The missus recently purchased The Girl Next Door on DVD.  We wanted to see it before gifting it away.

The DVD won't play in the player (a new-ish machine) and nor will it play in any of the video functions on our lapdog.

Keeps saying shite like:  The DVD is not suitable for Zone 1 etc..  which is pissing me off as it came from the US @ €18.  Somethings tells me that's why . . .

Anyone know what the p-tooey is going on and whether it's possible to crack it open w/ a little work?  Thanks in advance.

One way is to rip it on your computer with DVD Region and CSS Free and DVDShrink, then burn it again as a region free disc.  You can get DVD Resgion and CSS Free for nothing if you look
But you wouldn't do that cos it's a breach of copyright, would you now?

Teach you to get crap films.

Depending on the DVD player you may be able to find a hack code to make it region free. Some require just the standard remote, others require a special remote or a special disk. Google the players make and model and 'region free code/hack' etc. Lots of sites out there eg.http://www.videohelp.com/dvdhacks

Alternatively take it down to your friendly local independent specialist and pay them to unlock it. £10-20 in the UK.

I think most players you can get codes for , Toshiba seem to be a bit trickier though.

as an aside: we've got a multi-region Sony player that we no longer need if anyone (houdini?) would like it, its black and sheffield based. Works perfectly etc. I'd ebay it but seeing as though you can buy them from you local Tesco's its probably going to be more faff than its worth.

Thanks for the kind offer Paul_ but as you say, it's a faff, and would probably cost just as much in P & P to the Reich as it would to buy a new one ourselves.

Alas this Pig Mawr of a laptop has no DVD burner so we've got a techy friend doing-the-do.  Cheers fellas.  (Why they bother w/ regional coding is beond me.)

Purely so the DVD producers can rip off us Euros compared to what the those in the US pay for them same films.
