If you want to use an overwrite tool, you could always use Eraser instead? That is Vista compatible, but it's not free.

Or for a different approach, use Secure Erase which doesn't overrrite data but uses the secure erase function build into the ATA specification. This is free and is considered more secure (NSA say so apparantly) but is more complicated to use.

A good article gives an overview here: http://blogs.zdnet.com/storage/?p=129

If the following horrifies you:
Quote
Instructions for using HDDerase.exe
—————————————-
Copy the downloaded file, HDDerase.exe onto the created floppy/CD-ROM bootable DOS disk. Boot the computer in DOS using the bootable disk. Make sure to set the correct boot priority setting in the system BIOS. Type “hdderase” at system/DOS prompt to run HDDerase.exe. All ATA hard disk drives connected to the main system board will be identified and their information displayed. Make sure that the jumpers on the hard disk drives are correctly configured. Avoid setting the jumpers to CS (cable select) on the hard disk drives. Master or slave jumper setting is preferred.

...then you're probably better off using an overwrite tool.

All those credit card details.

I got an email the other day from a Prince Mbezei in Nigeria who could probably put them to good use.

you should really check this shit out,

Bzorgi invented a tray that can withstand a 2,300-degree furnace and make efficient use of that heat to melt disks quickly.

maybe a bit extreme     :o
