Title: Help with visiting Arrakis
Post by: shark on March 09, 2024, 11:44:00 pm
Anybody been? It looks like getting around by worm is the fastest and most convenient form of public transport but I’m confused how multiple people can embark and disembark. Anyone help?  :worms:

I'm glad you have started a thread for this important question.

I would furthermore like to know what worm fuel economy is like. If I summon one, what do they run on? They seem to be plentiful and respond very reliably to thumpers, so I assume there are plenty of locations to fill up?

Anyone know who the local BMC rep is? I've seen info about great looking desert towers but have heard the landowner has a reputation for being hostile to outsiders, would be good to open up access talks.

I went a few years back. Was a lovely trip until a local bloke started hassling us, pretending I was some sort of messiah. Everything I did, however trivial, he would mutter something about how "that's exactly what the Lasagna Guy would do". Ruined the trip tbh.

Best time of year to go? Sounds pretty warm a lot of the time. Night sessions maybe best?

A recent trip I heard about by a bunch of lads from a certain rainy island area got a bit out of hand and ended up with a jihad where 61 billion people died so I'd say avoid the local "recreationals"

I love this t-shirt design but fear it's too tragically nerdy to actually wear.

Arakkis is all sandy choss, bad connies and giant centipedes, Caladan has got that pristine Squamish style granite going on.

Needs proper speakers / headphones. Anyone listening on a phone should throw it in the nearest river.

Arrakis is 88 light years away. If time or budget is tight, you might consider Perfection, Nevada.
Pros: climate and rock are pretty good
Cons: worms somewhat less domesticated.

If you're ever bouldering in Bishop, it's worth a visit to the Museum of Western Film History in Lone Pine, where they've got the actual Graboids from the film on display. Apparently, ownership of them has been retained by the film company should they wish to use them in future movies. We can but hope.

One key thing to mention is music is banned at all crags - ESPECIALLY any house, trance or techno.

The local wildlife really isn't a fan.

You could probably hitch.
Apparently it’s not fashionable anymore, but there’s a regular Guild transport run and quite a few “unofficial” carriers bringing back the orange shit they put in Pumpkin Spice Lattes…

Animal welfare question

Personally thought the baby worm was deliriously happy to be presented with so much water and was writhing around with pleasure (before the blue poison was extracted) and reclined in ecstasy.

However, it has been put to me that it was merely drowned.

What happened ?

"local grades" refers to routes graded by locals well dosed with spice. In the first few months these will feel particularly tough

Spice is aid maaaan.

IFSC are investigating it's ways to test positive for it in anti-doping measures.

They have agreed  a sclera colour check using a Dulux colour chart is the best way. Duck Egg Blue and above and you are banned.
