Any ideas on this one:
My internet works for UKB but not for anything else. It seems to drop the broadband quite often right now (I think my modem is on the way out) but right now it will only go to UKB. Can't get any other sites up at all.
Not that bothered, other than checking my email it would seem I'm paying for broadband purely to read the informed gossip I find here . However I am just curious as to why I can only get this site. Over to the UKB intellectuals....

Sounds very weird but I would check yer firewall first. Is it blocking everything by default but allowing ukb coz you've specifically allowed the site?

Hmmm, possibly firewall. But I have never specified that UKB is fine (or that everything else isn't). Wierd as images on linked on this site but form other sites don't display, i.e. I can't see embedded images. So it is just this site that it's letting through, nothing else at all. Oh well maybe I just have a mental modem.

Firewalls usually work on port and protocol so I'd be surprised if it was a firewall issue

Could be a DNS issue... if you cant see the DNS server then site names wont get resolved into addresses. UKB might be cached locally if you visit here alot. try pinging www.microsoft.com to see if the address is correctly resolved

Start-> run -> "cmd"

then type "ping www.google.com"

if this doesnt work type (if it does work then you havent got an internet issue)

"ping 74.125.19.99"

if this does work then you have a dns issue, if it doesnt work then there is an internet / routing issue

I had a similar problem at my old flat, broadband worked for about five sites perfectly, anything else never responded. After it foxed even CF I fucked it off and went back to dial-up...
Which I'm still on. It doesn't bother me really except for uploading, I think it winds the lodger up though
