road bike people your help is needed!
November 12, 2007, 06:18:00 pm
i know that this may sound stupid.....
im trying to get an old bike up and running for the winter and i have just encountered my first hitch.
the stem is old school and i am trying to fit some bars to it, but they wont go on due to their shape (kink). what do it do? has anyone fitted bars on a stem like this? (i got these bars due to their low price on the interweb)

i dont really want to spend anymore money on this project if at all possible.
thanks in advance, chris

Can't see what you could do there really short of trying to prize the stem clamp open a bit with a lever.

Aye - big fuckin screw driver and open the clamp up a bit at a time and hope you don't snap it until the hole is big enough to stuff the bars through (or send those nasty anatomical things back and get some cheap old school ones - much nicer than bars with weird bumps and stuff on!)
Good luck!

Can I ask if any roadies on here have any down tube shifters they want to get rid of cheap.  I've got some 105 ones at the moment but something in the left one (front derailleur) shattered recently and it keeps working loose.

I could probably get one cheap off ebay or something, but I thought I'd try here as there seems to be an abundance of helpful roadies knocking about.

Late as usual to the roadie chat, but a handy way of fitting bars is to stick a 1p in the gap in the clamp, then put the bolt back in and screw in until the stem is open. If only one side of the stem is threaded then need to use a 1p plus a nut. Saves levering on alloy bits with screw drivers and scratching up bars etc.
