You MUST get hold of Swollen Members - Armed To The Teeth (http://www.juno.co.uk/ppps/products/371867-01.htm?highlight=SWOLLEN MEMBERS ARMED TO THE TEETH). It is f***ing fantastic. Swollens' previous albums (Balance, Bad Dreams, Heavy, Monsters In The Closet & Black Magic) have all been great but this is the next level for sheer dopeness. The beats are so PHAT they make Sloper look anorexic, and then you get to track 13 - Flyest and holy f***ing bass it's outrageous (don't listen to this unless you have a good system it's a waste). Only downside is that the lyrics are less creative and more gangsta than before but the sheer phlava and catchy choruses make up for it. It's pretty much like Swollen have incorporated the best bits of Ludacris and Eminem. I've just started the 4th play of the CD in a row....just get it okay.

Personally I'm a fan of east coast / break sampling bizniz and got a bit stuck in the mid to late 90's, but anyone remotely interested in hip hop should get this entire collection downloaded and listened to, it's a proper goldmine of quality: The Rub: History of Hip Hop (http://www.itstherub.com/?cat=15)
just follow the blog down all the way back to 1979, all downloadable.
It's also well worth getting on soundcloud and seeking out some stuff, then getting onto other stuff as a result - bit like Facebook in the sense of suggesting stuff you might like based on what you already checked.

So I got this. 30 seconds into track one I had pretty much decided I wasn't going to like it. As you say yourself; Eminem, gangster. Its too glocks and ho's for me.
Unbeliveably its obvious that Limp Bizkit has influenced hip-hop. I'm not aware of their other stuff so I can't qualify what you've said about their form but your analysis of this album is accurate. I gave it a chance and actually quite like a lot of it, easy listening hip-hop if you filter out what they're saying. Catchy, phat beats, quite fun really.
You set yourself up though "all hip-hop fans".
Its not really my thing. Post Limp Bizkit, post eminem, post good.

Blimey it's taken me ages to get round to replying to this thread...
...for the hip-hop arriviste, I'd say that the main advice is to bear in mind that - how shall I put this - it would seem that quality control isn't generally at the forefront when making a hip hop album!
As a result, one finds that there are very few solid gold (5 mics as The Source would say) classic albums of the genre, rather there are numerous albums out there with a lot of average stuff in exchange for the odd flash of brilliance.
In an attempt to qualify my point, let's take Nas for example - first album (Illmatic) back-to-back classics and widely regarded as one of the best albums of all time, let alone debuts.
Contrast with his output since, which is patchy to say the least. "I Am", for example, is mainly filler but contains the amazing "Nas Is Like" (produced by DJ Premier) and one of my favourite "storytelling" hip hop tracks in "Undying Love".
Anyway, I'm chuffing on. Recommendations:
Laid back, "conscious" flava:
Common (aka Common Sense) - Be and Like Water For Chocolate
Hi-Tek and Talib Kwali - Reflection Eternal
Mos Def - Black on Both Sides and The Ecstatic
Little Brother - The Minstrel Show
Jeru Tha Damaja - Wrath Of The Math

Got Dagger Mouth, it is good, closer to older Swollen Members styles than to Armed To The Teeth (which apparently is their less well-reputed album, I think it is awesome even if it is not typical Swollen). Not as good as Balance / Bad Dreams, close to Black Magic though.

Agree with loads of the previous posts, particularly 'Mark B and Blade - The Unknown' as a brilliant album (and British).
And even though it's pretty corny, 'Snoop Dogg - Doggystyle' is an all time classic.

It all kicked off with New York DJs playing the 'break' bit of the same record repeatedly across 2 turntables, to keep the crowd dancing. The man holding the mic then just did some rhyming to get a bit of crowd feedback, and off it went.

There was also the 'rap' element, that developed into a bit more than talking over records - a creative and 'freestyle' way of expression and enacted in street 'battles' in which rappers would strike 'blows' to each other's cred in 16 bars patterns.. the late Notorious B.I.G was one of the best

Nowadays though, slightly tougher one, and hip hop has massively diversified since inception on the late 70's, but for me the principles are the same and reached the peak in '94 - it's a style characterised by a 'break' - i.e. a looped drum pattern, generally comprised of a 'sampled' series of drum sounds from other records, possibly of the soul/disco/funk, but also rock or folk, genre. * Anything sounding good with a catchy section. Often the 'breakdown' bit of a tune, hence 'break', resequenced to make a new tune

Combine this with a bassline of similar provenance, and mostly a vocal track in a rhyming, non harmonious style, generally 'conscious' in a political or social sense, or just bragging about oneself, money, knob, shagging, hardness/badman qualities and you're about there. Maybe a bit of scratching which apparently originated from a performance of Rockit by Herbie Hancock (Grandmixer DXT done the scratching) and is a definite Hip Hop motif.

