out at the weekend? Was thinking of maybe heading to Kyloe tomorrow, forecast is windy and dry.
-
In case nobody replies with first-hand knowledge, the facebook told me that Kyloe In was fine and dry today.
-
Sweet! Cheers :great:

As in completely dry....?
-
Kyloe completly dry (main section) today, great friction. Heard from others Back Bowden was totally soaked, even under the roofs!!
-
Anyone one know what kyloe is like, heading down tomorrow..

Don't think Goldsborough Carr is technically in t' County but any chance anyone knows what the roads are like up there at the mo? Booked into a cottage in Middleton in Teesdale for the bank holiday weekend and wondering whether it's worth taking a couple of pads?
-
I had heard that Weardale got a good amount of snow fall last weekend this was from the Ski club which is based a bit north and west from there. Might be a bit of an epic walk in .
The county had hardly a flake and there is no snow on the ground, plus its been pretty dry. You could have climbed on all the northern crags last weekend (kyloes/bowden/hepburn) plus the easterly winds are blowing over the tops of the west facing crags so your out of the wind.
All the roads are clear as well.
-
Thanks dude...
-
A "good amount" of snow is understating it a bit for weardale / teesdale. They got dumped on big style, and drifting hasnt helped. Most of the minor roads are only just passable; for goldsborough, you'd better have a 4x4.......
-
Has anyone been to Kyloe or Bowden in the last few days? Are the conditions ok?
Cheers
John
-
AS per my previous post there has not been a lot of snow up here. I live right on the coast an there is nothing. Cheviot is white but thats it. Its been pretty dry other than a few light snow showers
My guess is it will be minty.

Any idea how Hepburn woods will be tomorrow? Bit of snowfall here in Chester Le Street at the moment..
-
Not snowed here other than a few little showers. Still pretty dry and cold. Winds dropped as well.
It would be worth a try if the weather is ok. If not somewhere would be ok.
You a Chester lad, do i know you?
I grew up in lumley and went to park view.
Gav Ellis.
-
Come down to Yorkshire with me, Si and Toby tomorrow Ben!

Haha, i lived in Lumley for about ten years and also went to park view. Only started climbing just after i left school, i'm 22 now. You may know Micky Stainthorpe?? I used to live round the corner from him all before i started climbing..
Come down to Yorkshire with me, Si and Toby tomorrow Ben!
Thanks for the offer Andy, think i am very tempted by Hepburn but if not Kyloe-in will probably be fine as long as there's no seepage.
-
Have known Micky since before he could walk. I climbed with his dad.
Left park view in 87 so a bit before your time.

Only 20 years before me then ha.
Update-
Hepburn: about a foot of snow!! Brushed of off northern soul but don't know how soon it will be in good nick, there was seepage too.
Kyloe in: pristine :)
-
Anyone been to Shaftoe recently?
Thinking of heading over and wondering if the I'll just spend all my time being lost in bracken jungle.
-
I was at Shaftoe on Sunday, Bracken isn't that bad really.
Anybody been to Queens Crag recently. I have heard it takes a 'long' time to dry and should be avoided in the autumn/winter.. is this true?
-
Queens will be fine. It's hardly rained for months. Not going in the winter is more due to it being bloody freezing. North facing and windy.
Been to kyloe today and all bone dry.
-
Anyone know how well things will dry out this week? Mid-week forecast is good plus lots of wind, edinburgh soaking today tho...??
-
Has there been any snow up that way? Trying to decide on a venue for today...
-
Post in wrong section, please delete!
-
Does anyone know the status of the puddle under the cave problems/Sprung at Bowden?
