I thought he'd just used some dodgy old film  :P

(On a more serious note any idea what process will most likley have been used here?)

Huh?  ???, I guess its more to do with this.

I know dick all about post-processing (beyond stitching pictures together to make panoramas!).

rather than, say, boosting the colours by e.g. sliding the saturation to the right in PS (e.g. +15), he's moved it the other way. In lightroom you could achieve a similar effect by doing the same with either the vibrance or saturation sliders. he's probably boosted the contrast a bit too.

'just desaturated' was a bit misleading as if you click 'desaturate' in PS it completely desaturates all levels, whether in RGB or CMYK, effectively B&Wing the pic.

I have neither PS or Lightroom, but on a more basic level is it just tweaking colours brightness by adding more black when you desaturate and more white to give stronger colours when saturating (my simpleton's interpretation of the Wikipedia page)?

On a slightly more geeky note, I'd hazard a guess he's completely desaturated it (turning it into a B&W photo), boosted the contrast to exaggerate the shadows and highlights, the blended it back with the original to produce the final shot...

no idea on both posts above. i wonder if the original was a nice enough pic anyway though.

Probably not, longer cogitation of the composition suggests that the climber isn't defined enough because of the boulder behind his head.

Will try not to make such a faux pas again, sorry peeps.

My beef was more with the excessive shadow lightening, the guy's face in particular. To me the fact that the lighting on his face no longer tallies with the rest of the pic makes it look stuck on. Desaturation in itself I'm not so bothered about. As Cofe says, I doubt that the original isn't decent enough without such improvements though.
