bittorrent is a protocol, a bit like http or ftp. It provides a way of sharing large files at high speed.

yes, it will work on a mac, but not sure what client you would use.

with all of these .torrent sites you need to share big style or you get banned. I leave my sharing pc on 24/7 to keep good ratios. If you're not happy about leaving a computer online then you might have problems....

hmmmmm.......

you cant just leave it on until peeps have uploaded off you for the same size that you've just downloaded??? or are you dealing with such large files ( movies / games) that it takes 24/7 to keep yourself on  1.0 ratio??

yeah, if you share until 1:1 then you're fine. problem is that (as you've sussed) you can download much faster than you can upload, so even maintaining a 1:1 ratio takes a lot of share time with big files.
