I'd been thinking about getting out on the grit this week.

This morning at about 6am I found myself in the garden wearing my usual y-fronts and wife-beater outfit. Normally this is a contraindication of good grit conditions. Even the BBC Weather website said it was warm.

Then I had a sign. An eight legged spider eating another eight legged spider. Well, you can't let a sign like that be ignored because of trivial stuff like the actual facts about the weather.

So, with superstitious nonsense coming out on top over sound reasoning, I set off to Burbage South for some gritstone action.

When I arrived in The Valley it felt as though the same warm, humid conditions were present. I was, by now, wearing full shorts and t-shirt, but still it seemed pretty warm

What about the fucking Sign? I thought

Clarity rushed back. By placing myself near the boulders I would be fulfilling the prophecy that tells of "the man with the head of an anaemic bear, the belly of a cow, the arse of an elephant and the skin of a Channel swimmer". With the spider cannibalism already in the bank, this would be sure to guarantee good conditions.

Did it fuck.

The man with the head of an anaemic bear, the belly of a cow, the arse of an elephant and the skin of a Channel swimmer was attacked by a swarm of carnivorous six legged insects (and you've read Leviticus!) and so actual facts again totally nullified the effect of the finest superstitious bollocks that money can buy in Heeley. I managed to climb, but only did stuff several grades below my 8B target for the day.

I'm getting my next reading done in Woodseats.

Should have gone to specsavers Rubicon

*edit*
the moral of this story is that us amateurs should leave The Calling to the experts and the people with the keys to the tortoise box

Flocks of geese migrating over the house these past two nights. It's coming...

A friend accused me on Facebook of trying to call the Grit. Obviously this would be an embarrassing DobbEgg faux pas, especially as the actual Calling is nowhere near. The above post was purely an observation of an omen. A whisper on the wind that the bugle blowing mongoose was beginning to feel restless and might soon begin to rouse from its slumber. Duh.

This raises an important scientific issue of time scales and lag time. Does the tortoise slowly open an eye and wind his neck out over a period of weeks in response to the geese flying and the cows lingering in the NE side of the field, or does it suddenly awaken with a squawk and demand the box of calling is opened?

Sounds like the outline of an article for UKC....

Felt way too hot on burbage south this afternoon/evening even with a good breeze. Great effort by Pete, can see the chalk on the holds still but its already started to seep.

It was baltic on the walk to my car after work this evening. Even beneath my £8 hunting jacket I could feel it was cold.

First dusting of snow in Scotland.

And I saw a horse with its head where it's tail should be.
