youtube problem
May 23, 2008, 02:52:32 pm

Any ideas?

Recently, youtube videos will not play continuously. I'm not sure exactly when this started happening, but it's extremely annoying.

All videos will start to play, but will stop after a few seconds. I can the click on the bit it's stopped at, and it'll play a few more seconds and stop...etc.

It's not a connection issue, this happens whether i'm streaming the video or the whole video has already loaded.

Any ideas/solutions gratefully received.

very interesting, as I've had this happen too. I've tested a few different things to see what works.

1. The most simple option is to simply restart firefox, which usually works.
2. Update your graphics drivers.
3. I had this problem in OSX but rectified it by flashing a modded firmware to my graphics card (don't do this - but it is an option!).

I would guess that number 1 should work, but if not try 2. If neither work let me know...

Thanks :)

If option 1 is the best solution then perhaps my default set of FF tabs (56 tabs across 3 FF windows) is getting too much for my ageing PC to handle properly. I need to start using session management more effectively.

My drivers are pretty up to date afaik but i'll double check.

I've not looked into it Bubba, but I'm going to guess it's some firefox vram issue. It only occurs to me when I have 40+ tabs and I haven't closed firefox for at least 3 days. There is probably a memory leak somewhere which the closing/opening resets.

I've installed Firefox 3 RC1, cut down on the number of open tabs by using scrapbook/bookmarks/session manager and all is ok again :)

Firefox 3 is looking good now btw, i'd recommend upgrading.

The release candidate is certainly useable, and I like the new look, but some of the scripts I use aren't compatible yet so I'm stuck with 2. Hopefully within a month everything will be updated so I can get with the times.

my post count hit 1337 and said leet. I thought I'd suddently transcended the post count, but it appears not. What a shame.

You can force extensions to be compatible with RC1 but ofc this may cause unpredictable results.

Another problem.
Never had issues uploading before.  Today I have a video that uploads but then gives an error message and the upload fails.

Quote from: YouTube
The video you uploaded was too large. Please shrink it, then upload the smaller version.

Normally files that were too large would throw up an error when you hit "upload", but this spends the usual time uploading and then fails.
The file is the same format I usually use (QuickTime h.264 1280x720) and is only 16MB, so I'm a little confused.

Anyone else had problems, or any ideas what the issue is?

do they mean that your video is too large in its dimensions rather than its file size? They have that whole HQ option thing going on when you upload a vid which is 640x480, perhaps they have placed a max limit on the size of a video? I haven't checked.

I thought that too.  It worked fine yesterady evening though.
I've tried 768x576, still get the error.
I'm currently rendering it as 320x180.  Any smaller and it'll be a waste of time.  I'll let ya know what happens.

Get the same error message for a file that is an mpeg of320x180, and 11MB.  I'm confused.
Maybe I'll leave it and try again tomorrow.   :-\

Maybe "large" is the new Google-Speak word meaning "extremely well edited footage of superb climbing" - and by small they mean "less 'large'". Your video is clearly of too good a quality for youtube to accept it.