DJ Kool Herc is the guy usually credited with starting the playing of breaks at block parties, (and with playing Apache which was a cover of a Shadows song) not just 'New York DJs', and specifically it was at parties in the Bronx, in the Bronx River Houses Project (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bronx_River_Houses), right there (http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=1520+Sedgwick+Avenue,+New+York,+NY,+United+States&aq=0&sll=53.800651,-4.064941&sspn=12.396752,41.748047&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=1520+Sedgwick+Ave,+Bronx,+New+York+10453,+United+States&ll=40.847288,-73.924685&spn=0.003871,0.010192&t=h&z=17)
And when I mentioned a bunch of 'relatively calm guys in the 70s', that was wrong, the Bronx was pervaded by gang allegiance and violence / murder, and Afrika Bambaataa took the lead in creating the Zulu Nation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universal_Zulu_Nation), which was a driving force in bringing people together in a positive way with hip hop as the common bond.

I was having a think on the bus home from work, flicked through 46 Primo produced tracks and thought 'these all sound like Primo tracks always sound' which is great in some ways but only when an amazing MC is present, and realised that it's only this year that I've been actively looking for new hip hop since now I don't have so much time or equipment to play any of my funk records - it was off the back of funk that I got into hip hop in the first place due to the sampling bizniz. And I thought about the last more modern styled tracks that really impressed me, I could only remember 2, from a couple of years ago (when I was last doing the odd radio show with some real DJs who bought records and played them) and they're both UK artists:

Back to the battles (or at least freestyles), no idea if it's still on (I've only ever heard them from the compilation albums of the freestyles) but there's a lot of stuff on youtube from 'the wake up show' with Sway and King Tech off the radio in San Francisco, they did loads of interviews with big names like Biggie, KRS One, RZA, Eminem etc. and always demanded that these MCs 'catch rec' by standing up and freestyling over whatever beat King Tech chucked out. Some of them turn out stuff that's obviously in their 'freestyle repertoire' and I've heard the same rhymes in different places, but one guy that always impressed me was Supernatural - so on point with the freestyle that he had to be tested using random subjects, and he always kills it - has his own charm in terms of style and stuff but I love the spontaneity and sheer skill of the guy:

Think we covered this on twitter over t'weekend but it's on every Thursday downstaiors at The Social, Little Portland Street from 6.30pm onwards...it is always ram up in there nowadays so getting in early is essential, especially if you want to perform...apparently all 30 or so slots were taken by 19:58 the other night.

The late 1990s and early noughties were a rich period for hip-hop in the North West, with Grand Central Records, Friends and Family and Fat City Records forming a Holy Trinity of new-school cool. One of the leading lights from this era was Aim. Record shop owner, music enthusiast and Hacienda goer turned poacher with an MPC, Aim’s debut Cold Water Music served notice of a musician capable of sampling esoteric and forgotten sounds and crafting them into an atmospheric soundscape that stretched the listeners emotions.
His follow up Hinterland built on this blueprint. With a bigger budget and a burgeoning reputation that allowed him to collaborate with the likes of Diamond D, Souls of Mischief and Stephen Jones, the album’s ambitions are best summed up by the tracks Fall Break and Vipco; grand cinematic pieces that to this day remain crisp and distinctive. His third release, Flight 602, was released on his own label ATIC Records, and was his final act as a solo artist before he vanished into the musical gloaming, contending himself with the challenges of label management and producing artists on his roster.
After this period in his very own hinterland, Aim is back and to coincide with the release of his Best of LP, Drum Machines and VHS Dreams, we got together to discuss his Northern roots, VHS memories and his beloved MPC. Aim was also kind enough to contribute his 1993 mixtape Blunted Volume 2 to our Bonafide Beats series. A mixtape in the truest sense, Bonafide Beats #52 is a primer for a musician with impeccable taste when it comes to what goes on the boombox.
I recorded this mix in 1993 and it has pretty much all my favourite hip-hop tracks up to that point. So Nas, Casual, Kool G Rap, I’d love to work with any of them

That's awesome- I loved Rawkus- I got into Soundbombing when that first came out and bought two of all the records on it (apart from Co Flow who I never rated and Universal Magnetic which I couldn't find a good copy of) when I started DJing. Like every record I ever bought, I still have them.
It's fascinating how the label changed in such a short period- it changed with hip-hop I guess. I sorted my CDs out the other week and was amazed to see the difference between the sleeves (and content) of Lyricist Lounge Vol 1 & 2!

Yet another useful method is to use youtube-dl (https://rg3.github.com/youtube-dl/) which works not just for YouTube, but also Vimeo, Soundcloud and many other streamed sources. Also allows you to download playlists too, which is considerably quicker than using soundflush.com.
One day I'll get round to sorting out the Soundcloud plugin for MPD and I'll be able to simply play the tracks directly from the playlists I create (at least when listening to music at home).
Sorted that and I can now play Soundcloud playlists on my RaspberryPi streaming device :2thumbsup:

For you cultured lot I'd say the following are of particular interest: Aspects - great west country hip-hop with top wordplay, Dalek - mentioned earlier in this thread, proper deep and dark, DJ Format - classic down to earth stuff, Oddjob - bet not many people have this, quirky and deep stuff, Ready D - classic South African hip-hop mix CD with a huge variety of flavas. Oh and the dubstep is well fucking proper too, no skrillex-style mobile phone screechstep here.
