Is it worth a drive over to The Peak tomorrow
January 22, 2008, 05:20:42 pm
Hi all, just wondering if its worth my while driving over from Manchester tomorrow. I know its been dry today but with the last week of constant rain I imagine everything is going to take a while to dry out. If anybody has ventured out today would be grateful of a conditions report.
Cheers

I was at Gardoms this afternoon and about half the stuff was in good nick, and that's a fairly dank venue.

Yeah, Gardoms North was one of the places I had in mind. Was hoping stuff like Marks Roof might have escaped the worst of the weather!

Most of the probs at Robin Hood's stride and  the top part of Cratcliffe were dry this afternoon. I'd imagine Clifftop boulders were dry too, but didn't go to have a look.

Should imagine ilkley would be a bit damp still. If so, see you at the cliff.

Forecast for tomorrow looks like small amounts of rain plus a fair bit of wind. I imagine Gardom's North would be one of the worst affected places. For quick drying try Curbar, Cratcliffe, Burbage N, Burb S boulders, bits of Froggat, Mothers cap/Pet, Bamford, Apparent North. If it's more rainy you could try Churnet, eatswood, Pleasley Vale, Shining Cliff, Minus Ten.

Rivelin is often a good bet when it's like this. particularly in january for some reason. it's been dry there when pissing it down at stanburbage etc.

 That's true Mr Cofe.
Wharncliffe is a funny one in that the bouldering gets green and some probs dry slow, but it gets much less rain that the Peak proper so can often be surprisingly good nick.

i think just soloing/routes at wharncliffe popular end is a much better bet in dodgy weather than the dragons den bouldering. the rock is 100% cleaner and faster to dry. the tensile test wall is a good bet for some more bouldery stuff.

 :agree:
There are also various isolated dry probs at what might otherwise be wet venues, such as West Side Story, My Buddy The Apple, Hueco Wall, The Gritsone Treaty, Solomon's Seal etc

Well Westside was soaked today. As was Conan the Librarian. All this despite wind that made it hard to walk in a straight line. Gach. Damn you all and your contagious optimism!  ;D

Almscliff dried out this afternoon, and by late afternoon friction was amazing! Wind was horrendous though. Peak tomorrow!

9.29am - Hathersage. It's been pissing down here for the last 5 minutes and shows no signs of stopping.

It's only ten o'clock! Don't write anything off yet. Good drying breeze, have a look here which shows the rain as fairly localised, then see what develops.
