Netgear D834G wireless trouble
January 15, 2008, 08:41:34 pm
The homehub just worked- devices found it, they asked me for the WEP key, I enetered it and that was that, painless.

Now I switched to the netgear, no matter what security settings I choose in it, whilst devices seem to 'see it' i.e. Soundbridge offers it as an option in wirelss setup, nothing can connect to it. My phone doesn't even ask me for a key it just says WLAN not found...
Is there something i need to do to make the wireless part of this router workable?

Have you filled in the SSID field and checked "Enable Wireless Access Point" and
"Allow Broadcast of Name (SSID)"?

Plus an update - the phone can connect fine with security disabled.

And the soundbridge can play it's default internet radio channels, but not the presets...

I too have just had problems with a Netgear Router (NG834GT) following an upgrade to the dreaded Vista.

First I couldn't see the router from my laptop using wireless, though I could see the various BT Voyager routers of my neighbours. After installing the latest firmware upgrade from Netgear I could then see the router but not gain access with WEP enabled. From what you describe, this sounds like the problem you are having. Have you tried gaining access without any encryption enabled just to check that it is possible to access the router this way? Assuming that it is, but that you want to use WEP encryption, try changing the "Authentication Type" on the encryption page of the router interface from "Automatic" to "Open System". This worked for me.

If you can't see your own AP but you can see others your wireless card must be ok, so it cant be that. Is your aerial on the Netgear seated properly? try turning the AP off and back on again in netgear world?

Next step is definitely to return netgear to no encryption, no nothing, SSID broadcast on etc. Try to connect and then turn on the security in stages. Good luck!

ooh, Vista drivers - that's probably a fairly fundamental thing I have as yet failed to resolve. I'm on Vista, I had forgotten the drivers  Will try this tonight- thanks for the reminder...

Vista hasn't been the bane of my life to be honest, most issues were easily resolved and it saved the bother of reinstalling etc. on a factory machine.

Mind, I've canned the Netgear for now, and I reckon I'll just stick with the homehub and manage any extra ethernet devices off an additional switch instead. Please feel free to poo poo this idea if it's bollocks
