heinous bulging-slopey-mantle top-outs...
July 21, 2008, 09:03:01 am
Looking for some pointers on how to top-out a bulge when you find an absence of 'holds'.

This technique is proving my downfall on a couple of problems.  I've tried both tackling directly and throwing a heel up, but in either cases i have so far found it impossible to gather enough traction to progress beyond a point.

Does it bare any resemblance to a typical mantle when there's no edge to grasp and the lower footholds in front of you and under the bulge (trying to push you off)?  Any advice on how hands/feet/body should be arranged?

(Links to video clips demonstrating such problems would be great!)

Either heel hook and rock, rock and keep rocking.  Or man up and mantel.

Often the trick is to reverse the direction of one or both hands, ie wrists pointing up slope fingers down slope. This has the effect of pivoting your upper body upwards which in turn does 2 things. Firstly it pushes your centre of gravity over your hands and secondly makes it easier getting your foot up by your hands.

Generally it pays to keep your hands near the lip and like travs says turn palms down if possible, rather than give in to the temptation of reaching further and further back.
It's often useful to initiate a topout using the heel and then change to a toe for the final rockover.

Personally I prefer to wear a Schoeller jacket, and just lie on top. Works like velcro!

:-\ perhaps practicing "muscle-ups" might help build the strength required to do the sort of moves being suggested if you find your lacking?

There's always a foothold.  Even if you have to smear on the underside of a roof, (there's probably an edge or a crack there) it can help push you out and up and over, so you're not just hauling with your triceps the whole way.

That problem is filth. Had a look when I was last there but fortunately it was wet so I had a good excuse not to try it.

I feel this is an appropriate place to commend BenF on something of a first (inasmuch as I've ever been aware of). The man has managed to wear through the heel of his rock shoe through his engagement with constant mantelling. The mind boggles, well done Ben.

Thank you Tom.  I presume this feat will now mean the end of the constant jibes and shit that I get re: "camp rock-overs" etc etc.  You know that real men rock it out.

Yer, you can say that only real men rock it out but if your girlfriend agrees that your just camp in general... Not to mention the rock overs :P

I don't know where to start in deconstructing and generally ripping your last post apart Meatball.  Suffice to say, you type like you climb.   ;)  Generally getting the job done but with minimum style points and the odd schoolboy error...
