Dinas Rock
March 03, 2005, 10:24:39 pm
Was having a look through Bouldering Monkeys recently. I used to go to their site to watch the fun coasteering vids, but though I couldn't find any of that stuff on their redesigned site, I found these pics of Dinas Rock instead.

Been there a couple of times, but never with a "boulderers eye"...this was *ages* ago. I remember it being steep and impressive but is there much bouldering there? Is it any good?

The easier lines tend to be polished, but the Kenelgarth roof holds potential for seme pretty hard lines.  I think Tom Starke has done some problems at the cave.

To the right of the bigger cave looked like it had potetntial too.

There's some details at swbg.co.uk.

Thanks for that - here's the link:

There's an 8b+ link on the topo - is that traverse or bloc grade?

I've seen a couple of boulderers at Dinas Rocks before......as you will probably know from the site, I am a rather shit boulderer......so anything I say should be treated with severe disdain......

The roof at Kenelgarth Wall (in the pictures) has some interesting jugs (big-ass holds I assume).....while there are a few good traverses....with a rather large gap to span about 3m up....

As has been pointed out, swbg has a topo for the wall

As for all the coasteering vids and such....they are all still on the site:

go to MONKEYING/CLIMBING....then select an area from the map....i.e. GOWER.........then click on one of the 9 areas in the GOWER map......That'll bring a page with a selection of areas/days.....each displaying pictures and video.........hope that helps

Nice site Bubba btw

At 8b+ my guess would be that it's a sport route grade.

Does anyone have an opinion on the best places to boulder on the Gower?

Did anyone find out where the 8a was?

was this the one written by chris"the flash" hamper.where he slagged off all the other climbing areas in the gower saying it was either climbing in the trench or surfing.

The Trench is at Ogmore.  Again, as with Dinas, there's scope for some extremely hard lines.

The last time i went was with you Bubbs, an interesting trip where we dossed under the main overhang in a torrential downpour and i awoke to find water flowing either side of my sleeping bag and a strange feeling of weightlessness.....
also an amusing incident with some rats i remember....

Have all the big routes been properly retro bolted now?

Just browsing through youtube and came across this. There's several other videos from the same author but wondered if his videos were exhaustive of the crag?

Is Dinas Rock as weapon as it looks? Is there an updated topo and directions for the place?

Monolith,

Those are my videos.  Dinas Rock is a very good venue with some high quality problems.  In particular, Gentle Jess (SDS) V6 and the Fat Cat Roof V9 are as good as anything I've climbed anywhere.

The videos cover the bulk of problems on the left half of the Kennelgarth cave but there are some very good (and hard) problems between the Fat Cat Roof and Launch Pad which I've yet to film.

PM me if you're in the area and I'll try to arrange a tour!

Kev

Thanks Kev.

For some reason I got it into my head that this might have been a bit closer to home than it actually is. A very good friend of mine has bouldered a lot in S Wales and will probably be able to tell me more about it. Thanks for the offer of a tour also!

I remember German Tom mentioning that he had done a couple of 8as (and possibly some harder problems as well) at a wall close to the fox hole, although this may not be the 8a you're referring to. He seemed to think it was a pretty good area. The problems got repeated by rich simpson, so it might be worth contacting him if you want to find out where exactly the area was, if he still uses this site that is.

Tom's 8a is at a small wall near the fox hole area.  It's quite tricky to find though and Tom, who found and climbed the problems, has not produced a topo for the wall as far as I'm aware.
