Dave, obviously you note that you have family with you but you must try and get into the mountains at least once - to the Naranjo de Bulnes of course. The village of Poo de Cabrales on the north side of the range is a nice base and has sport climbing very close. Not Dave Andy

Dave Andy is right Dave not Andi but Andy.  The Picos is utterly fantastic, even if you manage to drive into Fuenta de to look at the mountains, its worth it.  Obviously making the walk into Naranjo de Bulnes would be even better and making an ascent one better still.  The whole area is chock full of deep gorges, huge towering faces and wide open plateau.  Wonderful Dave Ben Andy Dave.

to the Naranjo de Bulnes of course.

Wasn't there a photo of you climbing there in an OTE in the early 90's?

If I remember rightly he (and others on the rope) climbed it free at around 8a.  Free as in without aid, I'm sure it cost a fair bit for the ferry and petrol etc.

Apologies Andy if I got that wrong.  ::)

That would have been me. Yes Ben, Nick Dixon and I free climbed the Murciana route at about 8a, this would also be brilliant at E4 AO, The Rabada/Navarro is the classic on the big west face, but I haven't done that. Amistad con el Diablo on the shorter east face is also brilliant. Really starting to regret that I've never managed to get back.

Naranjo de Bulnes is pretty cool. I remember some OTE picture of you Andy with tights and a backwards cap ;)

After our ascent we went down to Cabrales and got very pissed on cider and stinky cheese.  The bar had hard core pr0n on

This cap thing was a huge baggy woolly hat holding my then very copious dreads. The photo was taken during a five day spell camping at the base with Nick, for which our provisions were one bag of rice and one bag of lentils. When we got down I celebrated by gorging on crisps and chocolate. Nick had some bran.

ps I'm sure the Rabada/Navarro will not disappoint Neil

I know I wasn't in the photo or anything, but the hat in question was not a baggy woolly cap, at least I hope it wasn't. I have spent my entire life since that pic thinking it was a beret. As an alternative young beret wearer at the time it meant a lot to me that an official wad was also sporting said head wear, and on an 8a too. Tell me it ain't so Andy, surely you are mistaken....
