The Shucks Lair
May 14, 2007, 01:45:00 pm
Thanks to Moo getting lost the other week, while trying to find Aeons, we've found and developed a new buttress in the vicinity of Fairy Steps. Sorry JB I just can't get enough of "prancing round these wanky limestone 'bouldering' venues"  :P .

Likewise, nice one Greg and thanks for the rapid topo creation.  Funnily enough I was looking around that side of the hill the other week wondering about the possibilities of further discoveries.  Obviously I didn't get so far as actually looking very hard.

Myself and MB added another three fine problems here last night. This truly is a superb addition to the Fairy Steps circuit as unlike all the other sectors it has a high concentration of hard problems in one area - 1/6c 1/7a 2/7a+'s 2/7b's 2/7b+'s.   :read:

Speaking of new developments, I notice you missed out on this World Class Venue, Greg.  You must be slipping mate!!!  These look like some of the best lines on northern Lime.  Or were you classing it as "Lancashire" and waiting for R-Man to develop it?

A 22 page epic no less. I thought the days of the bourgeoisie developing crags were long gone? Shame the Reverend's writing skills had been modernised. Should have read something like:

"The Reverend stood atop the sweeping gully, donning his breaches and nail boots. 'O.K!' cried Hitherington-Parker Jessop, and at once the Reverend continued to move with great courage and élan up the damp chasm."

I think perhaps the images above don't do the crag justice, but even so this comment seems a slightly offhand? The crag is as good as most limestone bouldering in the UK... of course if you don't like limestone then perhaps it is shit  :-\ .

greg, i think that they are talking about the sit crag that they have linked to rather than the crag that tom and your goodself has found (wich does indeed look good).
the shit crag does indeed look amazingly bad.

Just noticed this on UKC News:
Quote
So writes Greg Chapman, Lakes bouldering guru, describing how he came to name a new limestone buttress on the northern flanks of Longtail Wood in a close proximity to the well documented tiers of Fairy Steps.

Now I'm not allowed to big up Chapman too much as he will lose street cred at his hang at UKBouldering.com (as most of them read UKClimbing.com...and word travels fast), but here's another of his little bouldering video guides to this recently virgin buttress

I can testify as to the quality of this new crag, I visited today. Its fucking well good. Lovely rock and lovely moves. I don't think I pulled a static move all day - very slappy on smashing slopers. Get yourselves down.  :great:

P.S. Adam, went to see the orchid. Rarest flowering plant in Britain anyone? Get in...  :dance1:

Yes. I'd have to say the flower itself was really cool and the mystery around its age and origins is really interesting, and all on my doorstep! :great: Thanks JB a good tick to get.

Just been for a run up Fairy Steps and happened to swing by the Shuck's Lair. To my annoyance some bozo had left two heaped piles of chalk and a whopping great sock under the buttress, HOW DO YOU FORGET YOUR SOCK AT A VENUE THATS 30ft WIDE! As pointed out in the topo...

As with all the crags at Fairy Steps the Shuck’s Lair is on SSSI (Site of Special Scientific
Interest) land, so please make sure you stick to the tracks, respect your surroundings and
keep the noise to a minimum.

... this crag is on a Site of Special Scientific Interest thus we should, regardless of the access implications, want to keep the place as near to its natural state as possible. So please:

* Don't fill your chalk bag/bucket to the point where its overflowing every time you put your hand in it (that includes you Moo!)
* Take all bits of tape litter etc. home
* Brush off any tick-marks before you leave the crag
* Keep the noise down - the place is teeming with wildlife
* Stick to tracks on the approach
* Don't damage any living planet life or pick flowers etc. (You can be fined up to £10,000 for doing this on SSSI land)
* Before you leave do a quick optical sweep of the area to check you haven't left anything

Sheesh, I can't believe you have to remind people about these simple rules.

PS: This applies to most other venues in the south Lakes, as most are on SSSI/National Trust land.

Quite right Greg, I thought it was common habit to have a quick lookover to see if you've left anything precious (car keys, wallet, you know the sketch), and in so doing spot any litter/socks you've left. Fair play if you're doing a Font circuit you might forget putting a brush down halfway through, but this crag is tiny - you could check it over and have a staring contest facing away from the crag at the same time.
