I doubt it. Metoffice have been predicting a ridge tommorrow morning with rain returning by lunchtime. I'll be out in the morning but I'm not holding my breath for dry rock - its been raining solidly for a few days now.

And yes, its 'the peak'.

it's been raining far too much, the Don is worryingly high once more!

Shit paul, i'm sure you could do without that! park car above HWM this time.

I'm sure this is the only time you encourage sandbagging! Good luck.

I didn't get round to replacing it thankfully and the other car commutes to Wakefield daily so is currently safe. The problem we have in our building is that we have another little river (Kelham goit) running underneath which has a culvert draining into the Don, when the river gets up to above the top of the culvert (which it isn't far off) the goit starts backfilling and floods us from the centre. Whoever designed it needs a massive kick up the arse because its all wrong.

I work in this area, and heard a good story the other day about the last great flood back in victorian? times. Apparently all the bodies washed down and collected in an eddy in the brewery yard, where they remained for some time until they could be shovelled underground. Folk still report cold shivers as they cross the yard....

Its funny I'd never even heard about this flood until searching for news articles on the more recent flood and finding loads of information. There is a historical information board down by the river right outside our flats which i'd never stopped to read, a few weeks ago I did, it's about the flood you mention, however it doesn't mention floating bodies strangely enough!

It was pissing down in Matlock Bath until lunchtime and as of about 10 minutes ago was drizzling.

I doubt anywhere will be dry aound the south peak tomorrow.

Not the south Peak, but I went for a ride this afternoon past Stanage, Curbar and Froggatt and everything looked absolutely soaked and it was still raining on the way back. So unless something drastic happens over night, as others have said, it's probably not worth a trip.

Not really Grammar, is it Houd?

Besides, it's The Peak District, ergo The Peak.
The Yorkshire Dales= The Dales
But, it's The Lake District (because there's only one lake), so it should be The Lake, not The Lakes.

C'mon Grammra, what to do?

That's a good point. I bet all those 'Peak not Peaks' professors are guilty of said crime. ;)

Guilty because of the quantity greater than 1 of lakes?

Not sure what he means by that, but the principle that if you call the Peak District the Peak, then one should refer to the Lake District as The Lake. I cannot believe the boring wank coming out of my mouth...

I think Jim is saying ther's more than one Lake.  If I'm right, you are incorrect Jim.  Sorry.

Spelling-ra doesn't have the same ring now does it?

Gramm-ra would almost certainly feast on wintermute's corpse.

By that reconing the peak shouldn't be called the peak at all, since theres (probably) no hill in the peak called so-and-so peak. luckily the lakes argument is bollocks anyway - you can call it a tarn or a mere or water or whatever but it is still a lake by definition;

Quote from: dictionary
A large inland body of fresh water or salt water

Its known as "The Lakes" because the district came to be known as the Lake District because there is a large number of bodies of water there, and also because the locals say "Lakes".

As far as I'm aware the peak district is known as "The Peak" because the name came from the anglosaxon occupants of said area in days gone by who had names which sound like "peak" (Pecsaetans), etymologically having the same root as the modern day word peak but refering to high or hilly ground, rather than todays usage of "peak" refering specifically to a pointed summit. Since the peak is predominantly rolling dales and high moorland the peak name if using just todays meaning would make no sense because the area is notable for its almost complete lack of conventional peaks (with the odd exception like win hill etc) compared to other mountainous areas in the UK.

So as they say, when in the Peak, do as the Pecsaetans do.

Cheers Fiend, I was expecting that  :)
You are right with that Dave.  The Lake District comes from the National Park, as opposed to the old names of the Shires.  So really it's not traditionsal, but based on the name of a body of water.  So I'm told.

Does it really matter?  Probably not.

It's The Peak.
It'll be wet.
