26.2 miles of climbing in 24 hours
September 02, 2008, 01:16:50 am
It started as an inane pondering during the Olympics when everyone is obviously fired up for thinking they're the next human to perform the next greatest feat of human endurance. Somehow, I can't shift this one though.

The premise is to climb 26.2 miles of vertical wall in 24 hours. Is there even any point in beginning to think this might be possible? I've always wanted to perform an exhaustive feat of endurance and wonder if this could be the one given I'd like to walk around the world with a 15 year continuous techno set strapped to my Sennheisers yet aren't prepared to squander that amount of time on said feat.

If it was a grade 3 climb on a 10 metre slab and somebody did this, would you be impressed (given that's all I'd want to do - impress you)? Oh and earning some money for charity would matter quite a lot.

Should have got your arse over to Manchester last May.  The winning team climbed 15710m in 24 hours.

26.2 miles is approx. 41920 metres in 24 hours.
Which is approx 1746 metres an hour
Which is approx 29 metres a minute
Which is approx half a metre a second.
Or climb your 10 metre slab every 20 seconds.
Allowing no time for descents/rests.

You might need more than a day IMHO.

I reckon it might be possible in a 3 man team but after having a whitey from 6 back to back laps of 5+/6b+ I think you can count me out!

I would be impressed at 26 miles of ascent in 24 hours, even if it was just climbing stairs. My legs are burning just thinking about it (never mind the descent  :'( )
