Any bouldering in South Wales?
May 25, 2007, 09:22:54 am
Hi guys,
got a question for you: I'm an italian climber, got the opportunity to move up to UK, at the university of Glamorgan, but before I decide I need to know what's the climbing scene around there...I know about north wales, llanberies pass, Parisella cave and all the rest, but is there any good bouldering area also in south wales?

cheers

Covers about all there is. Some of it is OK, but wouldn't say any venues of national importance. If i was you I would either get a trad rack and spend weekends in Pembrokeshire, or take up surfing.

There are other bits and bobs, but that covers the best of it. There is some sport climbing too, if you like quarries. Otherwise might be time to broaden your horizons. Peak, N Wales and Dartmoor will be feasible for weekends though.

I tried to broaden my horizons..I did sport, trad, alpine....but there's nothing like a good, old grit B-something problem to trash your fingers on...

thanks

Don't come to south Wales for the climbing!  Saying that, there's plenty of climbing and training venues in South Wales to keep you strong.

Dinas Rock is the best boudering venue in the area (and is surprisingly very good if you climb V5/6 and above).

There is some very good sports climbing in South Wales too.

But I reiterate, don't come to South Wales for the climbing!!

Its not that bad! maybe my memory is at fault, but I remember bouldering at the Trench nr Ogmore, with great fondness, some very good problems on wave smoothed fluted limestone. There was an article in OTE many years ago, by Chris Hamper.

Pembs is usually regarded as West Wales, although it is technically South West.

Have a read of this. I'm sure Dave F will be along at some point to tell you more. Although a seperate post might be a good idea.
