Went to stanage far left on sunday, had perfect conditions in the evening, a down jacket was definately necessary.  Never been there before but seemed as though it would be almost too cold later in the year.

I think the grit season maybe well and truly underway this weekend as it looks like it will be a reasonable amount cooler.

In my opinion the scales have significantly tipped towards the grit.

I realise that conditions are a little bit hit and miss (aren't they always in the UK - conditions too warm for grit can rear their ugly head in January from time to time if you go out of the wind and in the sun), but with careful venue choice there's been great conditions to be found for a few weeks now.  I think it's time to call the grit as its definitely a far more sensible choice than the lime now.

Was warm on the grit yesterday afternoon at Stanage Popular End but not to the point where it was too hot and everything turned into a sweaty nightmare though at my level (VS onsight) it makes less difference.

Up at Rhue bouldering - which is more like grit than gritstone is, it makes Roaches lower tier look like Font - it was entirely ambiguous: freezing cold easterly, but the rock was still warm from the sun. Beanie conditions but not biting conditions  :devangel:  :-\

It does look a bit like Font actually.  But I know what you mean.

I've been bouldering on Grit for the 8 of the last 10 evenings/days. It's been a bit too warm at times, but certain boulders are feeling ok. It's not yet time though.

Just 'cos there is lime still able to be climbed, it surely doesn't mean that the grit can't be called.  After all there are lime routes that can be done year round, just like there are grit sessions to be had year round.  Surely its a feeling rather than an exact science?  I'm all for evidence based research (fanatically so in fact), but when it comes to the calling of the grit, its something else.  Hence the annual search for three legged crows flying against the wind at sunset etc etc.

I think we need to trust JB on this. He wasn't awarded membership of the Gritstone Association of Yeomanry Showponies for nothing and we don't want another Dobbinesque cock up as happened with the Calling of The Lime recently.

People get confused every year...
People seem to be confused here. You don't need the grit to be called to climb on it. But you may find you're swimming against the tide. Once the quail-headed crow has called, the tide will turn and its all downhill.

Its a late season, so far I'm waiting on 3 of the 5 conditions.

Yeah I guess people are right to hold their horses on this one, let's wait for JB to make the announcement.  We really don't want UKB to become the pariah of the internet over this, I mean misogyny and sexism are one thing, but getting the grit calling wrong... well that's a sin of a totally different order.

Is seeing a squirrel fall out of a tree one of 'the five'? Not sure what it signifies if anything but it was pretty bloody funny.

Surely sub zero temps overnight clinch it? Had to scrape van this morning, before driving away from clear blue skies and back home. Closest I got to any grit was spotting Earl and the Barden Fell crags lit up by the sun as I drove past. Bollocks.

A frost is certainly one of the five. We're a step closer today, but it was still tops off this afternoon.

but it was still tops off this afternoon.

I woke up in Ilkley, within 700m and plain sight of the Cow and Calf (my childhod crag), to a frosty clear morning. My time was already committed to child hearding (copyright GCW) and wiping drool off the oldest relative instead of climbing. OOH that hurt.

I then ate lunch with non climbing family whilst gazing up at Rocky Valley - more pain.

Then We drove past Caley, with great views of Almscilffe; already late for the next family do (3rd birthday of obnoxious son of wife's lovely cousin) - Jesus Fucking Christ.

Birthday party finished in time for me to get the last hour of daylight on the grit.....

Oh no. No such luck. Oldest child stubs toe with no shoes on (scary and obviously painful thick flapper plus nail split) and all my time is taken up with wound cleaning.

All this added to the fact that I met Jasper two days in a row and we didn't get to become drunk together.

This sort of day usually marks the start of the grit season.

Earl was baltic until 12, then the huge number of boulderers spoiled it.

Tales of woe...

If I hadn't been to Birchens tradding today (spot the many obvious mistakes) I would have awarded you a wad point to try and anaesthetise a bit of your pain.  ;)
