Rich Simpson - Zone and knockin'
January 14, 2008, 09:22:28 pm
Does anybody know if Rich did indeed flash / onsight these two routes, or did the UKB rumour vortex have some sort of 'spark that set the flame' moment and generate the thought itself? Does anyone have an email address for Rich? He supposedly lives 4 doors down, he called at my door one day, but I haven't seen him since.

And please, much as I enjoy the farther-flung opinions on here, this is a search for fact.

Far-flung fact?

..Go knocking on people's doors for Jehova's duties  - you may just get the scoop needed for the Curbar Script!

If you can't get in touch with Rich directly, I'd try Doylo. He might even give you the real info on the rumours...

Ta. Just doing the Curbar stuff for the guide, and wanted to clear this up. I suppose like everyone else I heard the rumours but should just check with Rich.

Have a full page in the guide devoted to rumours and mystery ascents, and just put that picture and quote in, sorted

Surely you'll need more than a page just for the Ben Heason stuff.

Seriously. The last time this issue was discussed was in the context of the importance accurate information in guidebooks. I'd be interested to know what approach you are taking to it grimer as you're obviously trying to get contentious issues cleared up. And rightly so.

hell... I'm a dyslexic chemistry teacher what more do you expect...   ::)
I had to take out over a thousand comma's from my dPhil thesis, and the only reason there weren't that many spelling/grammar errors was due to the squiggly red and green lines that windows throws around like sweets in a candy store  ;D

tell the real truth I was told to take out the commas (see what I did there...) but got bored so the comma count starts rising exponentially towards the end of the final submission...

but fair play if one of my kids had typed that I'd have probably written something scathing on their work....

One totally respects grimer's efforts to clear the rumours up. And one strongly suspects that the truth will definitely not out.

I'll put a pint on it (lack of absolute confirmation / denial to any Froggatt / Curbar rumours)

shit Norton, i should give you negative karma for using a catherine tate-ism! she's another one for room 101.

I'd also be psyched to know if the simpson rumours were true for other crags, like the harder faster thing etc. jasper has a relevant point about the heason stuff too - especially since he was writing the froggatt script at one time.

Are these rumours still circulating?  That E3 in Greenland with the aid traverse in he soloed was later freed at the same grade by a different team.  I can't believe any serious doubts over anything that needed a belayer, so you're left with the solos, but I think we've passed the point now where it's a struggle to make shit stick anymore.
Like Rocky said to the Ruskies after avenging Apollo Creed's death: If I can change, we can all change.

And don't ask me about the rumours about Rich.  You could also find him through facebook.  Grimer my suggested solution was to just downgrade everything he's rumoured to have done, rather than tolerating accusations of the guidebook being inaccurate for the next twenty years.  He don't want to make a big deal out of it, then fine, we'll not make a big deal out of it:

Gaia - super classic *** E8 that is fashionable to fall off of.
inferior variation finish possible on the left.

Eliminates have been climbed up the walls left of Peapod and right of Elder crack which clearly suffer from a lack of line compared to other routes on the crag...

Yeah, sorry about that Simon. I've obviously missed the fact that this issue has been dealt with, put to bed, sorted as it were. I was unaware that all doubts had been erased, facts proved, etc and that everyone was content that it had been satisfactorily resolved.

Of course as this is obviously the case there can be no problem with Ben's script being taken as gospel and used as the factual basis for the new guide. Apologies, I've been out of the loop for a while so you can understand why I might be slightly confused by this whole situation.

Struggling to find the correct smiley for this post. Oh yeah, there it is.

...hmmm ok...undertones noted - however...

...all I can say to that is that a team has worked on the script, and its not just Ben - hope that the right stuff is reported - its been a labour of love for many a year for the team - hope we get it right...

Cheers

Is that going to help?? (If you're referring to the accuracy of claimed ascents and stuff, rather than checking for typos and all). If it would help by some informed people reading it and tutting and saying "Hmmm no that ain't right, they should put the truth in instead", why don't those informed people go to grimer first?? One could PM him cold hard facts right now.
