false alarm - I was at work on Sun - the in day gas traders sit next to me, and the gas market went a bit crazy for a while (brittania hub shut 0900-1630) but all back up and running now - they did take 150 odd people off the flotel, but they're back now. Apparently the woman involved had a dream there was a bomb on board!

From the link above:

It appears that the whole thing was started when someone was a bit upset about a dream they had... This girl had a dream about a bomb being on board.

Nuts, but better that than Piper Alpha round#2.

I was lucky enough to watch some footage of my dad being evacuated off his gas platform on the news a couple of years ago. Mum had rung to tell us what was going on before it was on the news so I wasn't too bothered though. Basing an evacuation on a dream is a bit extreme, but when in doubt, evacuate. That is my credo.

I think I can appreciate erm, sams position.   I expect to be working rigs this year myself.

I also think Moo is right to have his mind blown.  I also think Britain is a Nanny State - has no balls, at all; displays cowardice ie:  moral, political, military, cautionary, preventionary . . .   more often than it displays bravery.  And this makes me ashamed to be British.  New Germany has more balls than current Britain.  I'm glad I'm here not in the UK - but very sad there is no slate, grit or gabbro and mostly wank fischstein.

Fuck Britain.  Britannia: you're a disgrace to yourself and your proud history.

I expect to be working rigs this year myself.

I expect to see a somewhat different interpretation of the correct and right action to this admittedly bizarre incident then.  As Idol Eyes points out, these protocols were developed in response to Piper Alpha when people burned alive because there was total confusion about what to do (e.g. adjacent platforms continued to pump gas to Alpha in spite of being able to see it burning in front of their very eyes).  The protocols are very regimented and structured precisely because we behave like irrational idiots in the event of serious and dangerous incident.

In this case the root cause was false and a product of the sorry times we live in but at least the evac worked properly.  I was on the phone to my team in Aberdeen on Sunday morning to check whether we had people on board and was worried for a couple of hours that we were about to see a disaster unfold.

Just my righteous two penneth...

So - do you think that the disturbed dreamstate of a individual is good enough reason to muster the forces of evacuation?  Just in case ?!  I'd rather hoped something a little more concrete should be required.  ie - an explosion.  The discovery of a bomb, intelligence etc.. etc..    Just because something utterly non-terrorist based happened to a rig a decade+ ago is not good enough reason to shit onesself the moment a fruitloop cries wolf, and you know that story and what happens when the wolf really appears.  It's crap.  What if?  What if?  What if?

No its not crap, and the people who work offshore are very glad that sensible people are in charge and not people like yourself who would wait for an explosion. Being on an oil rig is like being in an elevator with 5 other people and a grenade, if you wait for an explosion its too late.

I used explosion as an example of some form of evidence that a problem existed.

The evac cost 500K.  There was no issue, no-one is hurt, the company lost production because someone had a nightmare (none of which I personally care about, but someone does a great deal).

It barely matters what I think, I have no power in this case, I think what we have here is some form of cosmic joke.  I really wouldn't want to be that woman right now - any more than I'd want to be a burning corpse on the remains of an oil rig.

Rather like the airlines insisting everyone leaves their orange ladies bics in a jar before going through customs, lest some nutbar threatens to shave the crew to death . . .  Or threatens to dream about it . . .
