Saw Helmet in Manc on Wednesday night for the first time since '94. 31 songs in 2 hours. My ears are still bleeding.

Anyone going to Black Flag this Sunday? First UK tour in 35 years!

Female black metal from Holland. I'm not the biggest BM fan but am really liking this, I think female shrieks work better in the genre!

Bit much for me that prefer things a little slower and grinding.  Loved this lot when I was a yoot, rediscovering and found these videos, great humour and great tunes... (2nd vid follows on from 1st).

Heh I am very much into the slow and grinding side, as monolithic and crunchy as possible (although I think overall my preferred genre these days is techdeath). Will check out those vids innabit  :punk:

He he!  I have no idea what tech death is!!? I played and toured with UK thrash merchants Arbitrater in the 90s and kinda lost touch with it all in the 00s.. Would Death qualify as tech death?in which case I knows what you mean.  :punk:

Death were probably regarded as the forefathers of techdeath to some degree, yeah. Stuff I like these days around that genre: Cattle Decapitation, Decrepit Birth, Origin, Cryptopsy, Shadow Of Intent, Signal The Firing Squad, Ingested (the latter three incorporating melodeath / slam / deathcore)

Actually thinking about it overall I probably just like death metal cos I like a lot of traditional stuff too. Bolt Thrower - Realm Of Chaos / 4th Crusade ; Carcass - Necrotism / Heartwork were defining albums for me (I also fucking loved Pantera and Primus). In the modern era, Behemoth - The Satanist ; Temple Of Void - Lords Of Death ; and Ingested - The Level Above Human.

Cheers Fiend.  Lots of stuff IDK and will deffo check out.  I love a bit of Death and Carcass too so maybe I will like some of these.  Did a tour supporting Bolt Thrower back in the day (lovely people), the scene was strong in Leamington Spa/ midlands!
Being a bass player I also loved a bit of Primus, still do.  I was always more of a thrasher that dabbled with the harder stuff..  So of course the big names like Pantera, Metallica, Sepultura, Megadeth, Anthrax, Slayer, Suicidal Tendencies, Sacred Reich, Testament, DRI, Voivod, Flotsam and Jetsam..  Again it’s all a bit old school though and I’m a bit behind the times...

Bruto! Sorry it took a while, here's a couple of things that might be suitable:

Track of the year for me from whenever it was, both their albums are great for proper mid-paced heaviness.

I reckon Carcass can have a strong claim to defining goregrind (Reek, Symphonies), techdeath (Necrotism), and melodeath (Heartwork), and with Surgical Steel, the comeback album. To come out with something this good after a 17 year hiatus...

One of the melodic / classic death metal bands I've liked in recent years

OTOH these guys are pretty much defining melo-death for this millennium. Totally consistent so if you like their style, they do it bloody well.

And of course there's always Amon Amarth.... ;D

I've been listening to a lot of complex tech death recently, a lot of modern slam, a lot of female-fronted hardcore.

This is none of the above. This is as straightforward and manly as fuck, and it's great. One for Brutus I think:

That’s more like it! Straight forward heavy grooves minus the noodling...  :punk:  A little disappointed by the lack of hair though.
From the above Carcass still (to my ear) seem to stand way above the others..  Will keep listening though sometimes it takes a few goes to get it.

A mere 3 days old and this is going to be one of the albums of the year. Slow methodical rhythms guide a stately procession of subterranean female vocals and soaring lead guitars, blanketed in a gentle fuzz of distortion, like having your goosebumps caressed with a saw blade. Should definitely be slow and grinding enough for you Brutus :)

For something a bit . . eh . . lighter than Fiend's suggestions. I've been really enjoying some Dogleg. Got a strong early 2000s emo vibe in the vein of Brand New and Taking Back Sunday etc.

Are you feeling edgy? Has your high school sweet heart left you? Do your parents just not understand? :2thumbsup:

And another very apt one, and a personal favourite of mine from seeing them live a year or so ago:

Some lovely nihilistic and atmospheric Black Metal for Fiend- mgla

Both albums are well worth a listen

Also on the Polish black metal theme, Batushka released another brilliant album which passed me by last year (I lost interest as there was an internal band feud, loads of shite on social media with both splits claiming to be the real Batushka, but I think we can now safely say that this one is the true Batushka)

Really enjoyed that mgla album but then I read that they’re tied up with some rather nasty bands from the NSBM side of things. I think they denied it but a lot of the dirt seems to be sticking!
