Nice find jfw, am listening to Carola's fabric mix as we speak. That'll round off a sumptuous afternoon of techno thanks.

i like techno, but not sloppy journalism:

Quote
Toby Amies explores the history of Techno. Created in Detroit in 1988, the originators of the genre were strongly influenced by the aesthetics of Arthur C Clarke and Fritz Lang

On a similar note, Kodwo Eshun wrote a fantastic book called 'More Brilliant Than The Sun: Adventures in Sonic Fiction' - it's probably one of the best books on music I've ever read and takes a very literary journey the history of afro-black futurist music (essentially Sun Ra through Parliament into techno (Tresor, Underground Resistance) and jungle).  It's a rip-roaring read, slaughters countless sacred cows along the way and will open your mind and ears to many things.

I've long been a fan of Ishkur's guide and this latest incarnation is the best. Far more genres than its possible to distinguish between and the most complicated 3D map of electronic music types imaginable. Great for tracing techno from its 1970s roots to the mass of sub-types around today.

One recent addition and probably the daftest genre on there has to be "Casiocore", an offshoot of 8-bit VGM techno, which defines music made solely using cheap Casio synths from the 1980s made specifically for and by "cheesy lo-fi electronic twerps".

Cheers! That was good for passing the time on a boring rest day. Interesting stuff and from the genres I know, a pretty well done guide.

A couple of things missing are the Breakcore genre between gabber and techstep, and the obvious link between techstep and neurofunk.

I do like his "genuine" US Hard House genre, pretty cool stuff.

I hate it more than people top roping Stanage VDiffs.

Now where's my Space Rock and a good 15 minute drum solo

Look, I got this sort of problem with technology...

If I get all the plug-ins and shiz, can I listen to this programme?  These are archived, yes?

I'm not a fan at all.  It ignores Spanish techno for a start, OK OK, Mulero makes an apperance...  And sod all mention of the movers and shakers in Eastern Europe.

I think if you click on it, and you haven't got Real Player, it will send you to a link to get you Real Player. Just keep clicking on the button of least resistance.

The programmes are archived for one week.
